This is by far the best clay court tennis match in the last 20 years. Better than the 3 set semi-final match between Nadal Djokovic in Madrid 2009.
This was before Nadal starting improving, and developing his game to be a more complete player, and you can see his raw talent, power and will to fight, fight and fight. At age 17, against the best clay court player at that time (much respect to Coria), you know this kid was something else!
This is the way clay court tennis SHOULD be played!
What i said is not ridiculous nor untrue. Djokovic improved his stamina on par and he can actually control the ball similar to coria here and battle non-stop. People say his wins are lucky but he will beat nadal again in future, definitely won't stop after this. The other pretenders who only hit hard, hit way too many unforced errors. Technique still owned, look at tomic. Today's hard hitters only last short term when every shot went in luckily, after which they disappear. lolll
@kumoasis What you say only reinforces my argument. Djokovic's strikes are not similar to Coria by any means, it's far superior in speed, spin and power. What i am saying is Coria hits precision shots but at incredibly negligent speed on the tour, if it was comparable to the superiority of Djokovic/Nadal/Federer, it would be transitionable to other surfaces, but it isn't, it's sub-par as an all-surface game. Coria's shots are "accurate" but not dominating or pressuring.
@gabe228 what are you talking? negligent speed? Nadal's footwork is better here and ran everything down. 2011 and 2005 is the same baseline tennis. If u say there is difference between 2011 and 1995 i will agree. Federer hits harder and more accurate back in 2005, how can u explain? Still, he beat youngsters and able to get into SF and F today. He is old school and if there is difference in the tennis then he will be most affected. I am talking about clay not abt coria in other court.
@kumoasis I duno what you're talking about, i am starting to think you just have poor English, I was having a discussion about Coria's level of play compared to today's top 4 players such as Djokovic/Nadal/Federer/Murray. My argument was that Coria's "precision" as shown in this highlight seems great, but is "negligent" in power and speed compared to the top 4 players of today who can all deliver the same level of precision but with far superior power, spin, etc.
@gabe228 i dont care and didnt read your disucssion with other people. I am based on your reply to me. Very simple, if somebody comes up with this performance today he is winning nadal on clay. Djokovic didn't do different as coria here by battling. He did not hit much differently in terms of precision and power. Nadal still has defensive game on clay. There is lack of player who can play like this today. Maybe coria only plays well on clay. I bet he can kick djokovic with this performance.
@gabe228 Nadal's footwork isn't "better" here, he's simply changed his game today on clay and on any other services by playing more agressively to reduce the tensions on his knees as the game is becoming more demanding. He has the same superb footwork as in 05, if it was any less, he would be out-maneuvered by any of the top 4 players. Your argument that his footwork has regressed is flawed as shown by achievements, his victories on clay today are far more dominating, requiring less defense.
@kumoasis and i have no idea why you brought up federer, which makes me question your ability to understand english. My discussion in these posts have no opinions on Federer's game. Federer's game hasn't regressed from 2005, he too has consistently improved, so ofcourse the game has changed. The competition in 2005 compared to 2011 is far different, this opinion is reflected by all the experts/pundits if you were to watch the grandslams.
@gabe228 Federer is slower than in 2005 and has a worse backhand, that's for sure. His serve is probably slightly better, and that's had to happen to account for getting slower on footwork. A 30 year old is obviously slower than a 24 year old. And this 18 year old Nadal is also faster than he is at 25, which is why Nadal will have to rely on serve more in coming years than before.
damn, you look at matches like this and realise that the level of playing has degraded substantially. Look at those forehands and returns. The level of precision is astonishing.
@gabe228 my comment stems from the hours of tennis I've seen in the last 10 years as I hardly miss any Grand Slam/big tournament match. Was merely my subjective take on it, but I'm curious to find out what makes you think that way.
