  • I have a 8 and 1/2 month old doberman female she was given to me cause her owner had to move and he had her ears cropped when she was 12 weeks old but one stands and the other flopps over unless she is on guard listening then they both stand can I fix this problem by taping them now or is it too late?

  • I have a doberman puppy on hold, and before I get her ears cropped, I'd like to know more about the procedure. First, on average, how much do these surguries cost? At what age is it best to get them cropped? Is it ok to get my local vet to crop them for me? And, how often should you retape them? Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • You are welcome. Your ear taping kits went out this afternoon.

  • Thank you so much for making this video! I just wish I would have looked for it BEFORE I came home with my little guy. Where I live the vets don't have a clue about taping ears because noone crops ears anymore. You are a real jewel!

  • thank you for this video .....

  • does this wor on pitbull puppys??

  • THANK YOU for making this video.

  • for how long should I leave them on her ears??

is it adult only, or can i do it on puppies too?

  • hi do you know how long you should keep it on for and do you also take it off every 6 days and let the ears air out for a day

  • We followed your method and our doberman's ears came out PERFECT. We couldn't find the tape you used, so we used Coach's Sports Tape. It's not as sticky, but it worked fine -- I think it just came off easier, so we ended up having to re-tape them more often. Anyway, we're very grateful for your help. Thank you very much!!

  • What Is This For?? I Wanna Crop My Min Pin Ears. But I Always Thought They Would Just Stand Up Straightt?? Do I Have To do This In Order Do Make My Dogs Ears Stay Up All The Time??

  • For the backer rods, if you need to straighten them out, you can heat them up with a hair dryer. I borrowed this trick from making my own nerf darts.

  • i have a Dobe pup, appx 10 wks, and i am not sure when i should cut his ears. I have been told by different people that they must be between 6-12 weeks, and others say that they cant be more than 5 months, whats right? i dont want to run out of time if this is tru,...HELP!

  • i have a bull terrier and my dog breeder who i left my with during the weekend while i was vacationing decided to tape up his ears. She also used spray glue, it stuck so bad on my poor dogs ears that it stuck to his head, it hurt him so much to take it off. I wish i would of seen your video before i took it off i didn't know you could use goo gone, thank you for making that video. Ill be using your way now.

  • The dog loves it!

  • I purchased 3 pups; 1 standard, 1 black and 1 blue. My vet taped their ears last week and told me to leave it on for 1 week and the remove the tape and leave them down for 3 or 4 days. This doesn't seem right. I've had Dob's before and I don't remember their ears being left down for days. Also the vet did not use a post or tape the tips at all. I think I will do them myself.

  • My vet wants me to leave the ears taped for 1 week and then leave them down for 3 to 4 days. I am concerned about the length of time he wants them left down. So I'm thinking I will do it my self. I got 3 puppies and their ears were cropped at 10 weeks. Their ears are well healed. The vet didn't tape the tips at all and there is no post in the ears.

  • soon i will get a dobe and a rottie and i will like to know at how many weeks its the perfect time to crop his ears? by the way nice dog!

  • Help! My dobe is 13 wks, ears cropped 12 days ago, cap fell off yest. I tape almost exactly like you do, but she shakes her ears and the post comes out of the left ear on the bottom. Ive taped 6 pups over the years and never had this problem. Any suggestions? Also, is it ok to leave the ears down overnight? One is a bit raw from the glue and I'd like to let it air out. Thanks

  • @salliewood68 I think it's OK to leave them out overnight to heal, but do not do it on a regular basis. Be sure you screw the foam without the tape into the pocket about 3/4 of an inch if you need to. It should stay if the ear is clean and dry when you tape.

  • @KNineDobermans HELLO,

I WAS WONDERING AT WHAT AGE DO THEY HAVE TO BE WHEN THEY GET THERE EARS DONE AND AT WHAT AGE WOULD THEY STOP DOING IT

    THANKS

  • how old is too old to crop the ears?

  • I just got my boxer pups ear cropped and we jus got thru his first 2 tdays of taping and now he has a day off and then time for his second round of taping...I am concerned, because one ear bleeds where the stitches used to be closer to the tip of the ear. If this continues should I stop taping until the ear heals?...I just want to do a good job on his ears.

