  • I love chocky, just bought a first edition Chocky book from 1968 :)

  • @MadHobbitStuff

    Cool. :)

  • @weegerri1sm yeah, it will be once the movie comes out eventually, then its worth X10 more :)

  • @MadHobbitStuff

True.. I like your thinking. ;)

  • Programme makers for childrens tv in the 1980's really credited their audience with a lot of intelligence. Seems incredible in this day and age that a programme this atmospheric and sophisticated was made for children. A really enjoyable series,

  • CHOCKY CHOCKY total flashback haunting theme tune. this freaked me out as a kid

  • My Mate Tim is sat here and he is having a Chocky flashback which is scaring the beejesus out of him.... I think it might be the drugs and he could've whited out but judging by the look on his face he's gonna need several years of intensive therapy! That is some creepy shit!

  • @dylanfatdog

HAHA! He'll be fine. Just flap your hands in front of him doing the "birds, birds, birds" routine.

He'll either laugh hysterically... or need committed! XD

  • @weegerri1sm To be honest Tim's be treading a fine line for a while now. The Chocky experience has sadly pushed him over the edge and now he's locked himself in the bathroom with the windows open and a Bic lady shave..... He's screaming "its the voice, Chocky's voice! It's telling me to shave all my body hair off"

    Pray for poor Timmy!

  • @weegerri1sm

Hey! I remember a chapter in which they

throw a brick to the water asking themselves why those wawes caused in the water are circles and not squares . Could you tell me which chapter is that ??? (send link, please)

  • january 1984 i think, i remember being interested in this after a saw i presume was a new series trailer or maybe read something and tried to get the kids aware of it at school b4 the first episode..managed to rope a few in, not loads though..new series coming up... about an alien u cant really see...a lonely alien u cant see much and a kid our age...hmm really ok then.

  • 'men in black' by the stranglers @ 0:35

  • @wikkidprawn

    Hmmm... similar sounding synth descent...

  • I never use to watch this as a kid as it s*** me up too much especially that creepy intro. Still puts a shiver down my spine 30 years on!

  • anybody know who wrote the music?

  • @markswiftmelodies

    A composer named John Hyde.

  • @weegerri1sm

I realise it was probably DeWolfe library music or similar, but the fact he is not credited is scandalous.

  • @markswiftmelodies

He's credited during the end titles..

  • @weegerri1sm

he isn't on my DVD! i scoured the credits of every episode....nothing.

  • @markswiftmelodies

Odd... I have the entire trilogy on DVD with the programmes exactly as broadcast in the 80s and I've just checked through it myself and you're right. His name doesn't appear until the 3rd series, (Chocky's Challenge), where it does appear in the end credits as "Original Music by John Hyde"! o.O

  • I have the full series of this, fucking epic sho, even now, the story line is fucking awesome, shame Spielberg has got his filthy little claws on it and is in the process of making a movie...fucking hollywood twats...

  • @Project25o1

hmmm... I am gonna give Spielberg a chance on this one. It was either be brilliant or worse than dreadful.

    We'll see.

  • I never knew this was a series... all I saw was a short one on Nickelodeon's "Special Delivery" one year..

  • @MasterEiji

There were three series in total but the first was the only one based on the original John Wyndham novel.

It's also the best of the trilogy.

  • yummy. chocky. i like chocolate. one chocky with cream please.

  • I hate to say this, As a child I LOVED this program, a few days ago I happened across this, the Aaaah scared the living crap out of me, then I had a sleepless night wondering about 'bodiless' intelligences communicating with humans - scared me shitless! Chocky, a brilliant piece of entertainment!

  • i waited a long time 4 chocky to arrive it was trailed 4ages b4 finally appearing sumtime in 1984 and it didnt disappoint..alienation heartache longing, futility in the face of hope. thames tv logo and jingle a surprise bonus.

  • *shudder*

  • My friend gave me the book for Chocky! Interesting.

  • @GrowTheTruth

The book is actually very different but equally good. In the TV series they made it more 80's and added stuff like the Rubic's Cube and home computer games to show Matthew's special powers developing.

  • AAAAAaaaaahhhh me shit meself, time and time again. Dooooh! >;-/

  • damn, finally am agree whit @weegerri1sm, thanks

  • I WISH I CAN REMEMBER THIS!!!! TRYING MY BEST!

  • I'm happy I wasn't the only one who scared with Chocky intro. This tv program had a strange fascination for me... sometimes I think Chocky really existed, that was pretty strange indeed. I wonder if someone thought Chocky was real :)

  • Chocky scared the crap out of me as a kid.

