Lotus Elise and VX 220 Turbo

This car, i tested a few years ago. It was memorable! :) So the Lotus 111R is very impressive for me since then. :) Just like a go-kart with brilliant driving experience. :) Aluminium materials almost everywhere. ;) But don't tell more news of this car. :)

Lotus is a better car had an S1 and will be going back to S2 shortly .. Put wider tyres on the front and it will reduce all that understeer and give a bit more oversteer.. Lotus know how to build a chassis and always have done.. Why do you think vauxhall get lotus to make the car for them?? Lotus is far better looking too!! Personal choice I know

VX220's are easier to mod, easier to service, cheaper to run, look for manly, cheaper to insure - the worst part is that they're built by lotus.

if lotus gave the car to vauxhall and they built it it wouldnt fall apart.

The elise does have a better setup with it's wheels,

the vx220 has bigger front wheels and slimmers tyres, a good upgrade is to put the same wheels sizes on as the lotus, just as they intened vauxhall put the bigger ones on for looks...

Drove 'em both back-to-back before I picked my winner. Which was the VX220. It's much easier to maintain, I think it looks nicer, and being a Vauxhall it's not a "oh look at that idiot in his fancy showy car" - which is what my old Subaru was by the bucketload.

Plus if you know how to drive a VX, they're more than capable of upsetting a 111R on the track.

Why are people so snobby about Vauxhall badges?!?!?!?! Since the Astra in 2004 they havn't built a bad or disapointing car since... Plus they are as reliable as anything out there and cheaper than the equivilant Ford or VW.

I duno, a friend of mine has an S1 elise and his dad has an S2 supercharged, both stunning vehicles, but i think i'd get the VX220 just to be a bit different, i mean, you don't see lotus's that often but you see VX220's even less, it's not because there worse, maybe its because people dont want to buy the badge but if you can look past than nonscense you've got one hell of a car, just look at some of those VX220's on pistonheads, spesh in red :O beautiful :O

The vx220 was ment to have 16" wheels on front and 17" at the back. Stupid Vauxhall decided to put 17" wheels at the front reducing the cars performance....The VXR220 we be a fair test to the lotus.

I reckon it was a setup that the elise won over the line because it is a lotus and tiff don't like turbos, I got a VX220 2.2, getting rare to find a good one nowadays, am 22, much cheaper to insure then an elise with similar power! VX220 for me!

not saying it would be quicker, but tiff definately missed the apex on the hairpin when driving the vx220 which for sure cost him a tenth of a second you can see this when both times are merged together

Lmao. Look at you, Obviously I was taking the piss. "A poor mans lotus" - It says here that theres only about 2-3 grand between them at new. So I used that and exaggerated it. Besides, the VX220 isnt as nice looking as the Lotus. And at the end of the day, the only thing anyone would take a Vauxhall over is a Rover. Besides, NOTHING Vauxhall has ever made touches the exige.

Well that is your opinion saying the vx220 is not as good looking I am sure you are not speaking on everyones behalf, only reason some people do not like a vx220 is because of the badge, yet I don't see the problem. VX racing are multiple winners in british touring cars and you are wrong vauxhall have the monaro, proves they can build a descent car for the purpose required,I like the elise too but its a bit more feminine, Clarkson rated the vx220 as car of the year in 2006.

Personally I quite like that idea, real driving enthusiasts should be going for driving dynamics than the badge / status.. That's for tools that rev cars up at traffic lights and jerk off at themselves in shop windows... You can get a VX220T for less than £10k, what a great track day bargain you can drive everyday!!!

the lotus is still a better car because its has a stalk tuned toyota with no forced induction and the best handeling in the world and the vx220 has the 2.0 with forced induction turbo and cheep handeling with a whiplash at the end of every turn. so you could still do more to the lotus (not that you have to because it still won) to make it faster than it is

Don't forget that the lotus is after all a lotus and also looks much much better.

As Jeremy Clarkson once put it in and old Lotus Esprit roadtest :

"When u get home at night and say "Shall we go out in the Lotus tonight?" it has a certain ring to it"

I think the Lotus badge alone is worth the extra couple of grand.

But they stopped producing the vx220 anyway so it doesn't really matter.

The VX has the turbo advantage however, the Elise has the looks and handling and there is not much of a hp between the both. If I had a choice it would be the Elise

The VXT is a far better car and was pipped by that bull that 5th gear always do in their tests where they make one car go out wide over the finish line so it looks better when they do the cross examination vid at the end!

Put the VX on the inside and it would have won!!! Especially seen as it came out of the last corner in the lead and it's the faster at accelerating of the two cars ;)

As they were both designed and built at the same facility at Hethel, Norfolk, by the same people, they are both Lotus products. One uses a Toyota powertrain, one a VX, but in reality, they are very closely matched. VX is more comfortable though ;-)

Actually though, I have to respond to my own statement and say that the design of the vx does grow on you....

I think I would still think about getting the opel badges and getting rid of or painting black the V shaped grill if I got one......hmmm turbo's are highly tunable by nature...

The VX 220 Turbo looks better overall and because of the back design of the car, it's not the best but I think it's one of the better ones with a nicer back compared to most Lotus.

I'm confused. He said that the Vauxhall was 28 thousand pounds and the Lotus was 26 thousand pounds. Doesn't he mean hundred? I can't think of any car that can take a turn at 40 miles an hour that weighs more than 4000 pounds. And I was pretty sure the Elise weighed something like 1900 pounds. Do the brits weigh their cars differently? Is gravity greater in the UK?
