what a disgustingly biased piece of "journalism" that precedes this interview. Jeremy Paxman makes me ashamed to be british. Upper class, old, out of touch faggot. Well done to that president - Olaf Ragnar Grimmson - now thats a fucking name.
Paxman cut down to size? The fact is he exposed this little man and his little country for the thieving miscreants they actually are! A convenient referendum to legitimise not honouring their debts, The Icelandic banks have also astonishingly restarted the currency carry trade which created this mess in the first place....I say bomb Reykjavik!!
@MrAnthropophagy Thatcher's MO was to reduce the size of the state and create a more free society and economy. We live in an era of record government spending and deficits, crushing national debt and an ever growing police state. Don't YOU learn?
@gazz12345a It was the neoliberals who deregulated the banks and caused them to collapse, which led to states having to borrow massively to bail them out while tax revenues plummeted in the ensuing recession. Iceland had excellent public finances before neoliberalism destroyed it and buried it in debt.
@JohanRegus12 That's simply not true. Google 'The Myth that Laissez Faire Is Responsible for Our Financial Crisis' by George Reisman. Read that then come back if you still think 'free markets' are responsible for the recession. Secondly deregulation did not cause banks to collapse. Not all banks collapsed, only incompetent ones. In a free market they would not 'have to be' bailed out. Another example of government intervention rewarding failure and bad behaviour.
@lendusaquid We bailed Iceland out you sad ignorant tw@t....and your sh1t country tried to fkoff with English citizens money..so don't come here talking sh1t you foreign bastid.
@philbo1965uk I am English. Since you appear to be brain dead i will make this question simple for you. Are you liable for other peoples gambling debts ?
@mellowNdark I think you don't really know what you're talking about.. there were a few Icelander which got Iceland bankrupted, not every Icelander. And there were also some foreigners who participated in this..
"Don't trust an Icelander." Bollox! Why should every Icelander be held responsible for the scams of a few kleptocrats, now living in UK? It is like saying that US citizens is responsible for Madoff. As for the jerks who lost their money. I have met a few of them. They are so stuck-on stupid that one can't but reach the conclusion that if they hadn't lost it in Icesave, they would have lost it in some other scam. Why should UK and Dutch citizens - let alone Icelanders - bail these dumb fucks out?
@tigranvartanovitch Well, the prelude to "don't trust an Icelander" is that decisions made in Iceland are entirely democratic, so therefore does it not make sense that the actions of Iceland really are by the Icelandic persons themselves?
@ChristopherDone So what you are saying is that if any Icelander commits a murder, then the whole population goes to prison for life? Or, had they the death penalty, then they would all be executed? What sense does that make?
@tigranvartanovitch No, I'm saying if one Icelander commits a murder and the whole population democratically votes for that Icelander to be put to death then they should be responsible for the decision, and you would consider the average Icelander to be someone who supports the death penalty.
@ChristopherDone Oh, I see. Well, they've just voted to tell the British and the Dutch to go to hell. The Brits are already threatening to take them to [which?] court. Funny how the Brits act tough in the face of a democratic decision. But if only one man [like Vladimir Putin] told them to go to hell, they'd go there in a shot.
@tigranvartanovitch Coming back to concrete terms, Britain does not have a real democracy. Decisions are made by fiat. We go to war when the leaders want to go to war despite general opposition from the general public, protests, etc. No vote taken. Now, if Iceland is so democratic, and if they democratically voted on this decision going against their promise as they say, then it's reasonable for the general public to be held responsible and therefore "don't trust an Icelander".
External to the issues at hand, does anyone else find Paxman's interviewing style to be deeply unpleasant? I don't think you gain anything from taking a one-dimensional approach to things, trying to extract petty soundbites and generally harassing everyone you come across. Chill the fuck out, Paxo - oh and regarding this video - learn about the UK constitution and models of democracy perhaps? Oh wait, you're too busy being rude to your microwave...
@sqr73 He gets paid to take a one dimensional aproach The MSM is just a joke, people are flocking to the alternative media in their droves I predict that pretty soon Paxo and chums will be talking to themselvesLOL
Unbelievable........Who the %*&# is Jeremy Paxman to that rude to neighbouring nation's Head of State? It's one thing to disagree....it's another thing to be a pretentious arsehole.
I'm just waiting for the day when the Irish people get off their ass and do the same as the Icelandic people. Kick out their corrupt government, tell the IMF and World Bank to fuck off and take our Republic back. It warmed my heart to see the Icelandic people win their war against the bankers.
Resist membership of the EU with every ounce of strength you have Iceland. It is a disaster and will only get worse. Its a trap.
The revolution is going global very soon. In solidarity from Ireland. Peace.
@bjarktron. Good point - but it is important to understand the way banks work. They can only operate with the financial backing of their government. Effectively the government of any modern economy underwrites the borrowings of the banks within its economy. Thats why even us in the UK are having to support our own banks here because of the serious money the banks borrowed and invested in loans that wont be paid back.