  • Well... As I see I'm not the only one who thought It was just a result of my imagination. Chocky really exists... Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Yep the music was scary but it was kids tv at its best.

  • Yes I remember this thought I was the only one.

  • @neilcart74

At first, so did I! XD

  • Great stuff, but if you want REAL spooky kids tv you need to see 'Escape Into Night', which is available on DVD and clips here on YouTube

  • bloody scary : /

  • I remember seeing this on but it was very dark and i didnt really get it, Was'nt Series 2 called Chockys Children?

  • @harrybo76

Thats right there were three series in total: Chocky (1984), Chocky's Children (1985), and Chocky's Challenge (1986). Series 2 and 3 were OK but not as good as the first which was an adaption of the John Wyndham novel. Series 2 and 3 were made-up stories for television.

  • Super 8 is based on this

  • @Rgvfan12

Ermmm... pardon my ignorance... What's Super 8?

  • @weegerri1sm a movie thats coming out in summer. a sci fi movie with speilberg and abrams

  • @Rgvfan12

Hmmm... I heard that Spielberg was working on a movie version of Chocky which immediately filled me with dread...

I don't know if this is the same movie and they decided to change the name...

  • @Rgvfan12

    thats my guess too

  • @wysiwyg2006

Hmmm... not so sure. Spielberg definately did by the rights to Chocky and has expressed and interest in directing a film version of it but I've looked into Super 8, and watched the trailer, been to the official website, etc... and there doesn't seem to be any connection between Super 8 and Chocky that I can see.

    Hmm, time will tell.

  • I used to watch this when i was a kid. 1984??? from then till 94 was a massive jump in my life, from 94 to 2004 not a lot changed compared lol.

  • Wow, can`t believe after all these years i`ve finally found this! Nobody i know has ever heard of it, but i knew it had to exist as it was still very vivid in my memory...especially the episode where chocky locked matthew in a room for some reason. Forgot how scary it was1 Cant believe i watched it actually as was petrified of "blake7" (anyone remember that?!) Will def be buying this for ME & my kids to watch, can`t believe i was only 13.

  • when I was a small child it scared me. I don´t remember what it is about, maybe an extraterrestrial? This opening tattoed the tune in my brain. 25 years later I´m looking for it on youtube. It´s amazing. thank god youtube exists.

  • @davidorren1 Totally agree. No one i know has ever heard of it, used to think i`d imagined it, now i can finally show hubby what it was about as my memory is vauge. Love it!

  • @Rebecca1797 This used to scare the living shit out of me lol even the iconography of the Pyramid fucked with my mind as a kid lol

  • I haven't seem that Thames Television lead in for about 25 years, i just nostalgia'd hard.

  • used to love this show as a kid it was the bomb well used to look forward to from week to week and chocky's children as well !!! it was dark side

  • yo la veia de pequeño y no me perdia ni uno...y la verdad que el comienzo era inquietante

  • @TheBaskerman

I know what you mean. It draws you in right from the spooky theme tune, doesn't it? :)

  • @SilverBars42 Thats exactly how i always felt it too, mate!!

  • Scared the shit out of me!!

  • still scares the hell out of me!!

  • john wyndham rocks

  • joder yo ni siquiera nací cuando existia esta serie, y ahora que la he descubierto por casualidad no puedo verla porque no se conserva con el doblaje en castellano :(

  • @RaulStal

What, there's no way to get the dub? o.o

  • @weegerri1sm me temo que no, en castellano no se conserva, solo podria verla en ingles, pero asi no la puedo ver porque no entiendo muy bien del todo el idioma, es una lastima, :(

  • @RaulStal

hmmm.. at the very least you'd expect subtitles, but sure enough, even on my copy there's only English sound and no subtitles.

    Quite unusual. :/

  • @renaquere

Do you know the original company? (Sorry for English, my Spanish grammar is terrible)!

The company that dubbed it and broadcast it in Spain must have archives.

It might be worth writing to them.

  • The whispering voice saying "Choooockyyyyyyyyyyy..." sent chills up my spine. The series was good in retrospect along with other old Nick programming.

  • MAN, thats some seriously disturbing shit!! WooHoo! Happy times in '84 ;)

  • @ariesscorpiorising

I know what you're saying. Chocky, forget Cosmic Energy, just build me a time machine and set a course for the 80's! :P

  • This would certainly make great music for a doctor who regeneration. Mite use it in a spoof

  • @ChubbyBrewster15

    Hehe, it would actually! :P

  • This scared the shit outa me when I was a kid ...

