  • This is great in every way, no matter the view point. It is great to see the two together- wish I could just hang out in their living room.

  • Nice performance. I know that Beatrice Arthur (from Golden Girls) was a wonderful

Actress, from watching a lot of Golden Girls sitcom. Her, & Rock Hudson made a

    decent Show.

  • They don't make them like this anymore.It's really a shame.LOL.

  • If you're not entertained by this, then you have no soul.

  • @electrogeek77 ..i guess 24 people were not entertained..(too bad)

  • THANKS FOR POSTING

  • Thanks for posting this forgotten fragment.

I don't think this would have been broadcast on prissy network TV today

  • benalchemist im not judging,

im just surprised that many never thought that he was gay...bad gaydar in those days.

  • @benalchemist74 LOL!!!! Jesus Christ never really existed!!! Come on!!!

  • Who cares about sexual orientation -these people are talented beyond belief!

  • Just awesome.

  • how could anyone have thought he was nothing but gay??

did people live in a cave?

    this video alone?????

not that it mattered at all..he should be judged by his work not by his sexual preferances.

  • @tb717 . we should not judge//

  • hêhe_âñy_gúys_wäNt_tØ_chãt_wÏth_mé

  • Don't call me prick, you dumb cunt. You modern-day american fools think you know so much. But you're out of touch with reality. So far removed from the real world that our parents grew up in during the 1920'&30's.Why don't YOU stop pretending,or imagining that you know anything.I do not need to listen to "the gays",or any other moron who writes on these idiotic internet forums.THIS was my 1st & last time.I don't need this crap(trying to communicate with all you programmed idiots.)

  • Rock was gay... but he wasn't happy ... how can someone be happy slipping around , hiding, lying, denying, pretending , imagining, make believe, deviating on and on it goes... almost till his last breath. Very sad ... I think, he was a genuinely nice guy so the story goes.

  • @onstageagain you are just another typical modern-day fool who doesn't know what the hell you're talking about,as usual.

  • @taiwanatoa Fool? Why am I a fool...? Listen to the Gay's on the tube, dummy, talking about torture being in the closet. My bro is gay, prick. How can someone be happy pretending to be something hes not, slipping around , hiding, lying, denying, pretending ,making believe ? That's a question! Rock was in hiding all his life. Even in the end he couldn't get over the public finding out, He said so himself.

As for U, its work staying stupid... stop working so hard.

  • There was a time before the war on drugs

  • I'm sold! point me to the nearest dealer!

  • @Allen10579 LOL!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is from the 1977 Broadway Musical "I Love My Wife" by Cy Coleman (score) and Michael Stewart (Book and Lyrics).

  • RIP

What do you think happens after we die?

  • ...Is it sad that I know all the words to this?

  • @DorisDayFanatic Not one bit! :)

  • in what year was that??

  • Right on!!!!

  • It's not an ode to drugs at all. They're talking about people doing drugs as an alternative to what people used to do when they had problems.

  • @skinz00,

Well the whole thing is nostalgic hypocrisy and BS because they're talking about alcohol and tobacco as if those things weren't drugs. Then on top of that they're drinking during the whole song as they're complaining about contemporary drug use.

  • @JohnQ1127 I don't think they mean to be politically correct. They just mean they grew up with tobacco and alcohol and now today there's so many different widespread drugs that "everybody today is turning on." I think its pretty cool that they're acknowledging different forms of drug use and they're not casting a dirty look to it,

  • @LordKalbert, The song is actually from a broadway musical from the 70's and it's actually old people criticizing the drug use of the time period and casting a dirty eye to it. But again like I said the hypocrisy in the song is hilarious as if drinking a martini and smoking a lucky strike is safer or less dangerous than smoking marijuana.

  • @JohnQ1127 Well considering Bea Arthur was one cool bitch, I don't think this was anything of any significance other than that they were trying to make people laugh. And look at Rock Hudson. He has no real ammo for being too much of a critic considering he was one of the first Hollywood celebrities to come out of the closet. What a barn burner he was.

  • Check out the one with Bea, Rock, Madame and Melba Moore by user ohbutyes.

  • You send us all the very best stuff! Very even knew these two worked together.

  • yes THIS is a classic

  • this is awesome !!

  • Poppers? What would he know about those?

  • OMG, I am old enough to remember when you could do stuff like this on TV, and I'd forgotten. In so many ways it was a freer time for social commentary. You could NEVER do this piece on TV now.

  • What ?bea looked What ? Oh Cum now!!!! I did!!

    lol j/k I love this

  • Bea was at her best looking during that time. Very sexy.

  • This is the most awesome clip ever! And Rock was looking good!

  • that was to cutie i love them both rest peace i know you 2 are watchen over me

  • never seen this before its brill

  • Some do weed and some do speed.....SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT !LOL !

  • THIS ROCKS

  • BRILLIANT!!

  • Thanks for posting! Love it!

  • snif.. swig... puff... strap it on, Bea and give Rock his favorite high!

  • @nauort23 Another YouTube watcher, hopped up on dope!

