mic checks serve multiple purposes. one is to get the message out to people, like you, who are so ignorant they don't even know the cause of this movement. another is to provide endless entertainment for those of us who do know, by giving us a video that shows protestors saying to Newt "We object to your callous and arogant attitude towards poor people", while he just stands there with that befuddled look on his face. hehe.
Unless someone is protesting at a funeral, attempting to drown them out or shout them down is not only rude but also anti-intellectual. Do you also burn Gingrich’s books? You might be “liberal” because you were born with a less active amygdala, but that doesn’t make you more open-minded.

The idea is to use multiple voices to mimick the volume of something like a bull horn, I think. Somebody else may have a better description.