  • my brother and me loved this programme along with Chockys children, and a tv show called children of the stones, truly eerie kids tv. excellent

  • @TheMeltdown23 - All awesome classics, especially children of the stones. Kids of today are really missing out

  • @NWOConspiracyGroup

I agree. I reckon kids would love to see these classic today.

Probably deemed "too scary" by the censors these days! ¬.¬

  • my god i havn't seen this since i was a kid n it scared the hell out ov me!!!! thank god i grew up.

  • Never could see this show when i was a kid, SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME!!!!

But, come on... EVEN NOW is scary!!!

  • Maybe you'll think I'm nuts saying this, but the theme-tune seems to open something in my mind. It's quite dark, yet there's something white and spiritual about it. I've been a Buddhist practitioner for a few years, and get more sensitive to this stuff as time goes on. Just thought I'd share..

    P.x

  • yo no me perdía esa serie. Aún hoy me parece moderna

  • @maviceflo

It's timeless. Still seems as fresh as when it first came out. :)

  • You are not the only one mate. I am not easily spooked but the titles of this series still sends a shiver down my spine even now. Beautiful.

  • 2 years ago i bought my daughter all 3 seasons of this off of ebay on original DVD

she was 12 at the time and thought it was fantastic, i admit i watched it again and laughed at the funny haircuts and stuff lol but for kids its excellent, shame they dont make stuff like this anymore , now its all shite like tracey bloody beaker

  • At last! I found it! I was watching that TV show as a kid :) Much respect from Poland!

  • Wow i remember this one! i didn't know it was 1984 though, i was 10 and i used to watch this all the time, i think it was on after school, one of them kids programmes that started at 4pm.

  • I used to love this show, but never realized until now that the person who wrote the novels (John Wyndham) also wrote Day of the Triffids.

  • I used to see this show on tv as a child.

  • Oh my good god! I remember this! Can someone please remind me what Chocky was about? I think Chocky was an alien who befriends a yoing boy? Am I right?

  • @fraserkatie yes spot on , the series was a very faithful adaptation of the John Wyndham book. Matthew is behaving strangely - is it an imaginary friend or . . . rare case of the screen adaptation was better than the book in my opinion.

  • I watched this as a young boy and the intro always freaked me out. Can't remember if the actual episodes scared me as much but the intro certainly did. Love the Thames TV ident too, ha ha, brings back memories of many a childhood program in the UK.

  • thames tv logo enough on it's own, but CHOCKY! blimmin heck, weird ass 80s - love em

  • m mum hated drwho and blakes sven et al, but curiously, she loved this.

  • Thanks so much for uploading this.

I used to watch this TV show as a child, I looked it up on Youtube several times but I never managed to get the title right.

And now I found it! Yeah!!!!!

  • @joezafine

    No probs. :)

  • my god i used to religiously watch this when i was younger!!!!

  • The music from this show scared me so much as a kid I never actually watched the programme! 26 years on and its still pretty creepy O_O

  • interesting how they tamper with the heads of children. i'm sure that everyone who watched this as a child, learned to associate an inverted triangle with feelings of terror. look around your house and you'll see tons of squares and rectangles, and the odd circle. you wont find many triangles though. where you will find them is in danger warning signs. makes you wonder if there are many other areas in which TV might have tampered with our heads. unsettling.

  • @ImRightAndYoureWrong

Whoa! You're right. Something I hadn't once thought about. Until now ...

  • @ImRightAndYoureWrong

I've just noticed your name. Just in case you thought there was a pun in my reply, there wasn't.

I have to ask, though: If I've just agreed with you, does that mean I'm still wrong? ;)

  • I dunno...

Looking around my house, triangles everywhere. First thing I see, my "elven star" clock (a septagram) 7 triangles, right there!

My 1980's pyramid TV, pretty darn triangular!

The triangle was long looked on as a powerful symbol and, in some cultures, a symbol of spiritual resurrection.

Also, triangle danger warning road signs were around in the 1950's, probably even before.

I think that ImRightAndYoureWrong is on a bit of a wind up here.. but hey, that's cool! :P

  • @imrightblahblah ; )

interesting how u think tv shows can mess with childrens heads when before tv everyone only ever talked truth.... lol

though funny how many find it creepy yet everyone likes the idea of spirit guides/ guardian angels watching over us...

    oooooo ghosties BOOO hahahahaha

chocky is one cool dudett loved this show

many thanks for posting ! x:D

  • Bowel loosening terror has gripped me all these years later. Terrifying title sequence. Chocky was a laser unit that was dumped by Tangerine Dream and found it's way to Matthew's bedroom. I always wanted to see the final episode when one of his cousins jumped out the cupboard and admitted to winding him up with some smoke and lights for 6 months.