@fredericg54 just looking from Nadal's play, the accuracy of his shots today are not far off from what you see in this match, but with far superior driving force behind each shot. Both Nadal and Coria in this match had "accurate" shots meant to outmaneuver the opponent, but the Nadal today would be firing shot of equal maneuverability but with superior driving force behind them. Nadal's drives in the midcourt today would be at the edge of the lines, not returnable so many times by Coria.
@fredericg54 According to YOUR logic, then Coria of 2005 would be superior to Nadal today, which is absolutely absurd. Nadal's game is superior in every aspect today on clay or on any other surfaces, the rallies between the two wouldn't last this long for one, Coria would absolutely fail to handle the superior Nadal in every aspect. The same "accuracy" u see in this match would be insufficient due to the defensively slow speed of the shots, in today's game as displayed by Djok/Nadal
@fredericg54 the weight of the ball, speed and angles by Djok/Nadal/Federer today are far superior while still maintaining high precision. You're also looking at a match where both Nadal and Coria had inferior serves and on clay, of course the "returns" would look "astonishing" to your nostalgic-bound, untrained tennis eyes that doesn't consider all the factors and conditions and evolution of the game. To state that the level of play is "diminished" is incredibly ignorant.
@gabe228 I concur with kumoasis. By level of playing, I was referring to the clear cut, peerless talent that fuels their game. Players have just become stronger physically, and much of the magic which made tennis so enjoyable has been lost in exchange. I want to thank you for your protracted, mind-numbing assertion of contemporary tennis but you could've saved yourself the time and reply with "I'm right and you're wrong" as I stopped reading when you descended into condescending behaviour.
@gabe228 to illustrate my point even further, search for (since I can't hyperlink) "has tennis changed" and you'll find the following: "Players' stroke technique does not have to include 100% perfect timing or posture, since the technology can compensate for such allowances." If this is your idea of tennis, by which I mean, the REAL game of tennis, then you clearly know squat about it.
@fredericg54 Although I can't say for how the experts of today would say, but I am sure their opinions would be similar to mine, I have yet to hear the opinion even once during the last 10 years of grandslam that the level of tennis actually diminished. Years after years, pundits and tennis professionals have continuously asserted that the level of tennis has risen and improved particularly due to the driven gains from the top 4 rivalries.
@gabe228 The shots on clay for nadal are same today but his footwork is not like this video. Nobody is good enough on clay to challenge nadal today. The hard hitter pretenders like soderling/del potro can't hold the rally and battle at all. Today's player hit way too hard and failed to control the ball. But if there are specialist who plays like coria or kuerten emerge today they definitely can beat nadal. Nadal was better on clay in 05-08 than right now.
@fredericg54 if all the periods of pure "talent" u admire, you admire 05s? just 6 years ago? That is even more of a joke than any of your earlier assertions. That period of time was probably was already in the midst of the "modern tennis games" that legit nostalgic fans criticize as talentless. I've only heard of the same comparative criticisms make be made between the 80s and the 00s, not 2005 and 2011. 2005 was probaly the least talented pool of the tennis generation.
It's funny because this 'fact' was re-asserted recently by commentators that the exact period you claim as having this superior talent than now, that period when Hewitt, Roddick, Coria, etc were "dominating" along with Federer far-ahead of the pack is exactly the period when mechanical modern players with little flare were at the top. Pam Shriver and Brad Gilbert recently even concurred to this opinion, that Federer had few challenges amongst less talented players in that period til now
but yeah, obviously you're more correct, with your lengthy 10 years of tennis watching expertise. Aside your subjective opinion, if we were to argue solely on objective results, your adored Coria had never been able to deliver anything more than a season or 2 of clay dominance until an inexperienced Nadal crushed him, not to mention your "talented" Coria fails to deliver in any majors.
@gabe228 Where did I ever mention I adore Coria ? Can you read ? My initial comment was merely a general reaction to how the game has changed for the worse. I can understand how you’d think I mentioned him, it doesn’t take a genius to realise you're Nadal’s biggest fan, a person you must fantasize about incessantly. Also, judging by the hilarious negative comments on your channel (a hole, dchbag, ) I can tell this is not the first time someone pointed out your objectively dubious perceptions.
