Great theme for a great movie... it really fits the tone of the movie and sets the tone of the movie. My third favorite western (and like the AFI "top 10" list, behind only The Searchers and High Noon).
Alan Ladd was a star athlete in school; a champion diver. Known as Tiny, he also ran a food stand. Redford owes a lot to him actually, as Alan was a prototype for Bob Redford.
Personally I cannot imagine the movie Shane can be complete without this theme song 'Far Away Hills" This piece of music stuck with me for 50 years and whenever I hear this song, I always remember Shane (Allan Ladd) the stranger who in the movie came from no where and left in the end to no where.
There had been many 'conspiracy theories'. 1 he was wounded by a gun shot and he left to die alone. 2. he had fallen in love with a married woman and he must leave to avoid a sticky problem. Sad ending
i wonder do we have the calibre of actors today as we did back then ..i saw a screen test for GONE WITH THE WIND of CLAUDETTE COLBERT [its here on you tube ]..whent hey told her to change into all thesedifferent emotions she was fabulous, switching from one to another .. [Scarlet role]...some of the others[about 200 total] couldnt do it ..in fact she was going to get the role but Selzniks next door neighbors were the OLIVIERS and mrs. olivier was vivien leigh ..off the subject but interesting
Alan Ladd was a tough cat ..small in stature[ he had to stand on a box sometimes to be even with who he was talking to on the set] .. but no one to fool with in life ...when his wife was about to lose a child in birth ; the doctor told him pick or choose which one to save ..Alan told him ''you save both or else'' and he wasnt joking and the doctor went back in and saved both ..im pretty sure the baby was ALAN jr, the producer .
@mlkemper He was indeed a little tough guy, but life and 'drink' got the better of him in the end and he couldn't take it anymore......but what a movie he made in SHANE one of the best westerns of them all.....he should have been nominated for an Oscar for this performance.
I love this movie, too. The musical theme is magnificent, and it is an excellent fit for the movie. Show tunes and soundtracks are favorites. Unlike classical music, the movie creates the image. My "pick me ups" like the themes from Quigley Down Under, Paint Your Wagon, Man from Snowy River, The Magnificent Seven, to name a few, are great for gloomy days. Only 21,000 hits on this great son; a lot of perple are missing a great one.
One of the greatest westerns with a common theme from the fifties onwards, the passing of an era. Perfect cast, with Jean Arthur looking considerably younger than her 50 years in her farewell performance.
@jshrig This theme is magnificent, and particularly so as a mood-setter for the movie. I wonder why no one has posted the version of "Leaving Cheyenne" from this movie?

Beautiful score by Victor Young. His work in "Around The World In 80 Days" is also magnificent. George Stevens´ film is a classic.