  • For some reason I always thought that this TV show was made by the superior BBC but infact it was made by inferior ITV Thames. Glad to see that Thames made ONE good kids show in the '80's. You live and learn people....

  • Personally I HAVE to disagree...

BBC? Those people who charge you whether you watch there programmes or not? Those people who tend to copy the independant stations all the time and even advertise when they're not supposed to?

    hmm....

Let's not get negative. Let's talk about Thames wonderful kids programmes.. Cosgrove & Hall made tons.. Chocky, Chorlton and the Wheelies, Rainbow, I could go on..

and they are still making good kids programmes today.

I will not have a word said against em!

Tengo 31 y todavía me da escalofríos! Yo me acordaba como de una pirámide y de una cabeza de un niño que daba vueltas. No iba mal encaminado. Ese sintetizador pone los pelos de punta! Saludos.

  • I remember the theme tune scared the crap out of me.Fast forwrd to today and i just filled my pants again at the age of 32.Damn!

  • This and "Children of the Dogstar" were my favourite TV series growing up!

  • Got the whole series and its sequels on DVD. Remember watching this as a kid. Just watching the theme music I forgot how scary it it. Well spooky theme tune and an excellent kids series. They don't make them like they used too.

  • This used to scare the shit out of me. Hated light bulbs for years after this. The alien thing lived in something like that did'nt it or am I confused.

  • erm... you're confused! :P

  • This tune would be fucking amazing with a spliff.

  • Music reminds me of Unreal.

  • Excellent, many thanks for uploading! This was a really creepy series. I went off and read the book and decided Chocky was the most well thought-out alien contact story ever. I still do.

  • Finally!! i thought i was going mad...... this has been bugging me for years....im another one who thought i had dreamt it!!! I woke up a couple of hours ago believing it mightve been called chalky......(which is the most inspiration ive had in a long time!!!!) maybe now i will sleep!! either that or ill have nightmares now, that music was scarey!!!

  • Hehee! No, you didn't imagine it... it really happened! :P

To be honest, I've now started to get the same way over another programme that I remember.

I doubt it will ever be released on DVD, infact I'd be amazed if the tapes even still existed, but it was called Vice Versa. It came out in 1983 and was very similar to the film Big with Tom Hanks.

  • This was a fantastic series, it was scary. Do you remember The Ωmega Factor too? why don't they made really good kids TV anymore?

  • Wow! Sad as it may seem 've been searching for this for ages. None of my mates remember it. I was begining to think I'd imagined it. I was well into this. I even got my Mum to iron the logo on to my favourit jumper. Ha!!

  • Hehe, funnily enough, I always thought that the pyramid logo would make an excellent t-shirt.

  • wow... that took me back... intro music still sends a chill down my spine after all this time!

  • This was supposed for kids more like hammer horror after midnight.

  • You are not the only one. I was s**t scared of the music and imaginery of the titles as well. I recently brought the DVD boxset and after watching it again, the title sequence and music still freaks me out. It is certainly eerie.

  • wow c'est terrible j'écoutais ca quand j'étais jeune, vraiment, la tv étais fresh dans ce temps-là

    scary intro but great series

  • ha! i remember hiding in cupboard every time the music came on!

  • No probs. :)

  • As much as I loved this show, I would constantly be reminded that Chocky was always with Matthew whenever he took a dump. Was never easy to deal with that,

Also, the next generation of Chocky made for an awful comeback series,

  • Heheh, I never thought of that.. Did Matthew have any privacy in the loo?!

  • man i nearly spat my tea across the computer whn i read that , lol

  • Heheh! :P

  • Even after 25 odd years the memory of this series is still ingrained in my memory. Was searching through the shows I watched as a kid and amazed I found it. I remember the end of the series left me wanting more. Amazing nostalgia

  • Steven Spielberg is supposed to be making this to be released around 2010

  • it wont be 2010, its not even started filming let alone have any actors been found

  • I dunno though, TheMovieInsider website has its release year as 2010

  • Spielberg has bought the rights to the film, that is as far as the movie has got i am afraid.

  • oh wow - beautiful, creepy and eerie. I read the books and was spooked by the tv series. Great to see this again!

  • It's simply fantastic to remember this show.. I think the music of intro is one of strongest memories in my mind.. beauty and strange and the same time... When I was a kiddo sometimes I saw the starts I wondering how amazing could be to find someone out there who help us to discover the power of our mind.. like chocky :D

    Thanks for posting :)

  • Remember watching this as a kid. Weird as hell.