@gabe228 I’ll finish (since I have better things to do) by saying you eerily remind me of a person I used to tackle back and forth with on a certain forum, who, like you, loved to stamp false labels on others and reiterate with snarky, self-absorbed comments. Yeah, I hate that guy, lol
@fredericg54 oh congratulations, adding your life's stories into this discussion. Surely your story about your e-tackles with your e-nemesis have added weight to your argument.
@fredericg54 you don't need to mention Coria explicitly, you had done so implicitly by claiming that the talent was superior in that period. Also, it's sad you had to resort to scouting my youtube channel's comments to mount personal attacks. Since you made such a lowly scum of a move, you should also then also relish in the fact that you've joined the ranks of scientologists, islamic fundamentalists, evangelical extremists that have also criticized me without any basis other than personal 1s
@gabe228 truth hurts, doesn't it. It was my pleasure having this conversation. I quite enjoyed it, as I had nothing else to do besides watching tennis.
Nadal the King of clay!!!! I don't understand how people 4 dislike the video. Oh well it must have been Guillermo Coria, Roger Federer, Novak, and a hater. LMAO!!!
it was already obvious he was losing the desire to compete.... you could see he wasnt even feeling some of those magical shots he created....it was like he didnt even care anymore.....that french open a year earlier certainly took a part of him away :((( and he is still so young :(((
Coria, after the 2004 French Open in which he lost to Gaudio, NEVER was the same mentally. After his loss against Gaston, mentally he choked whenever he had chances to close out the match. For people saying this is the best clay court match ever, I would say no to that. Reason being, Coria after 2004, was not the same player at all. People have to realize Nadal came onto the tennis scene when all the true clay court players were gone or declined due to age or injury.
@czechmate68jj I would agree with You on Coria, but not on Nadal. If You look at previos generation clay tennis, YOU WILL NOT FIND SO MANY SPANIARDS AND ARGENTINIANS CLAY-COURT SPECIALISTS AS THERE ARE TODAY!! NEVER! JUST COMPARE WHO WAS BJORN BORG PLAYING AGAINST ON CLAY(AMERICANS,AUSTRALIANS), AND WHO ARE THE RIVALS OF TODAYS NADAL!!! HE HAS MUCH, MUCH, MUCH HIGHER LEVEL PLAYERS TO COMPETE AGAINST!! THATS WHY, IF HE WILL BEAT ROGERS RECORD 16GRAND SLAMS, HE IS !!!!THE BEST!!!! IN THE HISTORY!
@vyvaz Back in Borg's era, there were alot of tough American clay court players who even beat Vilas. Connors, is one of them. Name me the higher level players you are speaking of? Borg had to battle Vilas, who has the second most consecutive wins on clay until Nadal broke it. Who is Nadals rival on clay? No one, because it proves my point that when Nadal entered onto the scene, there were no more clay court specialists.
@czechmate68jj Americans are useless on clay courts. If you have got a calculator - just use it and calculate how many players were on tour back then, and how many ATP players are here now. The number of players have tripled, and before that - Argentine, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Brazil were almost absent. Now a days - all of the South American clay specialists are on tour, dominating CLAY with Spaniards, and NADAL has to compete with all of them. Americans are rubbish in tennis compared to them.
@vyvaz What are you talking about? Read what I just mentioned above, that there were tough American clay court players back then that even beat Vilas in his prime.
@czechmate68jj and you read how many players were on tour, and how many are there now. IT IS UNCOMPAREBLE! Tennis is now in every little village in South America, Spain, Eastern Europe or Russia, all of the tennis academies, they create MUCH, MUCH more tour players, than just in the early days. Tennis has grown a lot, especially clay tennis, you can not compare it to the earlier days. Nadal has got the highest level of rivalry there has ever been. Players now push their bodies to absolute MAX!!!
