I always learn something new listening to Maestro Bolet. His Chopin interpretations are always so unique. He seems to put a little something extra-special into every performance, but I never know quite what it is, but I always love it.
Well, to each his own, but I say this is some of the finest Chopin playing you'll ever find. The tone is exquisite and perfectly controlled. With Bolet there is never a question of what he is trying to do or say.
Superb! Unfortunately he never got around to commercially recording the two sonatas; perhaps PBS will get their act together and release this recital on DVD!!!
The third sonata is available in a live performance on Marston records. It comes from the mid '80s and is even finer than this one on Youtube. Apparently he recorded it in studio for Decca too but it has never been released.

Typical Bolet - a bit too clean and a bit too elegant and a bit too deliberate and a bit too self-conscious. Otherwise, an exemplary performance!

I personally prefer these to Rubinstein, but that's just me. Didn't you make this same ocmment on the first movement???

@lourak
Also, a bit too beautiful, a bit too musical, a bit too unique. :)
