  • "LA never considered for those who need babysitters." -- Jurassic 5

  • "An ocean's garbled vomit on the shore... Los Angeles, I'm yours." Enough said.

  • 310 here i miss my city!! love ya L.A.!!!

  • WHat happend to the last verse? "but oh the smell of burnt cocaine..." haha youre missing that part

  • colin meloy probably hated los angeles because there were too many minorities and non-whites there.

  • My comment "received too many negative votes." I am happy because I obviously was correct in my criticism.

  • i like

    alot

  • Isn't there another verse?

  • this song should of been the song for the credits in L.A. Noire

  • @cienh2o

Of course it could be purely poetic.

I never really saw The Decemberists as "hipster" though.

  • I love California. I just hate the people who live here, that complain about it.

  • I can see your undies

  • Is this the official music video? Is there one?

  • Comment removed

  • @Atuchy To my understanding this IS it. Getting it off iTunes this is it.

  • @Sneffy87 Oh, thank you for letting me know :)

  • Comment removed

  • @Atuchy Actually, nevermind, This is the official one. All their music videos thee days were cartoons.

  • ùhm_âný_gÜys_wÃnt_tÒ_chÀt_wÏth_mË

  • Love the FyUCK OUT OF THIS RECORD... Oh yeah, SHOCKEY!!!!!!!

  • Los Angelees IS a Hollywood backdrop!

  • @Peoplecallmeoddy

I believe Hollywood is a part of Los Angeles.

  • Great song! reminds me of "Heirloom" by Brandon Snipes

  • I just listened to this song. And after it stopped. I got Benny and the jet's stuck in my head. And i didnt even realize that this song sounded like Elton's piano until that moment. Amazing.

  • this happened in la like 8 years ago

  • @XeroHeroForever what did?

  • Love!

  • ...but where's the last verse?? D:

  • Colin Meloy's voice is like velvet XD

  • youtubeDOTcom/watch?v=xdr0emjy5Sw

thats all I have to say.

  • Three words. This. Song. ROCKS!!!!!

  • benny and the jetssssssssss

  • @yarneyboy24 yeah that's what I thought about when the song started.

  • @yarneyboy24 Its actually "B-B-B-Benny & The Jets!"

  • I thought they were from Portland, OR?

This captures a great thing about LA, you want to love it and there is a lot love about it but it's also sometimes really hard to love.

  • @importantverbs They are from Portland

  • Is this official? I find it delicious.

  • Is that a giant piece of shit in the middle of Los Angeles, or am I missing something here...?

  • Whoa, awesome video

  • I don't like that they cut the last verse in this video. It adds so much more to the entire song.

  • check out my cover of the rake song

  • saiz)))))

  • Woah I found a really weird glitch while watching this...

To reproduce (might just be my comp):

    1. Start the video

    2. Find some web page where it has the circle combo-box thingies where you can only select one.

    3. Click on one and hold the down key (on keyboard). The dot should be cycling quickly through all the options, starting again at the beginning if it reaches the bottom.

    4. Wait.

    5. The video should pause. As soon as you release down then it'll start again.

    6. Wonder, "WTF?"

  • @megakid39 Also, it takes a while, but if it takes over 1 min, then it's my comp I guess...

  • @megakid39 Sorry double post, didn't see it post first time. WOW I'M COMMENTING A LOT.

  • @megakid39 BTW It may take a while for it to pause...but if it takes more than a minute then give up and call me a retard.

  • Decemberists>Death Cab anyway. Both are good though.

  • I'm not even comparing what they sound like so much. All I'm saying is they look similar, are both in indie bands, and sing a song about the same topic. And @loyalsource even if Gibbard didn't write that song its about his own experiences.

  • The lyrics of Death Cab and the Decemberists aren't written by Gibbard or Molloy but by one silent partner named James. Hence the similiarity - but it's a secret.

  • Proof or shut the fuck up

  • Hey goon guy who linked this, this song isn't as good.

  • It's funny that Colin is often compared to Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie based on looks and sound. This is a lot like Death Cab's song "Why You'd Want To Live Here" in its theme.

  • @TarynLeigh93 That's because one person named James wrote songs.and gave them to both bands. It's a secret though.

