ANYONE!!! I just got my first batch of convict cichlids and i kept 1 male and 1 female to breed to my 20 gallon so i can count them. Will one male be enought for the famle to chooose from?
Hi! i wanna ask u a question i bought a breeding pair of convict cichlids and then when i put them in the tank my cobalt blue zebra attack them and bit their tails, should i seperate my cobalt blue zebra from my convict or should i let my convict live with my cobalt?
omg wow!!! that has to be the best female convict i've ever seen!! you did a great job raising her ! =) but i have a question if ur willing to reply back. I want 1 or 2 convicts but i dont really have any room if they have any babies...(i've heard they can have lots of babies)...so i wanted maybe 1 or 2 females...but would they go good with other fish rather then another kind of cichlid? maybe like a cory catfish?
@twe93 you might get away with having a bottom feeder in the tank, but convicts are very territorial when spawning and very unpredictable. I have put them in with much larger fish before as food. If they are not eaten and have a chance to breed then they will go for the eyes of the larger, more aggressive fish. they really should be in a tank of their own if they are breeding and once they fry hatch, then the male needs to be removed from the tank.
Oh she's so pretty! Can you tell me when they start getting their colors? I have a baby (about 2 months old) and he/she has no special color yet. When can you start breeding them, such as how old do they have to be?
Wow! I have never seen females that huge. All I ever have is huge bull males. I have cross breeded some cichlids and I even have a solid blue convict. I have tons of convicts even in my bathtub which I use to clean them of parasites like argulus/ a transparent water flea. All of my convicts are raised wild and are very aggressive.I can stick my hand in one of the tanks and they peck me like crazy. It is also very easy to breed crime.
@Michael7klufas6 Make sure the fish are juveniles when you introduce them to each other as an RTS gets more and more aggressive as they mature, same with convicts. So if one is fully matured and the other is a juvenile, there could be death in the tank. Get all your fish at a juvenile stage and make sure there are plenty of hiding spots for them, and they should be fine. A 30G is way too small for what u have in there buddy, get rid of some or they will start dieing. Also, angel fish require....
@Michael7klufas6 a 30 gallon tank for all that is TOO SMALL. You're WAAAYYY over-stocked man. Remove those angels! They will suffer in this tank. I can say cuz my first tank was a 30G. I kept a RTS with a Convict and they make good tank mates since both are aggressive fish and do not get bullied much. However, if you're going to mix other fish in there, larger Gouramis are good options, as well as barbs (in a school of 7-10). Make sure fish are all juveniles when introduced to each *continued*
@ilistenttohippohop ims looks like that to i have a castle in my fish tank and it hide in there all day with a another fish and if any other fish swims by it attacks it what does that mean?
nice fish.but if i go in a pet store and i buy just 2 convict small will they pare or i must get more of them sow for sure i get a pair from them.. can u tell a part when they are very young like 2 cm ..? this is how big they sell em here pls help me out as well:)
@Michael7klufas6 In that case... the only thing I would be concerned about are the fins of the Angels. If you do get a Convict, make sure that you get a FEMALE. They have orange bellies. Males get much bigger than females and the Males are much more territorial.
@Michael7klufas6 Angels are Cichlids and if RTS stands for Red Terror's, then they are Cichlids too. There are a lot of things to consider... the size of the tank and the size of the other fish are important and also the sex of the fish... however, Convicts are NASTY !! A spawning pair of Convicts won't nip the fins of a much larger fish... they will remove it's eyes first...
female convicts get that color usually when there ready to breed but you can get lucky and get one with natural colors like that depends on how stressed the fish is
wow! I got a female the other day who has quite a bit of orange on her flanks and fins, but she is still not even two inches. I really hope she grows to look like yours. Gorgeous.
when did she start getting all the colours. i have 2 female convicts and there orange is getting more bright and i can see bits of blue and green on their pelvic and dorsal fins
i had two convicts the pet shop said one was male one was female does not have a red bellie like yours though. they lived together great for about 6months then i noticed the one i believe is the female looking a bit battered then reliesed my bigger male( i believe) had started doing a bit of wife beatting any ideas why this would start i have a 200l tank 60 US gal i believe with two blood parrotts which are fine

i has a question. i have a single convict female and wat is the lowest amout of gallons does it need? can it be in a 5 gallon fishtank at the least? since it is only one fish i have no idea how many gallons it needs =(
@rainbowpixx Hi there, I have a male and feamale in a tiny acrylic tank that is only 7.1 Gallons, they have a cave, a piece of driftwood and lots of feathery (live) plants. These fish are so happy and like all Connies breed like mad. This situation was supposed to be temporary but they were just so contented that I've let them stay in there.
what a beautiful fish hey can some one help me i have a pink convict and one like this one and they act like they r spawning but both of the fish have orange bellies and my question is do males have orange bellies too?
my dad has a male withs orange and blue on his fins and a little bit around his gills. He also has the males sister who looks just like yours awsome fish
wow very beautiful female i just got one a couple days ago along with a firemouth. what kind of food do you feed yours? i feed mine Aqueon color enhancing slow sinking pellets and they wont eat them, any tips please write me someone.
how to make my convict breed becouse i see the male chase sometimes when see the female and they don't stay togethere ANCWER MY PLEASE. nice vid man !

