Despite the ironic absence of audio, this is my very favourite U2 footage.
In 1987, I was 11 years old, and The Joshua Tree had just been released. With it, U2 became my introduction to rock n' roll...my first idols.
For all its silence, this film represents the mythical spirit of the band, to me...it's like a time capsule. This was how I first saw U2, and how I'll always see them. And they're younger here, than I am, now. It's bizarre to watch.
FWIW - Opening scenes were at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley.
Back then many of us thought the footage & album pixs were all done in Joshua Tree Park (what did we know - this was well before the Web....when a lot was still left to the imagination). When I first went to Joshua Tree Park I couldn't find anything like the Joshua Tree album cover shot. Then a trip to DV and came upon the most memorable sights: Zabriskie Point, late night all moon-lit. No one else there. Thank you U2 and Anton.
The last listenable U2 album - The Joshua Tree. Not that I don't respect them for doing what they did after. It's just that it was their thing, not mine. That's good though. They helped steer me to the beautiful "alternative" scene that was happening at the time.
This is wonderful footage of one of the classic rock photography shoots of all time. I made a pilgrimage out to Death Valley to see these spots, and it was a spiritual experience. God's Country, indeed.
this was shot on super8 film, no sound track ability. my friend shot on super 8 for them in the south of france, for the inlay of atomic bomb. they're grainy shots but atmospheric.
well this month of april is when 25 yrs ago U2 arrived in "Tempe at ASU" for the first show of the tour........with out a doubt sometime soon that first filmed show from tempe has to come to light!! would have been outstanding if it was included the box set oh'yeah Sort of Homecoming
I like the shot at approx. 2:20 where Edge is in front of the Ocotillo, my favorite desert plant. Thanks for posting this! Makes me homesick for the Arizona desert. Where did you get this?!
Yep, absolutely. If you look at the Zoo TV Sydney performance of Streets, Bono turns to the screens and waves to himself waving back from this video(he waves at :35-37here) and yells 'hey you' Kind of cool, waving to a video from 6 years earlier at an entirely different thematic and musical stage. Seemed like the zoo performances of streets were trying to take us back there. The performances now seem to have taken on their own new meanings, which is fine, but not the same.
