  • I move away from the mic to breathe

  • Great song although the album was kind of hit and miss for me. I say this knowing that in a few months or weeks I will listen to The Sunset Tree and think "wow, this stuff is amazing". The Goats are great for always rediscovering old songs or albums. I often find myself playing an album that I got sick of or found not all that good and suddenly shouting the lyrics at my wall all night long along Mr. Darnielle.

  • This song never ceases to put a smile on my face. Forever amazing.

  • God what a great lineup! JEALOUS.

  • Love the Mountain Goats, but he just doesn't seem that "into it."

  • 'so this is what the volume nob is for' is such a beautiful line

  • One of the happiest albums(IN MY OPIONION), even though it's mostly about how big of a dick his stepdad was.

  • The most brilliant part of this song is how joyful and bouncy the tune is compared to the "life is fucked up" message that's present in this song.

  • John sure is sweaty.

  • I love this song. It's my current favorite. I like it way better live, though

  • listening to his songs is like reading a book, and you kind of get obsessed with the story and/or meaning JD's lyrics as one would for Bob Dylan's.

  • @supercoolsunday Its like Shakespeare

  • TMG are beast

  • holy shit this song is so intense.....so great!!!!

  • i didnt really like it

  • Why? Just out of curiosity?

  • Funny, I think this song has a very clear melody. Even more so if you compare it to some other stuff, A lot of Dylan's songs are less melodic.

  • it's such an intensely sad song...listen to the lyrics...he's talking about when he was younger and his step-father abused him...you have to respect that he's telling that story...it's not easy...

  • Well, uh, strictly speaking, like a lot of his other songs - every single one on All Hail West Texas, for instance - he's telling a story about someone else through their eyes.

But yeah, the song is devastatingly sad.

  • @trallala Actually, most of The Sunset Tree was, in fact, written about his childhood with an abusive step-father. This theme runs throughout the album, ending in Pale Green Things with his sister delivering the news of his death.

  • havent heard tmbg but john darnielle is probably waaaay better at both writing and singing then them. and hes super down to earth too.

  • BigBear, your comment is unfair and unfounded. If you're going to compare musicians, you must listen to them first. Then again, don't bother, it's pointless. Everyone sounds like someone else at times! "No Children" sounds a bit like TMBG. "Oceanographer's Choice" sounds a bit like the Flaming Lips. Big deal. What *really* unifies these musicians? They're all geniuses. Enjoy.

  • Yeah youre kinda right. I dont remember writing that at all, and now that I read it it was kind of unfounded since I havent heard that other band. I was pretty hiped at the time on TMG and John, so maybe at the time I just couldnt believe that any other band could be half as good.

  • @BigBear - Good man! I bet you'd like TMBG. You should give them a shot. They have tons of great tunes right here on YT.

@badmoviecridict101: I hear what you're saying, sometimes JD is more of a poet than a songwriter. But that's just one of his signature styles. Listen to Sax Rohmer #1 or No Children or Woke Up New - these songs are melodic, catchy, hummable, and all that. TMG can swing both ways ;-)

  • Greetings from San Luis Obispo, CA!

  • You know what I love about this kind of music? The music is simple but powerful and meaningful. The singer doesn't have to be Frank Sinatra or Tom Jones to sound great. Besides, because their vocal style is much more "casual" than professionally trained artists they sound the exact same in concert as they do on their albums! Man, these guys rock! I thought it was They Might Be Giants when I first heard this song on the radio. lol Very original stuff though; I love it! :D

  • i can see why you might think that. it does seem kind of similar to a few songs of tmbg, such as narrow your eyes or something. his lyrics are similar with quirkiness and originality and... you know... darkness and depth...

side note, tmbg = john linnell and john flansburgh, both johns, mountain goats lyricist = john darnielle

  • That's stupid. He's nothing like They Might Be Giants.

  • I dunno... they both kind of carry that slightly sarcastic sense of humor with them...

  • yes, they most certainly do

  • @AegisNeglector Uhh... Yeah. It's a genre. It's called Folk. Y'know; people that have a good message, that can't necessarily sing like the vapid air-heads on "American Idol". Bob Dylan? Simon and Garfunkel? Y'know, Folk, right? The Mountain Goats are totally folk. Super-folk...

  • @RhythmGrizz

Uhh... Thanks. It's a thanks. I appreciate the non-sarcastic, non-pretentious manner in which you replied to my post. Until you filled me in I was quite ignorant to this genre of which you speak. What did you call it: "F-fowlck...Foalc music"? Nice. Is this a new genre? I like it!

  • His facial expressions when he sings "Dance" in the first chorus are amazing.

This video is amazing, The Mountain Goats are amazing.

  • possibly the best song ever written.

  • you're an idiot, this song is excellent

  • maybe.

  • i yelled Dance Music!!

  • me toooo !!!! yaaaaaaaay !!!!

  • I hate you for being at that show...

...but i love you for posting this video...

    RRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHH!

    spoiled Toronto brat!

    LOL