and my female has got rather long top fin that normal for a female convict but she has awsome color and she is stumpy with orange belly and orange top and dorsol fin??
Sounds like typical breeding behavior... just keep an eye on them to make sure the male doesn't kill her... and yep, long dorsal fins on the female are normal... very pretty =)
well, at the time of the vid she was probably about 1.75 inches, but there was a Piranha in the tank also, so not long after the vid she became dinner.
@eatdrywall i think my convicts have laid eggs under a shell and i moved the shell but relised so i put the shell back but my convicts diddnt even protect them ?? dose that matter??
female convicts, just like this one, have orange coloring on their sides. Males have no orange. Its good because the females always show the orange colors, even in the juvenile stage of their lives. this makes sexing small convicts at pet stores really simple
K, Ive noticed you've answered this question before but this is different, How do you tell the difference between a Male and Female Electric Yellow lab cichlid?
@JGS187 Don't know if this is for the electric yellow but some cichlids usually the mail has egg spots on his anal fin. they look like there are eggs on the fin because the female will try to put the "eggs" in her mouth and he then secretes his sperm in her mouth and the eggs are fertilized.
Females are much more colorful... they have the orange bellies... that's the easiest way to tell them apart. You can see the larger Male in the video for a few seconds and you can see that he has no orange on his belly .
your female convict is beautiful she really is and i was wondering if female convicts get their color as they mature or as they get ready to mate please respond back to me thanks
same thing happened to me, when they were young... I bought another pair, tossed them in, and let them sort it out. As soon as I had established a pair, I brought the other ones back. They're only $5.00, so losing $10 to ensure a good pair is cheap, and they've bread like rabbits ever since.
I have been doing research and research on these fish. They are awesome. I just bought me a pair that have spawned several times. This is guna b fun! haha :D
@FishTankFanatic - if you want them to breed, you might try didviding the tank off for awhile... give the female a smaller area of the tank and let the male gain some territory in the larger part or/ remove the female for a couple days and let the male dominate the whole tank, then put the female back in. Have you tried increasing the temperature of the water a few degrees ? this will help them to spawn along with a 1/3 tank water change once or twice a week.
y did i have 6 cichlids in a 55 gallon and they allows fought some ppl told me i didnt have enough. And wat would be a good amount for a 20 - 30 gallon
sometimes more is better, but it depends on alot of variables... like the type of cichlids you are mixing together, their sex, and even the amount of food available... it's really trial and error...
Wow shes lovely i have 3 girls that look just about like that one has some green tint to her but the others look like yours my males have a slight blue tint to their fins
the convict is about 2 to 1.5in the femal 1in or smaller do to the male picking on her. i did but the oscar in the tank for a night the oscar is about 2.5 to 3in. The male convict made his night in the tank a living hell so i took the oscar out. also what sand did you use?
I took sand right off a local fresh water beach. I had to rinse it all out really good and my tank continued to get cloudy for about 4 months afterwards. It's ok now, but I can't vacuum clean the sand as the vacuum will suck the sand right out, so I just kind of stir the sand up abit with my hand to get the debris floating around while I vacuum out the water. Afterwards, I'll use a large net and skim it through the tank.
Do you have a spare tank that you could put the male in for a few days and while he is out let the female claim some tank space ?
Also, changing the arrangements of the decor once in awhile will destroy any bounderies that the male may have set. It may confuse him long enough to give the female a chance to claim a cave or hiding spot.
also for a 55gal what wuld be a good filterr with sand? ---joker22
My 105 gal. has sand in it. I just use 2 large power filters, you know, the kind that hang on the back of the tank. One is a large double and the other is just a large single. They work fine, but I wouldn't let the intake tube be any more than halfway down the tank. My fish like to take mouthfulls of sand up the side of the tank and spit it out. When they do this, the filter picks it up easily and it can damage your filter.
i have a pair but the male is mean to the female she has to stay up in the corner or the male will attack her!! WHY??? help anyone -- joker22
Well, that's is common... your male probably wants to mate with the female and she is not ready. If he beats her too bad you will have to seperate them.
Alot of fish do this though... even my male beta will shred the fins of the female if she is not ready to spawn.
Another thing you might want to try is providing LOTS of hiding spots, like caves and plants, for the female. If the male is intent on breeding though hiding spots will not save her... they will have to be seperated.
Other options might be... add some dither fish. Something to distract the male. Throw a couple barbs or giant danios in the tank or add several more convicts.
can i still do my water changes even if they have eggs or fry --tities
Yup, but I wouldn't recommend doing it while the fry are still babies. It could stress the parents out and they might eat the fry. I would wait at least a couple of weeks. The convict babies aren't nearly as fragile as some other fish fry. I've gone several months without cleaning a tank with convict fry in it. Try not to overfeed them though.
i did my water change already but didnt get near the pot area where the eggs are at. she has alot of eggs kinda like brown colored and i saw some moving already

