actually acording to fender japans website, the japanese mascis is made of alder, i think its only the american release that was basswood..? unless its a mistake on their website
I'm not sure why people say it's bad. It's actually not a bad wood for guitars. Many quality guitars are built from basswood. J Mascis actually specified that his sig model was to be made out of basswood, rather than alder. Alder is the traditional main wood for Jazzmasters, so I would suspect that the people who say it's bad are probably being snobby purists or they're misinformed/prejudiced.
i dont also get it..they would say its bad becoz of the wood..guitar should be judge by the way it sound..i dont care what wood they used as long as i like the sound.."and making mistake is the best part"

I just think it's ignorance. It seems that if it's not the old standards (Swamp Ash, Alder, Mahogany) then it must be bad.
Suhr rates Basswood highly, and is a highly respected builder. From what I understand Basswood is a good match for J Mascis musical style.

people shit on basswood for two reasons (at least these are the two i hear alot)
basswood is light and resonant as opposed to heavy, dense and sustainfull (is that a word?)
#2 basswood is easily damaged, the wood is fairly soft and dents and dings up faster than the mighty ash/alder/mahogany trifecta.

That is a great guitar, many good reviews of it exist. For a moment you sort of matched your playing to your cellphone.
Good demo.
