I did several tours with these guys in the 90's. They are talented beyond words (not just the Johns but the Dans and everyone else) and Flans is one real dude. He actually introduced me to the Pastrami Sandwich with French Fries and Cole Slaw on top in Pittsburgh. It was a pleasure to watch a TMBG show every night.
It's odd to think of a band like them being as old as they are now. ..but I think they have long been aware of the interest in this idea of aging. They have many songs about old or dying people. I also remember seeing a t-shirt or sticker featuring them performing in wheelchairs in 2050 or something.
I don't think they're tired of playing this song.
John Linell is doing most of the work.
If you notice John Flansburgh goes off to the left and switches guitars. But he's having problems with the second guitar and goes off to the left again.
They're so sick of this song, it's not funny. If you should ever see TMBG don't ask for this, you look like some sorta fan who only heard this and Istanbul and had them disappear forever. Say some weird thing off the Pink Album or Factory Showroom.
Virtually every live show they do, this song makes an appearance. And this band has such a vast catalog, nobody in their hyper-dedicated audience would miss it too much. They know it's a crowd-pleaser, and probably their finest song. (I personally consider it THE perfect pop song). I'm not saying they still love showing it off as much as they did in '90, but they're musicians and performers. It's their hit. They want people to have a ball. It's not un-medicated root canal.
They'd better live forever

I think both guitars were out of tune.

He only plays a few notes so you can actually tell when he tries to play and it sounds horrible.

They certainly do a good job of hiding it then.

Anyone over 8 years old can see their doing the sarcastic "Yay" thing people do when they hate something. It's grin and bear it at its best.