  • can i post my dobermans ears while she has the stitches?

i got her ears cropped 4 days ago please reply or send me an e-mail at

  • aww ur dobe is so cute with the little bow :D

  • Hello when you were taking off tape the 1 st time there on the video his or her ear's were not straight kind of you know slanted.....i love that!!! If you don't tape it again will it stay like that because I might get a Doberman but if I do I don't want it's ear's down all the way and I don't want them up all the way... So can you tell me if they will stay like that? Oh and super cute Dob!

  • i have just gotten my dogs ears cropped 3 days ago and she still hass the stiching or wiring in and they told me to only tape the bulbs of her ears and im not sure if thats usually how it starts or should i already start putting the foam in her ears to make them stand, please reply i dont want my baby girls ears to look messed up

  • @Unoswiper No, do not start taping until the stitches are removed. I'm not sure what they meant when they told you to tape the bulbs, but we do no taping at all until they are completely healed and the sutures removed.

  • Me and my boyfriend got our doberman at 8 weeks she is now 3 months and just 2 weeks ago we got her ears cropped. When it was time to take out the sutures, her ears were already standing. Her ears has bumps from taking out the sutures. Is this normal can i tape her ears??. She looks exactly like your puppy in this video!

  • @lyaetza If the bumps look like pimples, that's normal. Sounds like she grew enough while the sutures were in to put some tension on the string. It's OK to tape over them if there are no raw areas.

  • I have a question..I recently got my dobie's ears cropped...but the even with a cone he manages to take them off...he is 13 weeks old...when do I give up on his ears if they don't stand up? My vet uses paper towels as backing...ugh.

  • @gunner14AC Try the backer rod, it's lightweight and if it gets wet it doesn't fall apart like paper towels. 13 weeks old is no where long enough to tape or give up. The right tape is critical. The stuff you buy in Walmart has never held for me. The elasticon in the video holds engines together....

  • how old i sthis puppy ? mine is 10 weeks when would be the best time to get his ears cropped ?

  • @luiluilui272727 10 weeks is when I do mine.

  • My Dobermann is about the same size as yours. Her ears were up good. After about 4 days the right one fell. Now the vet says the ear will not stand. It sometimes happens and it is nobodys fault. Any suggestions on how to get that right ear up? Im desperate..!!

  • my fiance and i get our dobe in 6.5 weeks..she was just born! and she will have her ears cropped when we get her. i watched this video and found it very helpful, but i do have one question..how often do you check their ears and retape? for example do i check every week and if they flop or lay i retape? or maybe every two weeks?

  • Usually the tape at the base of the ear will come loose before the tip, so the bottom of the post begins to pop out of the pocket. It is then time to retape.

If you've done a really good job and you dog has a very clean dry environment, they may stay in 2 weeks. If this is the case, take them out, check your ears and retape. You don't want anything unknowingly brewing in your ears.

  • @Dobe871 Hi we have a yr old doberman with the extremely high Show Crop, and his long ears stand high proud on his head. What we did is we clean swab them clean everytime we tape them which you do once a week! and we'd let them down for a day and we let them down longer on days where they'd stand on their own. You let them air out, but the tape ears should not be taped any longer than 7 days. Good luck with your pup! :)

  • You are welcome, I hope it helps you.

  • ok now i know how to tape them but how the hell can i get them cropped i live in uk???? Damn liberal people

  • @lilblitz hi, i live in uk and will have to import my doberman in from another

country.Because of quaratine rules the dog will not be a pup about 10 months i think, but if you wait untill jan 2012 the quaratine rule will be dropped and you can have a pup at 12 weeks with cropped ears and take care of it yourself.

  • great n very helpful video i want to ask for how many days ears shld be tapped liked this or when we will know dats there is no need to tape ears and wat to do ater this process is there any other step or its d final one thanx waitng for ur reply

  • you need to remove the posts and watch your ears. If they fold over or lay over the top of the head, retape. Every dog is different. Some take a few tapings and some take a few months. There is not definite time frame. It depends on the dog.

  • hmmm is there any other step or this is d final one??

    thanx for replying

  • This is what I have done to all of my dogs. I do not crossbrace unless the ear is doing something odd.

  • hmmm alrite thanx alot for ur help as this is my 1st tym to crop my dogs ear

  • I'm debating on to crop or not to crop. I 100% definitely prefer the cropped LOOK, but I don't want to hurt my (future) puppy just for aesthetics . . . How much discomfort does this process put the puppy through? Also, I'm extremely paranoid that I'm going to mess up the taping and have his ears turn out like yoda ears or be floppy! Do you have any tips of what definitely NOT to do? I noticed you said maintain the fold, but anything else? At what point can the ears no longer be manipulated?

