most of them are proberly not even from Dunedin ( and just come for the uni), the out of control need to be sent back to their home town Dunedin does not want out of control people
This is why you let them pay FULLY for their own education.
Then they can choose how to gain from it, or waste it.
Having fun, who could complain about that, provided YOUR fun dose not negatively effect the rights (yes, I am sure they know ALL about rights) of OTHERS
atleast the cops in this seemed more responsible than the castle street riots
Im sick of the bad students who incite riots and then because of this every other student is blaimed this gets poor polytech shutdown by these selfish students.
most students are good
ild also like to know if there where any police dressed up as students or something
this happens overseas where cops dress up in black go to protest and incite riots they where found out because they where wearing police issued boots
OUSA, bad idea organizing it for the evening that all the George St shops put their rubbish out. That's half the reason it descended into chaos.
In previous years, the first years had nothing to throw back at the people lining the streets who were tossing eggs, flour (and an isolated case of a bucket of vomit and faeces)
Having rubbish at hand on all areas along the journey provided ample medium for toga-donners to retaliate with.
Where do u think we learnt these drinking habits? FROM THE OLDER GENERATIONS, the ones that are complaining. I bet they drank lots back when they were in their prime. We just took drinking one step further.
Big deal, there was a mess. Clean it up, theres far worse things happening in the world.
No country can control their youths. We like to get on the piss, theres no other way to put it. The world is on recession what is there for young people to look forward to? We try to escape reality by getting on the piss, smoking buds. At least they arn't shooting each other, just a bit of drunken fun
@hampam00jade : clean it up? who clean it up? im a student myself and am disappointed when older folk seemingly joke about me taking part in things like this. i dont want to sound like a 'sad guy' but its just unfortunate that our 'fun' has to be played out through the developed drinking culture.
What would you do if u were drunk & someone was throwing eggs at u? Fuck them up......that car deserved to get its windows smashed.
The students were provoked by stupid people from the otago community, they were the ones throwing the eggs. The students retaliated by biffing rubbish back at them.
Only the organizers can be blamed for what happened, no one told us or any of the halls where we were going or what time we were meeting. There must of been maybe 3 seperate halls that stormed George street having no clue what was going on. If youre going to have hundreds of drunk uni students in an unorganized mob what do you expect to happen? The guy who jumped was from my hall (Hayward) he did hit the concrete but he's fine. Hence the awkward pause once he's landed when everyones like "fuck"
People need some fun. Its part of growing up and i wouldn't deny it from anyone. Think of the tomato throwing thing in EU. NZ needs its partys, street fairs, guyfox. Its good social madness + looks like they are really having fun. Aint that whats life about? Unfortunately some peeps didn't dig this + hence the scene with the eggs. I dont agree with trashing cars, violence and the vandalism, thats crazy. if you organize stuff like the tomato thing then its "ok for people to vent out with no probs
The Tomato Throwing in Brunol(sp), In Spain is extremely organised and managed well, Shop Keepers within the area are given mass compensation for their tolerance. This was not successful in it's organisation process, and many shops have had to foot the bill for the mess and vandalism that ensued. Otago University and The Council should really foot the bill in the cleaning up that shopkeepers and services had to complete, I spent until midnight cleaning blue paint our motel.
It was so funny to watch, i was right beside the pole, he got up straight away, thats why everyone cheered... and by the way the car got what it deserved, pricks were throwing eggs out of it.
when will we find some thing else to do in this town than drink piss...and destroy the place. The uni really needs to provide an alternative for us. What do you rekon?
