@smokeyjoy1 I believe that I have heard of folks using hay as it allows the air to flow through and provides some insulation benefit. I think it will work fine.
Those top holes seem to be high in number, do you remove the holes during the summer? All enterances to the hive need to be defendable. Too many and the guards will be spread too thin.
@bdrowe Those holes are only for ventilation and not actually entrances...you are correct that they would be too high in number if they were indeed entrances.