  • @TarynLeigh93 Ben Gibbard and Colin Moloy don't write the lyrics for their respective bands. It was written all by one guy named James Leigh. It's a secret though.

  • @TarynLeigh93 The lyrics of Death Cab and the Decemberists aren't written by Gibbard or Molloy but by one silent partner named James. Hence the similiarity - but it's a secret.

  • @TarynLeigh93 It's funny that they get compared... But here's how I see it: Ben Gibbard and Colin Meloy have similar sounds, BUT Colin is a much better songwriter, is much more intelligent, and for some reason I cannot comprehend, Ben Gibbard gets the recognition.

  • <3 this song, but does the tower remind anyone of World of Goo...?

  • @megakid39 it does xD

  • where is the best part of this song?!?!!

i didn't new about this version

  • why isn't this song on their spotify? :(

  • I am in love with this song.

  • me too. My Uncle was singing lullabies to my baby cousin, and he sang this song

  • Comment removed

  • <3 it

  • sounds like the placebo vocalist

  • @Assface2k It totally does!

  • @Assface2k it does not sound like brian molko

  • Reminds me of "why you'd want to live here" by death cab for cutie... Same concept that is ...

  • my home... <3

  • where is the solo? removed the best part of the song ?? fail

  • Living in LA is like a love hate relationship

  • I'm from L.A. I love it here! but the more I look at some of the shallowness that goes on around here, the more I take the time to reflect on myself. It's definately a love/hate relationship....but that's L.A. for you!!

  • its more of a love/hate thing. listen next time.

  • Way to entirely misinterpret the song, darling. Try to garble it a bit more next time, alright?

  • I'm... I'm not entirely sure i understand the FUCKING NUCLEAR EXPLOSION at the end of the video. The most of the video was very nice, and the entirety was incredibly well made with amazing graphical scenes and what-not. But the nuke?

  • Also people who like being able to see the sun.

  • Spoken like a true narcissist from L.A.

  • Yays!!! oh come on you have more than that.

  • this song includes a line for you:

And as it tells its sorry tale

    In harrowing detail

    Its hollowness will haunt you

    Its streets and boulevards

    Orphans and oligarchs it hears

    A plaintive melody

    Truncated symphony

  • alot of LA is really poor I'm not sure what you mean at all, you probably live out in the valley or not even from here just a suburb of a suburb

  • As a native Southern Californian this song pretty much captures the love hate relationship I think everyone has to a certain extent with this city. The drug ref at the end is perfect - this place makes you so sick you can't help but want more of it.

  • @redcorpse im also a native of SoCal.. 90245 this song is perfect!

  • it skipped an entire verse!!!!!!

  • what do los angeleeees undies look like?

  • what undies?? lol

  • i hope that los angeles is driven into the sea.

  • I love the first 40 seconds,The nice think layer of smog. Then with Santa Monica/Venice beach's polluted waters.

  • ba-ba-ba-benny and the jetsss... thanks dude, now thats all im gonna think about when i listen to this song.

  • the opening reminded me of benny and the jets

  • Video doesn't fit the music.

  • You think that's bad, you should see the The Infanta video by Mazhac... terrible... just terrible... *shakes head solemnly*

  • I take it you've never been to LA?

  • I've lived in LA the past five years.

  • This song always reminded me a bit of Ben Folds.

  • wow, people bring up cities and countries? chiiiilll.

on another note: would love to know who made this video. shame they left out the oh-so-loved end though.

  • Saint Louis & Louisville Babies! I love them live, and it was an extreme pleasure to see Colin live. And, Los Angeles I'm Yours.

  • I Can See Your Undies.......

Fucking caught me off guard with that line.

    Awesome band though.

    5/5

  • Yeah where's the "smell of burnt cocaine" verse?

    grumble grumble grumble

  • I love the "Undies" verse, but you're right, they chopped out much of the song. Pourquoi?

In any case, what better place to skewer than LA?

  • Texas? Alaska?

  • Well, you got me there. But let's talk cities....

  • Wasillia? New York? Detroit?

  • Oh stop! I'm originally from the Detroit 'burbs, and it's just too sad to skewer the Motor City. New York--c'mon, way cooler than LA! Wasilla--is Sarah the only wingnut from there, or are they all like her?

