Mark is a pure genius, altough this video is not of very high quality, i am nevertheless thankful. So amazing this song so overwhelming to enjoy this merely beautiful guitar sounds! Omg i can never get rid of it,as if the gods had learned to play guitar from heaven down to us :-)))
This song is always haunting me most from that album (Sailing to Philadelphia), the whole build-up, and half of it the solo in pretty much Telegraph Road way. Not sure if it's my favourite from Sailing... but it definitelly is very, very special. This is nice rendition, though sound at the end is just bad - quite expected thouhg. Still thanks, I like it.
A far cry from Money for Nothing - which I still love. I did not know they had partnered for a tour. I do remember the name of the song I Found a Diamond" saw it in a rag mag, talking about his going back to his roots. I love Emmylou I could listen to her voice all day.
this song sound 10 times better when your actually there. when you can feel the gitaur solos through your body and the drums are making your ears ring. good recording though
If only men knew what effect this final crescendo has on women... It's an orgasm !! I held my breath during the finale when I saw it live and so did the whole audience, MORE MORE!! it's an addiction !!
This is a wonderful song... we Canadians enjoy his reference to Toronto and Ontario.
Emmylou is a wonderful complement... she and Mark are a somewhat unlikely pairing but they work wonderfully... both have long histories of linking up with other musicians and it always works, this time included.
I was born in Berkeley. The Greek Theater is a place where I use to play when I was a kid many years ago. I heard this song for the first time yesterday. Incredible! The best song I have ever heard about American racing. Thank you Mark. The Real Live Road Running CD/DVD is a work of art.
@boogpatton yeah, during the USA/ Canada part of MK's 2010 tour, he had Tim O'Brien playing with him, and Tim played a banjo during this song... I thought it went perfect with the song, you should check out some of those performances
In all shows he says how much he hates the idiots that make low quality videos of his shows distracting the musicians and the public that pay more than 100 bucks to see the show
He reminds me of myself, only he can actually play the guitar. By the way, during this concert, their guitars were not plugged into the electricity, the electricity was plugged into their guitars.
I saw him in Boston July 19, 08. The BEST concert, ever! I could hear Speedway @ Nazareth every day and not get tired of it. Danny Cummings on drums is a genius. They played all my favorites, Local Hero, So Far Away, Why Worry, ... so many great songs. Mark is a(The) Master guitarist, making it look SO easy. Everyone I talked to on the way out was so impressed!! Six stars!! Makes me proud to be a Scot.
Yep, I was there too. MK looks SO good. I love his outfit. This song is so hard, but they nail it like it's easy as pie. This is probably the greatest band I will ever see live.
WOW!! I hope Mark plays this one, and gives us lots of his guitar playing on this tour. I love his songs and lyrics, but his guitar artistry is what I can never get enough of.
THIS, IN PARIS WAS POWERFULL AS WE CAN'T IMAGINE !!!
...it's really too bad we don't see enough EMMY, i can tell you... she do the rythm guitar here, and, she's not here to pretend,...WHEN SHE PLAYS, SHE PLAYS, OOOOOH YES ! with also Richard Bennett beside, i got a FLASH that i'm not ready to forget... and i did'nt know that song... first time was the good time : D
I like it a lot better with the violin player there. I saw him play it on the Shangri-La tour without the violin player, and it was different. But hey, he is never bad.
took me right back to radio city music hall...did the same great job there. he's still got it! could have spent the whole 6 minutes on his guitarwork...i can see those other guys elsewhere

This is like being run-over by the Gibson guitar truck - and then it stops and backs-up over you again!
;-)
Ominous build-up to an awesome solo. Look at the shut-eyes concentration as Mark gets into the zone at 4:20
Love this guys music.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This is one of the songs that sadly works only on the album, not live.

I disagree. I think the live versions of this song are more powerful than the original. In fact, this is always a highlight of the show...

Well the early version that i heard live from the Sailing to Philadelphia tour was bad. I guess it was 2001 or 2002. This one is better.

The song is referring to "Ontario Motor Speedway", in California...
Panzon300 2 years ago
Hi, Panzon
Thanks for that... I did not know about Ontario, CA.
The version of the song that I ususally listen to is a live version that Knopfler did in Toronto several years ago.
He sings "Toronto, Ontario" and the crowd responds.
I believe that Toronto has a raceway (I know Montreal has hosted the Formula One for many years), so I figured that he was referring to our Toronto.
(I live near Kingston, about 3 hours away from Toronto. My son & I saw MK on the same tour, but in Ottawa... superb)

I'd love to see him LA in 2010...It would be a first for me.. :) Cheers!

no, its about the speedway in Nazareth PA. I've been there

I agree with Boogpatton... this song is perfect for banjo.
Interesting observation

very nice camera shots...
the music and the voice are little noisy(well, its only a camera in live show, isnt it :) )
in my humble opinion, with regard to this song,no doubt: this is the best live show performance and music presence from MK in youube

The words to this song capture the essence of open cockpit racing in America. There is nothing so sublime as a master guitarist with a story to tell.
