To this day I maintain that Kenpachi, though it might be narrowly, would be able to kill Byakuya. Byakuya has a wide variety of skills and is reasonably powerful. On the other hand, Kenpachi has even more raw power than Yamamoto and is more than willing to get torn up to deliever the coup de grace to someone.

I think the rankings are based on how much reitsu they have, while Yammy may have the most reitsu of all the espada, he doesn't efficiently use it all. So I suppose Yammy is like Ichigo's first zanpaktou, he may have some power but he's just a bunch of oversized fluff.
