im surprised ur dogs completly fine with him. did u have to get som kind of licence to own it.....ive always loved anteaters since i was little. and do they have to eat ants?
Everyone making comments about this whole wild animal as a "pet" dellima needs to read "the lady and her tiger". Its an amazing book and if you respect animals at all you will read it.
She's wrestling you! And even though I do agree that wild animals should stay in the wild, unless they through unfortunate events are in need of help -but is is as adorable as it gets. One of my alltime favourite pics is of Pua on your washing machine in a black in a motion that looks like she's waving hello!
Your animals seem happy in your care!
And I just read about Stewie, so sorry to hear he didn't make it. You gave him a good life and that bond spread for all of the world to share. =)
Eternal... you said you work at a zoo. But you've seen how sick they get as "pets." How many pets have you come across? Just curious. Or is it that you are calling these kept animals at a zoo pets? I'm confused. I own several wild cats, and they are VERY happy! In fact, my bobcat is sitting on my lap at this very moment. He would be lost without me. He is quite the little baby. To say that wild animals don't make good pets is a load of crap. I'm tired of hearing it from people like you
i do agree with most of what you're saying... but a lot of wild animals are best left in the wild. you dont wanna just pull one out of his home. but good for you for giving them a chance :D:D:D.
Yes a bad idea to bring home a wild animal from the wild. But if the person is educated on the animal and it wont hurt the wild population to take one and they can keep it in a manner it is well adjusted and healthy then there's no harm done. Taking animals from the wild is generally managed the same as other hunting. There are limits set and regulations on what sort of traps ect are acceptable. Though the ideal situation is providing a home for one that otherwise wouldn't live in the wild.
Some are but there are never any advertised for sale that are bred in the captivity. They only have one baby every couple of years and that's if you have a very successful breeding program. They never need to advertises. I had people wanting on a waiting list soon as I had a male before. There are a limited number allowed exported from Guyana. They are commonly killed as a pest animal and people freak out and call people to get rid of them for just wandering into their yards.
Of course captive bred is better but trade is heavily regulated and limited so it doesn't hurt the wild population. We've been waiting 6 months to get Pua a mate and it took over a year to get Pua imported. She was a failure at living wild and needed nursed back to heath.
Most exotics are bred in captivity(you can't even import things like monkeys so they are all bred here). Anteaters are one of a few exceptions.
and just in case you wanted to know all my sources of information: I work at a zoo, with tamanduas and I've seen how sick they get as "pets". You are doing a huge injustice to these animals....
You mean you've seen how sick they get at your zoo. No one is dropping off their expensive tamanduas at zoos. The people that do rehome them sell them but most keep them for life. I've worked hard to make the diet I have balance out so the analysis is as close as can be to the wild analysis. Has your zoo done that? I bet not. She just gets a rare treat of juice. No fruit in the diet at all other wise. No kibble either since it's responsible for many health problems in the animals fed it.
So this baffles me. Why would you want the so-called "Stinker of the Rainforest" as a pet?? Also, when their diet isn't exactly what is required - they develop diabetes. It's ridiculous that you are posting this like it's a good idea. Annoying.
I don't have a problem with odor. Only sick and stressed tamanduas smell. Their pee does have an odor but is easy to deal with. She goes on a pee pad and I pick it up and clean right away. I've done many years of research on them and diet and the diet is good and that's why she is healthy and doesn't smell.
When people contact me thinking they want one I tell them all the bad parts of having one and my FAQ is the starting point., linked off my profile.
They have no teeth and just lick up the ants but their claws are good for self defense if needed. I'm pretty sure they aren't legal in NJ they are a pretty strict state when it comes to having exotic animals. For the most part they are indifferent to strangers.
I'd go with the goat. While they don't really eat anything, at least not and survive it, they are easy to care for and get info on compared to anteaters. They are also easier to get.
i have ne who lives in my yard:) hes huuuuuuuuuuuuugee an black

Sometimes. She hates to be confined so at night will claw at the doors to get out. Sometimes she had climbed the curtains.

The laws vary by area. You need to check the state, county and city laws. I make them a special diet.

Aren't they bred in captivity then? I assumed that would be easier and safer than actually hunting them...
