If the grain is even it will split with no more than 400 lbs/sq in if the grain is turbulent it will go up to 2000-2500.the motor will slow down and you will feel the force been used. Stop if it does not split and find a better grain.
The pressure varies according to the log resistance , If the log has really turbulent grain usually the pressure will go to 2000 - 2400 lbs/ sq in. Bud if the grain is even , it splits with no more than 200-400 lbs/sq in. If you go perpendicular to the grain it will not split and the pressure will go to the max , you will also feel it in the gas engine , that will sound forced and slowing down.. Probable at this point your splitter head will be stuck in the log. Pay attention to the grain.