@danlewis2344 feed them with high protein food or feed them bloodworms everyday or any live food to make them grow faster...
they have a faster growth rate if you keep feeding them live food compared to flakes and pellets...
now since your convicts paired up the problem is how to stop them from breeding
i already have 4 batches in my tank

@JGS187 Don't know if this is for the electric yellow but some cichlids usually the mail has egg spots on his anal fin. they look like there are eggs on the fin because the female will try to put the "eggs" in her mouth and he then secretes his sperm in her mouth and the eggs are fertilized.
dasadler123 2 years ago
whoa, you will have lots of eggs soon! when they show that much color it means they are ready to spawn

hey litl help cld u plz tell me da difrence b/w male n female by da way very beautiful fish
damafiafz 2 years ago
Females are much more colorful... they have the orange bellies... that's the easiest way to tell them apart. You can see the larger Male in the video for a few seconds and you can see that he has no orange on his belly .

MrFiShFrEnZy1 2 years ago
They get color as they mature, but you are right... they get ALOT more colorful when they are ready to mate.

how big a Convict Cichlid can grow?
sshhaammiiiiiiiiii 2 years ago
females ~ generally no bigger than 3-4 inches... and Males ~ generally no bigger than 5-6 inches
eatdrywall 2 years ago
same thing happened to me, when they were young...

This is guna b fun! haha :D
DMranger815 2 years ago
@FishTankFanatic - I wouldn't go any higher than 80* , maybe lower temp to 75* for a couple days and then raise it back up to 80*. Good luck =)
eatdrywall 2 years ago
@FishTankFanatic - if you want them to breed, you might try didviding the tank off for awhile... give the female a smaller area of the tank and let the male gain some territory in the larger part or/ remove the female for a couple days and let the male dominate the whole tank, then put the female back in. Have you tried increasing the temperature of the water a few degrees ? this will help them to spawn along with a 1/3 tank water change once or twice a week.

y did i have 6 cichlids in a 55 gallon and they allows fought some ppl told me i didnt have enough. And wat would be a good amount for a 20 - 30 gallon
baseballman1321 2 years ago
sometimes more is better, but it depends on alot of variables... like the type of cichlids you are mixing together, their sex, and even the amount of food available... it's really trial and error...
eatdrywall 2 years ago
very healthy. what are you feeding her?

the convict is about 2 to 1.5in the femal 1in or smaller do to the male picking on her. i did but the oscar in the tank for a night the oscar is about 2.5 to 3in. The male convict made his night in the tank a living hell so i took the oscar out. also what sand did you use?
joker22 2 years ago
...what sand did you use? --joker22
Afterwards, I'll use a large net and skim it through the tank.
eatdrywall 2 years ago
Did you give the female any more hiding spots ?
Do you have a spare tank that you could put the male in for a few days and while he is out let the female claim some tank space ?
Also, changing the arrangements of the decor once in awhile will destroy any bounderies that the male may have set. It may confuse him long enough to give the female a chance to claim a cave or hiding spot.

also for a 55gal what wuld be a good filterr with sand?
joker22 2 years ago
also for a 55gal what wuld be a good filterr with sand? ---joker22
My 105 gal. has sand in it.

Well, that's is common... your male probably wants to mate with the female and she is not ready. If he beats her too bad you will have to seperate them.
eatdrywall 2 years ago

Try not to overfeed them though.
eatdrywall 2 years ago
i did my water change already but didnt get near the pot area where the eggs are at. she has alot of eggs kinda like brown colored and i saw some moving already
titiestothemax 2 years ago
This convict is in the process of breeding do to it's fins (blue) and it's a Female just put a flower pot