  • thanks for the video its verry helpfull...my pitbulls R ear is starting to fold she gets her sutures removed in 3 more days..will it be to late to tape???

  • is it possible to get the ears to stand without going through surgery?

  • Not to the best of my knowledge. Some other breeds do, but not dobermans.

  • From your experience, do you think putting a cup between the ears do any benefit ? How about bridging the two ears or taping the two tips as one?

    Thanks~

  • I've used a cup right after surgery before the sutures are removed, but not after that. I don't use a bridge because it creates another possible spot to get caught on. Only in extreme cases where they need extra help if they have the Yoda look, I use tape in a figure-8 connecting the bases of the posts and crossing the crown of the head. I've never taped the tips together.

  • cool video could u make a video taping a pitbulls ears plz

  • Great Video

very step by step so people get it right

    Thanks a lot

  • Wait, I can take my dog to get this done when it needs to by the vet, correct ?

  • The surgery needs to be done by a vet. Once the sutures have been taken out and the ears are healed, you can then start ear taping.

  • Thanks very much for the video, we followed the instructions exactly and it works very well.

  • beautiful, well behaved girl :) ....i have a 5 month old male ...i used this method taping his ears at first, but hes getting older & plays very rough outside with the other dogs ive had to mummy his ears with tape to keep them up :) .....also it looks like u breed dobes, if so, the breeder i purchased from requested to use my male, the pick of the litter, for a future litter....said they would pay stud fee + his neutring fee afterwards, will he be old enough by next spring?

  • Maybe. I have a male that I bred at14 months but we really had to encourage him. Also, I think AKC has a mimimum age the male needs to be before he can sire a litter. I would check with them before I made the commitment.

  • Alright! Thanks!

  • Do you know if this works for Danes ears as well?

  • Yes, just cut taller foam.

  • I don't understand, if my puppy's ears were already cropped before I got him.. the ears won't stay like that forever? I have to continue to tape them myself? If so.. how often :/

  • If they stand up now, you do not need to tape them. If they are lazy or fold over, tape them back up. Keep taping until they stand. Usually a good ear taping will hold 10 days to 2 weeks depending on your environment. If they are playing with another dog or get wet or dirty, it will not hold as long and you will need to redo them more often.

  • Okay, thank you! ^-^

  • she looks so well behaved i love dobermans but my husband is scared by their long muzzles , just shown him how well behaved your girl is ...trying to persuade him to buy one.we have neapolitan mastiffs.love the ears up like that too ! i dont think were allowed to do it in uk ??

  • No, you can own one, but doberman ear cropping is not allowed in the UK.

  • I have never cropped ears before 10 weeks, although some vets do it at 8 weeks. I have never heard of it being done at 2 weeks, they can't hardly hear yet, their eyes are just opening. If she's 9 weeks, you should already be posting them. Use the 1/2" rod.

  • My doberman puppy is 9 weeks old and her breeder had her ears cropped at 2 weeks... She is fully healed. I was wondering when I should/ could begin posting with the quickest and best success?

  • There are two products and both of them work equally well. One is an orange liquid and is called GooGone, the other is a yellow liquid and is called DeSolv-It. You can find them in the household products like furniture polish or floor wax at WalMart, the grocery store, or Ace Hardware. They usually cost about $3 and both of them are in clear spray bottles so you can see the color of the liquid.

  • what do you call that spray thing that removes the sticky tape?I can't find one of those..TIA

  • Nice presentation. Do you mind if I post it on a public doberman forum? There are always newbies asking for advice on posting. This is a very nice, thorough and clear presentation.

  • No, I don't mind, thank you for the compliment. I hope it helps you.

  • you got your self a beautiful baby :)

  • I have seen dozens of taping styles and if you have another dog it gives the other dog another way to grab the posts and pull them off. It is also a way they could get hung up on something. I have done it in rare cases when the ears were tipping out too much, but only when it was absolutely necessary.

  • This video was very helpful, I plan on getting a puppy soon, whose ears I will need to post. I have heard via other sources that the ears should also be taped together around the dog's head to insure that the ears develop a strong base as well... what is your opinion on this?

  • Thank you. This video was very helpul.

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this, its very helpful. What an adorable pup. :)
