Today's FYROM (prior to World War II was called Vardarska) was Stalin's plan to snatch from the allies (Churchill and Truman) the port of Thessaloniki: the north province of Greece, Macedonia (birthplace of Alexander). Part of FYROM along with Macedonia (in Greece) was the bait for the Greek communists to start a separatist civil war and have a country of their own. They lost. In the ancient Greek world, some city states were first class (e.g. Sparta, Athens, Corinth) and some were thought of "second class" (e.g. Macedonians, Phocians etc). Today's FYROMians are Slavs and are not related to ancient Macedonians. To survive as a nation in the Balkans, they need deep history roots. They have adopted as their roots (artificially, since the time of Stalin) ancient Macedonia.