Was talking with my mates some years ago and mentioned 'Chocky' nobody could remember it. They all thought I was mad!

See I wasn't mad it did exist!

Ahh they don't make shows like this anymore.

  • OK... flash back as a kid watching this show...talk about gosebumps and yes that scared the shit outta me too...

  • Bloody hell, I completely agree with the above comments as a 6-7 year old watching this.. Wow, I've always remembered bits from the show, but could not place them... Amazing that I found it!!.. It is creepy though, but it's a shame they don't make stuff like this now days (with substance that is)...

  • I have no idea what made me search for 'chocky' on youtube but that just scared the shit out of me. I'm 33.

  • Gavinpow: Thames was trying to drive us crazy, as you can see. Some of us developed certain taste for the strangest shows, music and that stuff. I have never left these tendencies.

  • those aliens are as bad at making clay heads as lionel ritchies blind schoolgirl lover.

  • @alanlovedog FUCKING HELL, thats FUNNY!!!!! AhAhAhAAAAHH!!! ;)

  • @ariesscorpiorising *smirks* XD

  • I went and bought this series on DVD. I'm 32. When I saw it as a kid I felt freaked out, but fancied Albertine. I watched some of the DVD when I got it, didn't fancy albertine any more, but was actually more freaked out. I'm a big Dr Who fan and was never freaked by that. WTF was Thames trying to do to kids in the 80s? lol

  • Comment removed

  • HAHA! Indeed. Now you can prove you were not crackers! :D

  • yes, it made a big impession on me too, age 7

  • What a strange sensation to see that opening credit now, for the first time since i first saw it in 80's at age 8!!! Youtube is so crazy!!! I loved this and it petrified me too, Thankyou for posting this on youtube!

  • Yes. Chocky by John Wyndham.

He also wrote the books that enspired other classic sci-fi TV such as "The Village Of The Damned" (based on Wyndham's "The Midwich Cuckoos") and "The Day Of The Triffids".

  • Just listening to the theme tune reminds me of being 10 again.

  • I loved this. It was indeed spooky spooky spoooooky but I loved it anyway!

  • Spielberg's making this into a movie.

I'll bet any money it it becomes tacky Americanised crap full of shallow sentimentality and other yank bullshit!

  • Seriously? He is?

I loved this series as a kid, really scared me at the time to be honest! lol

  • I was 7 when this was on. Scared the crap out of me then and still does now!!! : )

  • me too i never really knew what was happening i just thought the kid was some sort of nutter

  • same here! haha

  • im as freaked watchin that intro noe as i was when i was a child!!!!!great series though!!!thanks for the memories....and probably the nightmares!!!!

  • This intro will always scare the hell outta me :-(

  • I can't believe it!!!!!

I think I was 4 or 5 yo when this show was broadcasted in Spain, and I've been trying to find out something 'bout these series since then. Nobody (my age or olders) seemed to remember even watching a single episode.

I felt like a kid again when I saw the series logo. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

  • No probs! ^^

  • @bartletrules Hola. Yo desde luego me acuerdo de ella, llamé a mi primer gato Chocky en su honor :).

  • I was only six or seven at the time but thought that the landscape scene on these titles were Chocky's home planet I don't know why. Still when your that age all sorts of things come to mind.

  • Heheh, I introduced an older friend of mine to the DVD and he loved it, but he actually thought the landscape at the start reminded him most of the titles of Emmerdale of all things! XD

  • When this aired in my country i wasn't even born... it looks creepy and that's great because I love that kind of shows... also the voice that whispers "choockyy.." wahh... *shivers*

  • I remember the house they used in the filming for the boy's home was quite near me in East Horsley, Surrey.

  • you all hear steven spielberg is making a film of chocky?

  • I heard that... when I first heard I thought, "uh-oh.. well, it's either gonna be absolutely terrible or completely brilliant." Heheh, place your bets now! :P

Let's hope he does it justice.

  • its to slow paced to make a film like it is in the book, so i think he will change alot.

  • oh no, every time they turn a series into a film it flops. Well........much of the time.

  • absolutely loved this, brilliant stuff ,also my friend collette looked like the boy in it.

she was not best pleased when i informed her of this fact! lol

  • i've looked everywhere for this, man a real blast from the past! I was about 5 or 6 when this was on tv, the tripods too. Does anyone remember Tales Of The Golden Monkey? As ridiculous as it sounds...like an indiana jones rip-off.