@vyvaz What highest rivalry are you talking about? Nadal had to wait 6 or 7 years before someone like Djokovic can even threaten him on clay. You are right about the quantity, but it does not mean quality whatsoever. I can't compare to earlier days? Most of the tournaments were on clay in earlier days. Look at the quality of players back then to the ones now on clay. More players does not mean more quality.
@czechmate68jj right, im bored. you must be the older guy who thinks that tennis was better back then. Well the truth is - IT WASN'T!!! It has grown from few players, to one of the most popular sports in the world. I would like to finish our conversation here. Im not gonna reply anymore. Bye.
WOW. I guess it's because nadal has gone through matches like this that he is so tough mentally now. I mean, once you beat such a player in such a tight match, you'll feel much more confident in a fifth set, because you know you've done it before. And my god, coria was playing outrageously well. Federer would love to be able to play like that on clay. But nadal was just too tough physically and mentally
This video makes me realize how bad I would like to see someone who could really challenge Nadal on clay. The tennis they would produce would be out of this world.
@martinezaguado It's the other way around. Nadal was starting to celebrate his win, laying on the ground a little too long. That's disrespectful knowing your opponent is waiting at the net. That's commen sense, you shake hand with your opponent for the good fight he put up with before celebrating your victory.
@martinezaguado actually you are the LOSER. I bet you havent done anything worthwhile with your life or done anything better than Coria ever did with his life. so Shut the fuck up and grow some balls.
@XrenegadeZ Who were talking to you, fucking meddling idiot? You must be a total loner to read all the comments on a simple tennis video and come here to touch my balls! Do something worth your time, like studying languages or working, stupid adolescent
Amazing! The two speediest clay courters of all time, in the greatest match on clay ever played! So enthralling..look at Coria hit the smash with no legs at 1:23! I'm sure Coria sees the short forehand at 4-4 30-40 in his sleep; he drives it up the line and he probably wins the match. Big ups to Rafa though--if this set doesn't prove his status as tennis's greatest fighter I don't know what does. It's too bad; Coria's loss to Gaudio was tough, but it was this one from which he never recovered.
LMAO! You are sure?! Nadal was not even in his prime in this meeting. Coria never got better. That was the BEST he could DO. I repeat: Nadal was not even in his prime!
@flipwarrior sure, nadal is a lot better than coria. but wtf? look at the tennis being displayed, this is almost the maximum you can take from the human body, it's intense... Nadal was in his little prime here lol...
The best competition EVER for Nadal on clay. After Coria left, there were no more TRUE clay court players. I guess you can consider Federer a clay court player, but really that is not his specialty. To me, the King of Clay will always be Bjorn Borg because he had to face Vilas and a bunch of other TRUE clay court players. Nadal is the Prince of Clay.
there are many good clay court players now such as Nole , Federer , Sodo , Ferer , Verdasco , Nalby and all the Spanish players as well but they can not win clay titles because of Rafa
Nadal just won two more points than Coria this match. And he won the final tie-break 8-6...... Awseome match, Coria was leading 3-0 and 40-30 with his serve, he should have won.
Coria was the only player that could have faced Nadal on clay thanks to his fenomenal ability, epic will and incredible defense. A shame his career finished so early.
Nadal was playing this final with just 18 years old. He has a lot to learn yetm but nothing about maneers, we can not say he say disrespectfull with the others.
Look at the final in Asutralia against Federer. Nadal was sad looking at Sir Roger like that.
coria seems cooler than Nadal. He doesn't show boat after winning points. I really wish he had won that French Open. He deserved at least one major. Nadal has gotten six already with more to come.

The competition in 2005 compared to 2011 is far different, this opinion is reflected by all the experts/pundits if you were to watch the grandslams.
gabe228 8 months ago
@gabe228 Federer is slower than in 2005 and has a worse backhand, that's for sure. His serve is probably slightly better, and that's had to happen to account for getting slower on footwork. A 30 year old is obviously slower than a 24 year old. And this 18 year old Nadal is also faster than he is at 25, which is why Nadal will have to rely on serve more in coming years than before.