  • Whomever wrote that song surely has some experience! Poppers......? I mean, it had to be written by a gay man, that is without doubt. These 2 singing it, so cool, given what we now know aboiut him, and that she has been such an attraction to so so many for years. Glad I found it.

  • Just thought I'd re-share. Unearthing a classic.

  • FANTASTIC!!!......This video truly made made my day.....Thanks so much for posting!!!

  • This is fantastic! Thanks for posting!

  • This is from THE BEA ARTHUR SPECIAL.

  • God, she changed so much through all these years. R.I.P.

  • Who knew Rock could sing like that?

  • does anyone know what show they did this song for? I would love to find a higher quality of this for a production number:)

  • does anyone know what show they did this song for? I would love to find a higher quality of this for a production number:)

  • does anyone know what show they did this song for? I would love to find a higher quality of this for a production number:)

  • "Sniff swig puff and your hairs are gone"—I'm not sure I get it...

  • maybe you're kidding -- but it is "your CARES are gone." :) I like how they insert "temporarily gone" for the last 2 choruses. Wonder what show this is from?

  • @oo1ooo1oo I believe it's " Sniff, swig, puff and your CARES are gone"

  • A golden girl and Bea Arthur

  • So much gay icon-ness my head just exploded a little.

  • good to see a real Golden Girl again

  • Awesome...and nostalgic!

  • RIP Bea <3

  • dunno just dunno...............

  • are these 2 blokes?

  • yes

  • haha there is no doubt this is funny but I can't tell if it's an anti-drug thing or not. seriously

  • Hope they are sniffin, swiggin and puffin in heaven!..

  • here's to the 70's the gate way to the stuff you can get away with now!

  • Gay Icons? Rock was the only one who was gay, Bea Arthur wasn't, but thats neither here nor there. very funny none the less.

  • She wasn't gay, but that's not necessarily what it is to be a gay icon.

  • True, Bea wasn't gay, but she was still a vocal gay rights activist and even left $300,000 to an organization that works to end LGBT youth Homelessness.

  • Rock did well in this for being out of his element. Bea demonstrates why she'll for ever remain a musical comedy icon. Not a word is lost of a difficult lyric. Sounds like Kander & Ebb. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks for sharing this

  • She was awesome in Golden Girls.

  • Woah...I'm actually shocked...in a good way, but bloody heck - well done to the 70's!!!

  • Does anyone know if Rock had come out when this clip was recorded?

  • Hmmm, I don't think Rock every did come out, did he?

  • No, this was 1980, still very closeted. And dtrim84 is correct, he never officially came out.

  • @Oracle12

What do you imagine he was supposed to come out of?And why the hell is it supposed to matter so much?

  • @taiwanatoa

Don't get your panties in a knot. It was a simple question - asked out of curiosity.

  • Yea my best friend is high school was named Amyl Nitrate...dohh

  • That was awesome

  • just the greatest actor there has ever been

  • This is hilarious!

  • RIP BEA! Love you and love this video.

  • Rock is so hot!

  • PHENOMENAL. Bea Arthur, rip

  • i wonder where this video was played?

  • gay icon doesn't mean gay friendly. don't forget: an icon is an object. an icon is by definition dehumanized, superficial, 2-dimensional. I don't think there is any clear rule as to what becomes a gay icon most... (besides black mink coats...) However it often seems to involve a bit of "I know something you don't", i.e. trivia, reading biographies... and sequins.

  • A turn in the sack with Liza,

    is there anything finah!

That will cure what ails yah!

  • When Judy Garland was asked about her gay following she replied, I sing to people, stop the Judy and donna summer bashing, who really cares, just enjoy bea arthur-

  • This was unexpectedly awesome.

  • this is cool when youre baked

  • Oh okay I understand now...yeah I have to agree with you on that

  • Ok...Im not sure if youre trying to diasgree with me or not but im not saying that every person who is/was a gay icon was rightfully so or that every person who was liberal and a supporter of gay rights made gay icon status...I said that was why Bea was a gay icon

  • mercy!

  • "...anything but tranquilizin' right on maude!" what a great glimpse of two icons

  • Since when was Bea Arthur gay?

  • one doesnt have to be gay to be a gay icon...ususally those that appeal to gay people or stand up for our rights....she was both...she was a gay icon because she was such a liberal person and always supported gay rights

  • @ninetiesbaby10 i thought it was because she looked like a tranny

  • @ninetiesbaby10 herein lies the fear of many people who would, otherwise, support us; they are afraid of being labeled as such. Bea could've cared less and probably said "So what if I am?" (ironically). And remember, it wasn't until he was dead that anyone (other than close friends) knew Rock was gay. Unfortunately, it was THIS ignorance that, ultimately, killed him.

  • @BishiBanger I dont think most women have been afraid....they werent nearly as concerned about labels as their male counterparts. But its the fault of America for allowing a simple friendly association to turn into assumption about a person. SMH it's a shame but m glad Bea, Judy Garland and others were not afraid of adversity. I also agree about ROck Hudson....had he acknowledged it, that might have made all the difference.

  • @BishiBanger another modern-day fool who knows nothing.

  • @taiwanatoa

Made all what difference? What is it that you people in today's society imagine that some specific people are supposed to acknowledge?

