It doesn't matter how "safe" any area is. What matters is that people have a PROFOUND RIGHT to take reasonable means to make themselves secure from attack. No dignity is more fundamental than the dignity of defending oneself against aggressive attack.
I live in Texas & while there is a law the prohibits college students that have a CHL from carrying on campus premises... there is also a clause that allows an institution to create their own policy to allow concealed carry within their premises that would nullify the state prohibition.
BTW i live in the area. my friend goes and lives at Temple. nice place, i will not lie, but it IS in north philly. 2 people got shot in one month in october 2010. that was on campus. literally the center of Temple. Safe my ass.
Good for the student. The guy was licensed to carry it and if defending yourself against someone who is threatening to shoot you is not reason enough to use it, I'm not sure what is. Sucks that the video almost spins it like the student was some kind of dangerous criminal himself simply because he was also armed.
The clueless are led to believe they are safe when on campus. Stop and ask yourself "who" on campus would save you ? If you're reading this on campus right now - look around, who's there to save you if it happened RIGHT NOW ?
So wait...criminal shoots student and student shoots criminal in defence. Why does the student lose his gun? Its a clear cut case. Give the student a bandaid and a good night's rest in a hospital, throw the scum in prison for a good long time and call it a day.
It is an absolute joke that college campuses do not allow students to conceal and carry to protect themselves. The problem is NOT the law abiding citizens, it is the criminals that will carry legally or illegally.
Can I ask why the report seemed to focus on why the Temple student had the gun with a permit to Defend himself? How about the 15 year old criminal who had a gun to commit crimes???
What I don't understand is when you're involved in a shooting to protect yourself, even though you're "innocent" until proven guilty, they still take away your carry permit and handgun. So now that you've been involved in a crime you're somehow in a safer position than before and don't need your handgun? When dealing with punks and gangsters who love revenge, it's quite the contrary.
@bigapple0828 thats why you need to own more than one carry weapon. they only take the gun that u used in self defence. they do not take all your guns. However I agree with you, I dont think its right for cops to take away your gun at all.
nice additional notes to video. I'm a student in pittsburgh... its unfortunate that guns are banned (of course criminals will listen to that), but to them, if they don't ban it, it's like inviting guns, and accidents they could be liable for. if there was a shooting, they can't be liable for that because its criminal.
I couldn't afford a gun when I was in college and I lived off campus to save money as well. But the place I was staying at said they don't allow guns in their contract, even though it isn't school property and they aren't allowed to do that.
@TheArmedCitizen now one knows my real name or what school i go to. we should advertise. by advertising the people who wish to do harm will have point to pause. and i hope that others follow my lead. only by pushing on bounderies will they ever be moved. we lose our rights every day because we let them go without even a harsh word.
The insanity of it all is that the television "personalities" are acting so upset, incensed, with such DRAMA that (gasp!) a student had ... wait for it ... a GUN!@!@!!!
I'm just glad that student was carrying and able to defend himself or he would have been murdered right there in the street. It's sad that the University isn't able to provide safe grounds, and that the student dropped out because of this horrible incident. Hopefully, this incident serves to remind those that no one can protect your person better than yourself.
It's sad that people rather have their buddies shot and killed rather than waking up, grow up, and get smart that self deffense will often means getting the best personal defense weapon possible, a firearm!
How many people here are kung-fu, chucknorris, karate masters? Not me, so, I have to make up for the lack of trust in my kung-fu and be skilled in in the trigger pull.

That student saved his life by being a responsible gun owner. The 2nd amendment works in this situation. Good for him. Any willing responsible and clean background American adult has the right to be armed to protect his or her family.
The 15 year old kid was shooting to kill. Sucks that this country doesn't put these people in prison. I don't care what their age is, they're a criminal.
Campus is safe enough? Does that kid not remember the VTech shootings? I bet if there was another gun involved there, it wouldn't have gotten nearly as bad as it did.
that might be a little to long ago for him to remember, but he most certainly should remember the shooting in the Tucson Safeway (grocery store) which suppose to be a "safe place" as well....but hey who cares its thousand miles away, that cant happen there right ??
I wish my College allowed concealed carry. Right now they're trying to give out free rape whistles and informing people on how to not get assaulted/mugged while walking around at night... I think allowing CCW and promoting the NRA would do a lot more help than silly whistles and tips... Criminals hate the idea of getting shot at just as much as we do.
@TheArmedCitizen I joined their Facebook group a while ago and actually saw this video posted by them an hour or two before I saw it here. I'm a huge fan of the work they do, and wish they had more active people in my area. Any time I even bring up gun rights or recreational shooting in front of friends at school/home, I get almost nothing but crazy looks like, "Hey, he's some psycho gun nut", etc. I just wish more educated people my age were actually educated about guns and not afraid of them.
@PianoKammy here's the thing... most policy states that firearms cannot be allowed on school property but it does not specify how far away from the local vicinity. The real grey area is when campuses are bisected by highways or streets. and that there is no "front door" entrance that indicates you are in the campus or not. I think some of my colleagues do carry their weapons on campus, but it doesn't bother me at all.
@R5H4D0W Unfortunately my campus is fully self contained. There are no off campus buildings... and there are 2 grand entrance/exit things surrounded by very well marked university woods/trails...There is no gray area where I go to school... so I couldn't push my luck with bending the policy. I would either need to decided to abide by it, or forsake it and favor my constitutional rights. I think I'll follow the policy... for now.
dude, why conceal the guns? if everyone walked around with a big ol 12 ga or assault rifle on their back at all times crime rates would go down insanely fast, guaranteed
@commando76239er If everyone openly carried long-guns, I'd assume it was because we were in some sort of war-zone. I'm cool with concealed and open carry of handguns, but besides for rare demonstrative purposes, anything more than that is truly absurd. We don't need to live in a purely militaristic society schlepping around AK's everywhere we go. This isn't South Africa.
@PianoKammy Asking College officials of all levels at public meetings: what level of financial responsibility they and the school can be held responsible for by victims of crime deprived by them means of self defense... may hopefully create an awkward position for them and tip off the rules towards individual rights and freedoms.

Wow...don't need a gun if you live inside the school...where have some "mass" school shootings happen...well, inside the school where students are not permitted to carry firearms even with a CCW permit...face palmed!
@beexsama Yeah let's not forget Virginia Tech that happened only a few short years ago. If someone on campus had a CCW permit they may have been able to stop that lunatic. But no, CCW wasn't allowed on campus and as a result dozens of innocent students were slaughtered in cold blood because they couldn't do anything to stop him. If anything schools should encourage their students to have concealed carry...
thats one way to do it,CCW,another would had been (at VTech) that all the students rush the shooter,at least 5 would had come through and overwhelm him ,disarmed him and stopped him from shooting while bneating the crap out of him, i means he fell as result of it

@2tur Thanks for the update...we want to stay accurate. Authorities have not charged him at this time, and that source is also editorializing against the man for using a gun to save his life. If you get any more updates, please pass them along!
@2tur Wonders never cease but I find that scenario extremely unlikely. When I was at college near an almost equally bad neighborhood there was an armed robbery of a student, always by 2-5 local teens, always 1 to 3 am, always just off campus, almost always with a gun, just about once a month. In four years never once did a student rob a fellow student or a local person with a gun.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't discharging a weapon at a victim during a robbery attempt define intent, therefore moving the charge from aggravated assault to attempted murder? Why in the world is this punk getting a 5 year sentence instead of 10-20?