Ledwix 7 months ago
coria is the peasant of clay compared to nadal, he knows it.
gabe228 8 months ago
damn, you look at matches like this and realise that the level of playing has degraded substantially. Look at those forehands and returns. The level of precision is astonishing.
fredericg54 8 months ago
@fredericg54 the level actually looks really low compared to level of play today.
gabe228 8 months ago
@gabe228 my comment stems from the hours of tennis I've seen in the last 10 years as I hardly miss any Grand Slam/big tournament match. Was merely my subjective take on it, but I'm curious to find out what makes you think that way.
fredericg54 8 months ago
@fredericg54 just looking from Nadal's play, the accuracy of his shots today are not far off from what you see in this match, but with far superior driving force behind each shot. Both Nadal and Coria in this match had "accurate" shots meant to outmaneuver the opponent, but the Nadal today would be firing shot of equal maneuverability but with superior driving force behind them. Nadal's drives in the midcourt today would be at the edge of the lines, not returnable so many times by Coria.
gabe228 8 months ago
@fredericg54 According to YOUR logic, then Coria of 2005 would be superior to Nadal today, which is absolutely absurd. Nadal's game is superior in every aspect today on clay or on any other surfaces, the rallies between the two wouldn't last this long for one, Coria would absolutely fail to handle the superior Nadal in every aspect. The same "accuracy" u see in this match would be insufficient due to the defensively slow speed of the shots, in today's game as displayed by Djok/Nadal
gabe228 8 months ago
@fredericg54 the weight of the ball, speed and angles by Djok/Nadal/Federer today are far superior while still maintaining high precision. You're also looking at a match where both Nadal and Coria had inferior serves and on clay, of course the "returns" would look "astonishing" to your nostalgic-bound, untrained tennis eyes that doesn't consider all the factors and conditions and evolution of the game. To state that the level of play is "diminished" is incredibly ignorant.
gabe228 8 months ago
@gabe228 I concur with kumoasis. By level of playing, I was referring to the clear cut, peerless talent that fuels their game. Players have just become stronger physically, and much of the magic which made tennis so enjoyable has been lost in exchange. I want to thank you for your protracted, mind-numbing assertion of contemporary tennis but you could've saved yourself the time and reply with "I'm right and you're wrong" as I stopped reading when you descended into condescending behaviour.
fredericg54 8 months ago
@gabe228 It's snobs like you that give bad rap to the sport you support, though hardly a surprise since your demeanour matches your intellect.
fredericg54 8 months ago
@gabe228 to illustrate my point even further, search for (since I can't hyperlink) "has tennis changed" and you'll find the following: "Players' stroke technique does not have to include 100% perfect timing or posture, since the technology can compensate for such allowances." If this is your idea of tennis, by which I mean, the REAL game of tennis, then you clearly know squat about it.
fredericg54 8 months ago
@fredericg54 Although I can't say for how the experts of today would say, but I am sure their opinions would be similar to mine, I have yet to hear the opinion even once during the last 10 years of grandslam that the level of tennis actually diminished. Years after years, pundits and tennis professionals have continuously asserted that the level of tennis has risen and improved particularly due to the driven gains from the top 4 rivalries.
gabe228 8 months ago
@gabe228 The shots on clay for nadal are same today but his footwork is not like this video. Nobody is good enough on clay to challenge nadal today. The hard hitter pretenders like soderling/del potro can't hold the rally and battle at all. Today's player hit way too hard and failed to control the ball. But if there are specialist who plays like coria or kuerten emerge today they definitely can beat nadal. Nadal was better on clay in 05-08 than right now.
kumoasis 8 months ago

Pam Shriver and Brad Gilbert recently even concurred to this opinion, that Federer had few challenges amongst less talented players in that period til now
gabe228 8 months ago
but yeah, obviously you're more correct, with your lengthy 10 years of tennis watching expertise. Aside your subjective opinion, if we were to argue solely on objective results, your adored Coria had never been able to deliver anything more than a season or 2 of clay dominance until an inexperienced Nadal crushed him, not to mention your "talented" Coria fails to deliver in any majors.