I live in the latte-sipping, cloud viewing, Polartec wearing capital of America, Seattle.

    Easy, now...

  • FYI, the D's are from our "Sister City", Portland.

It's up to debate as to which city has the worse weather from November to May.

Even so, at least we are people of substance!

  • Everyone that drinks the water in Portland becomes amazing musicians. I need a sip please.

  • I know! So, close, yet so far! At least they usually include Seattle on their tours.

I always think of Elliott Smith, who got his start in Portland (and started doing smack in LA). Maybe if he had been as much of a wily smart ass as Colin, he'd still be here. Then again, his songs wouldn't be such heart wrenching and universally identifiable odes to Some Emotionally Scarring Experience We've All Been Through..

But, back to My Man Colin...Gotta catch up with the D's soon!

  • Hey where is the third verse? it is my favorite

  • Is it just me of are half these comments generic retarded insults. Like this quote "Eat a bowl of fuck, dipshit."... yeah... that's a REALLY literate sentence.

  • And when you reply, you grace them with your clearly superior intellectuality. This is youtube. What's new?

  • "eat a bowl of fuck, dipshit"

    best insult ever

  • i will always love the decemberists :)

  • can people stop being rude please?

    thank you.

This is the first time i heard this song and loved it.

    Awesome band.

  • :D

I listened to maybeee, one of their songs before a LONG time ago, and finally comming back i'm just thinking to myself... so this is what i've been missing out on?!

    I really likesss :P

  • I don't like his voice.

  • so don't listen.

  • An unbelieveable Lyracist, almost as good as Fish.

Anyone tell me if they write thier own stuff?

    Cheers

  • Yes, they do write all their own stuff.

  • don't be so cruel dude.

  • how am i being cruel?

  • You compared them to Phish.

  • i think you have the wrong end of the wrong stick.

Fish the Ex-singer and very good lyracist of Marillion.

    God help us all...

  • He's talking about the American hippy band Phish. You probably haven't heard of them if you are from the U.K.

  • Yeah but Me55enger, the original comment poster, was talking about a completely different person from a completely different band, and cloudburst1232 went off on him because he's too fucking thick to even think for a second that someone else could be right but in a different sense.

  • great song

  • The retirement place of the damned

  • That would be Florida.

  • i found a penny once

  • I sifted through several pages trying to see if this was asked/answered but:

What is the video for this from originally? I swear I saw this somewhere else..

  • So, of course, all the ignorant commenters think this song celebrates the foetid wasteland that is L.A.

    "How I abhor this place

    Its sweet and bitter taste

Has left me wretched, retching on all fours"

  • being superior on the internet is fun

  • lol nerd rage

  • ..because we sure can't choose to both celebrate AND abhor a place, right guys?

  • "Truncated symphony" is right; this video clips out the most damning part of the song: "Oh what a rush of ripe élan Languor on divans Dalliant and dainty But oh, the smell of burnt cocaine The dolor and decay It only makes me cranky Oh great calamity, Ditch of iniquity and tears How I abhor this place Its sweet and bitter taste Has left me wretched, retching on all fours Los Angeles, Im yours"
  • haha I actually really like this song =) "I can see your undies" haha I cracked up>>>>I lvoe it when artists use joking owrds seriously in songs...great video too!

  • This is amazing, did you make this?

  • Nice work! Absolutely lovely!

  • Holy shit, did you make this?

  • I love the Tower in the video...BUY, LOOT, etc.

  • wow love the song and lov the vid, great job!

  • surfing back through the comments and all are about the song....come on people, check out the animation! really nice work, i felt like i was flying through the whole scene. Awesome, wild depiction of an equally incredible song!

  • haha my roomates and i used to listen to this song when we ll lived in LA together all the time...it brought humour to the fact that we lived in that sh**thole...the song is a perfect description of LA....and yes it is funnywhen peole think there is some kind of glorification of LA in this song when th opposite is true....hate the city, loved my time there :)

  • yo...DONT listen to this version

    it completely omits the bridge

    with the dope instrumentation

and that is the WHOLE SONG.....