  • too funny

  • hay as a true fan of rock i must say i dont care about who was he off screen on screen he really was a hearthrob for 2 decades we love u rock

  • This is from a TV variety show in the 70's. Rock and Bea performed as song from a Broadway Musical (I Love My Wife) that was popular at the time. The song in the musical was a parody about modern culture.

  • I can't believe this! An ode to drugs? How absolutely wild!

  • TURN ON, TUNE IN, DROP OUT! :) :) :)

  • @WittoWed It wasn't an ode to. Look at the date...it was presented, ironically, as "anti-drug" (otherwise, during those days, celebrities would have been blackballed). And Rock Hudson even mentioning Amyl Nitrate is absolutely priceless.

  • the government introduced AIDS in the early 80's to prevent sex and drugs....cause this country was awesome in the 70's

  • The government introduced AIDS in the early 80's?

Did some government scientist invent it? WHERE do you get this (supposedly documented) data from? Please post a link from a reliable source. Teach us all about this government conspiracy.

  • thank you

  • TV rocked in the 1970s for sure!

  • holy...

  • How can you not dig this ??? SWIG digs SNIFF SWIG PUFF

  • Please someone tell me SOMETHING,. ANYTHING !!!! about this video. Is it from an episode of Maude? What year? The ALLCAPS description on the right is no help.

  • RIP Rock & Bea

  • you know, this sort of stuff is what America needs...good OLD FASHIONED show tunes from VERY talented people! RIP Rock and Bea......you gave this world such a beautiful gift.....thank you!

  • i saw rock hudson at disney world walking in a parade in like 1978 or something.. i remember him being really tall

  • R.I.P. Rock and Bea

  • loved it.

  • Comment removed

  • Classic

  • Gee, can't imagine why this wasn't aired in the 70's.

  • Love this, love this, love this. Two great people.

  • she's dead

  • I believe masclatin's comment was directed at the youtube user "Arthur5041975" and not to Bea Arthur.

  • It doesn't seem that being gay is your only problem Arthur...how about latent Homophobia as well...must reduce your number of friends a lot unless you are a hypocrit too.

  • gosh Bea Arthur was a wonderful actor!

  • 2:25 oh goood

  • you can definitely smell rancid homophobia wafting of you

  • Hey, Arthur. I'm a gay man too. A suggestion: then you don't be promiscuous. (why do I suspect you're a judgemental "Christian"?

  • Not everything can be as well balanced as you, Arthur. Many people, gay or straight, turn to promiscuity to chase away whatever they're dealing with. Instead of having a problem with them, have a little sympathy-- often they need help.

  • Christ, you're bitter

  • ummm you're a douche bag!

  • Rest In Peace Bea and Rock I love You Both!

  • oh the 70's now we can get and drunk together,. and all is right with the world XD

  • love you bea! you were a true and unique beauty.

  • didnt she die? :( i loved golden girls

  • yes she did. unfortunately.

  • Simply wonderful! Loved those variety shows of the 70's. Wish we still had them. Maybe we don't have talents like Bea and Rock around any more. Thanks for posting this gem!!

  • missing the both of you.

Now, go break a leg up there!

  • She was truly one of the best actresses and performers around.

    RIP

  • there's no generation gap - just different terms. hope you're rocking somewhere Bea, greatly admired and missed.

  • R.I.P. Bea you'll be missed. The wife and i love you!! you'll be surely missed.

  • RIP bea arthur

  • I love the fact that they both have a drink in their hand, each, while singing about the dangers/lunacy of taking drugs.

  • The original song is from a show called I Love My Wife and was sung by James MacNaughton and Lenny Baker. Sadly, the show lost to Annie for Best Musical that year...I believe.

  • still turning them on

  • amyl nitrate was some guys name? lol

two great talents + one great song = BEAutiful

  • How am I supposed to live in a post-Bea Arthur world? RIP, grl - you will be missed.

Two great divas - they simply don't make them like these two anymore.

  • RIP Bea

  • Makes Me Cry Every Time I See This

  • WTF? Did this really happen?

  • I'd love to see a interview of Bea where, years later, she comments on this duet with Rock Hudson. If such an interview exists, I've yet to see it.

I believe this performance was from a Bea Arthur variety show in 1980 that didn't quite make it to become a regular series. Who knows why - with entertaining stuff like this, I'd think it would be way popular, especially back in 1980 when such shows were in their heyday (Carol Burnett, etc).

The set looks really comfy too :)

  • HAHAHAHA

  • Boy, it's great to be hetero, right Rock? Right, Bea?

    Hello?

  • So singing about the evils of drugs, all while getting toasted on booze? classic...hilarious!!!

  • Uh... it's irony.

  • I love this song, "Everybody Today is Turning On" from the 1977 musical I LOVE MY WIFE by Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart.

  • Stuff like this just gets better & better with age!

  • :-(

  • omg this makes me cry Great People Gone For Good RIP bee and rock you will always be in my heart

  • In mine also cats. Lets bet that Be Arthur, Rock Hudson and Estelle Getty are performing a gala performance up there