gabe228 8 months ago
@gabe228 Where did I ever mention I adore Coria ? Can you read ? My initial comment was merely a general reaction to how the game has changed for the worse. I can understand how you’d think I mentioned him, it doesn’t take a genius to realise you're Nadal’s biggest fan, a person you must fantasize about incessantly. Also, judging by the hilarious negative comments on your channel (a hole, dchbag, ) I can tell this is not the first time someone pointed out your objectively dubious perceptions.
fredericg54 8 months ago
@gabe228 I’ll finish (since I have better things to do) by saying you eerily remind me of a person I used to tackle back and forth with on a certain forum, who, like you, loved to stamp false labels on others and reiterate with snarky, self-absorbed comments. Yeah, I hate that guy, lol
fredericg54 8 months ago
@fredericg54 oh congratulations, adding your life's stories into this discussion. Surely your story about your e-tackles with your e-nemesis have added weight to your argument.
gabe228 8 months ago
@fredericg54 you don't need to mention Coria explicitly, you had done so implicitly by claiming that the talent was superior in that period. Also, it's sad you had to resort to scouting my youtube channel's comments to mount personal attacks. Since you made such a lowly scum of a move, you should also then also relish in the fact that you've joined the ranks of scientologists, islamic fundamentalists, evangelical extremists that have also criticized me without any basis other than personal 1s

TenisFreakxD 10 months ago
This was a real epic final! As was the one the following year against Federer in '06...5 sets and 5 hours that one.
cule4eva 10 months ago
Coria, after the 2004 French Open in which he lost to Gaudio, NEVER was the same mentally. After his loss against Gaston, mentally he choked whenever he had chances to close out the match. For people saying this is the best clay court match ever, I would say no to that. Reason being, Coria after 2004, was not the same player at all. People have to realize Nadal came onto the tennis scene when all the true clay court players were gone or declined due to age or injury.
czechmate68jj 10 months ago
IN THE HISTORY!
vyvaz 10 months ago
@vyvaz Back in Borg's era, there were alot of tough American clay court players who even beat Vilas. Connors, is one of them. Name me the higher level players you are speaking of? Borg had to battle Vilas, who has the second most consecutive wins on clay until Nadal broke it. Who is Nadals rival on clay? No one, because it proves my point that when Nadal entered onto the scene, there were no more clay court specialists.
czechmate68jj 10 months ago
@czechmate68jj Americans are useless on clay courts. If you have got a calculator - just use it and calculate how many players were on tour back then, and how many ATP players are here now. The number of players have tripled, and before that - Argentine, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Brazil were almost absent. Now a days - all of the South American clay specialists are on tour, dominating CLAY with Spaniards, and NADAL has to compete with all of them. Americans are rubbish in tennis compared to them.
vyvaz 10 months ago
@vyvaz What are you talking about? Read what I just mentioned above, that there were tough American clay court players back then that even beat Vilas in his prime.
czechmate68jj 10 months ago
@czechmate68jj and you read how many players were on tour, and how many are there now. IT IS UNCOMPAREBLE! Tennis is now in every little village in South America, Spain, Eastern Europe or Russia, all of the tennis academies, they create MUCH, MUCH more tour players, than just in the early days. Tennis has grown a lot, especially clay tennis, you can not compare it to the earlier days. Nadal has got the highest level of rivalry there has ever been. Players now push their bodies to absolute MAX!!!
vyvaz 10 months ago
@vyvaz What highest rivalry are you talking about? Nadal had to wait 6 or 7 years before someone like Djokovic can even threaten him on clay. You are right about the quantity, but it does not mean quality whatsoever. I can't compare to earlier days? Most of the tournaments were on clay in earlier days. Look at the quality of players back then to the ones now on clay. More players does not mean more quality.
czechmate68jj 10 months ago

Saludos.-
