THIS IS THE FIRST JAPAN SONG I EVER HEARD AFTER GROWING UP LISTENING TO ERIK SATIE AND CLAUDE DEBUSSY, SO YOU CAN IMAGINE I WAS RATHER FASCINATED. AFTER OVER TWENTY YEARS OF LISTENING TO GENTLEMEN TAKE POLAROIDS, IT STILL HOLDS ITS INTEREST.
@kcufdam me 51 as well.....................prog and jazz rock all my life with much classical too. However when this lovely band appeared I was truly mesmerised.
The only new romantics I listened to i'm afraid!
Timeless classic song from the most underrated group ever..... Oh !! to have a reunion like so many 80's groups have recently done( with much less talent )
On the Night Shift again. I wondered 30 year ago when I first heard this wot nite shift would be like? well now I know. Time for beer at 07:00 am ye ha. Its Friday night ish.
I have the programmes from both concerts. I showed them to my old man at the time. He saiid Mick Karn looks like he has wankers doom. Never knew what he meant then.
Not ever heard Satie, but take word for it. David Sylvian was voted the best looking man for 3 years running in the early 80's, I fancied him to death as a teenager. I love all Japan, then and now and I love Brilliant Trees his first solo album, wonder if his skin is so fabulous now he is in his 50's.....
If you want to open up a lot of understanding about 20th century music, you must hear Satie. Contemporary/friend/mentor of Debussy and others of that turn-of-the-century Paris scene, and ultimate influence on people like Eno, and obviously, Barbieri, and many others who employ spare harmonies and melodies. Gotta hear Satie. The father of ambient music, he.
I agreed, Gary Numan has made a synthesizer version of Erik Satie's Gymnopedie # 1 as the B side of one of his singles, totally amazing. He's definitely a big influence and a great composer. I think Gymnopedie # 3 has much influence on 'Night Porter'. Love this song, one of my favorite Japan's song.
@tapkae You are totally correct. Rumour has it that Satie once told his audience to chat away during one of his performances. If Satie was alive in the early 1980's he could probably have sued. HUGE influence on all sorts of people, all the way through to Aphex (check out the durgks album , cant remember how to spell it). Anyway, satie is bliss. debussy too. Bach gets ripped off all the time. "sampling' goes back a long way
Of wild party in Brussels's VUB (university) 1985,.. party till morning in open air, ..and just when the sun rises,.. DJ slows down the beat to this track from Japan,... people slow dancing,, sun rays hitting the dew covered lawns,.. what a song !
Slightly haunting and surreal!

Ja idd, ik hoorde hem voor het laatst op de Nederlandse radio voorbij komen tijdens de top 2000 op Radio 2.
Bij 3FM, de zender die ik normaal gesproken altijd luister komt hij nooit voorbij.

Listening to the old Japan material just makes me realise what a bottomless well of talent David has.
...And the former "pretty boy" is now a beautiful man who sings from the heart.
As he always has.