The British people lent millions to Icelandic banks. Fact. Obviously the Icelandic people don't want to pay it back. As the president said, they are highly democratic with a 90% turnout at elections, therefore one must assume that they have supported their government's actions over the last 10 years. Now they have been asked to pay back the money - they are not happy about it, and they want to vote not to pay it back. Paxman performed excellently in the face of a blustering president.
@safetylastmusic Loaning money is a big risk and they should know it. The banks got the loan and not us, the people of Iceland. So why should we pay the money back? The banks weren't linked with the government.
@safetylastmusic Loaning money is a big risk and they should know it. The banks got the loan and not us, the people of Iceland. So why should we pay the money back? The banks weren't linked with the government.
Jeremy Paxman is a complete dick! Fuck IMF, EU, banksters and the rest of the tyrants! Stay strong people of Iceland. Someday the rest of the world will look up to you and see you as a country which puts the peoples rights and quality of life before the will of the banksters. Truly an inspirational country.
ICESAVE was a private banking operation trading on the good name of Iceland. All of Iceland's banks were privatized and then used to launder money for the Russian MOB. Bankers who make incredible risks with the funds of their depositors should be allowed to fail if their boneheaded decisions cause the bank to fail. Those in charge should be held accountable not the people of Iceland. Iceland shouldn't pay a penny to any of the depositors of ICESAVE. I wish we had that sort of backbone in the US.
Paxman may appear to have lost the argument due to the incredible amount of bull shit flying out of the the President's mouth, the President of pretty much a non-country, but the content that sounds more convincing is that of Paxman.
The president failed entirely to answer the questions directly, and may well have got away with billions and billions towards a country that non-one in the entire European Union cares about. Especially now the Icelandic government is made of thieves.
Did I miss something? Where was the cutting down to size there? Just Paxman asking the questions we're all wondering about and the President bouncing them back with spin and rhetoric...
im irish...our government didnt have the balls to do the same as iceland mainly because they are up to their necks in it themselves..WELL DONE ICELAND
Good luck to them. If you hide your cash in a country with dodgy banking you are taking a risk. I know a lot of people would have been advised to do this by bankers and for them I feel sorry. They were led astray. However your average Icelander has done nothing wrong. Why should they pay? It's nice to see a country where they have real actual democracy. Almost something of legend at this stage.
paxman is not used to dealing with this level of honesty from a politician and so looks to have very poor character in the way he puts forward his questions.
However, what the BBC failed to mention was the number of lucrative contracts won by American Corps to build key port installations, a new telecom infrastructure to take advantage of Iceland's unique geothermal resources for data centres of the future. All the big US Data Magnates are involved - paid for from loans made by American Corps banking system.
This report feels like a BBC press release for endorsing what Chossudovsky called'The Globalization of Poverty' by stealth and double dealing
@graceygrumble Here is a question for you: What does 'democracy' mean?
And what would you have done if you were in our shoes? Would you like to bankrupt your home country because of a few greedy bankers and executives? This is not about Iceland vs. the U.K. this is about the common tax-payer vs. the economic elite.
@mellowNdark how ignorant can a man be,i didnt screw anyone over, im a 16 year old still in school. However i private bank that happens to have it HQ in my country crashes becouse of failed Keyenism and you goverment wants me to pay the bill of a private organizeation, the people who put there money into those accounts did that at there own risk in the hope of higher interest. I however did not put my money into those account, why should i pay? You should think about who should really be ashamed
@mellowNdark haha its funny how people turn to spelling when they know that they have lost an argument. English is my second language, i also study a third and next year a forth. The fact that happen has two p's doesn´t contribute to your argument at all and shows how pathatic it is.
If he iceland is such a super democratic nation then why was there no referendum at the time the deal was made, but only when it was time to pay ? disingenuous fart.
@Yous111111 Because, at the time, people (all over the world) had no idea how bad this could go. That's why nobody protested. And don't blame the population of an entire nation because of what a selected few did.
Right now there is british private company called BP causing pollution in Amercia. Say for example BP goes bust, all the owners take out their money, move to Miami and live like kings. UK taxpayers are left with a bill of approx 20-25000 pounds becouse of the actions of a private company. There are two things all the Icelandic bankers have in common, they have Icelandic passports and they live in London. So the money is london FACT
"There is no sovereign guarantee on the depositor's scheme according to the EU directive says Alain Lipietz who chaired the Finance Committee of the Parliament of Europe which wrote the directive. It is very clear in the directive that it is the responsibility of the host country to make the bank participate in the local host state depositor scheme if the home scheme doesn't have sufficient funds.
@philbo1965uk The only thief in this situation was the British Government. Why were councils across the land keeping council tax revenue in these 'high yield-high risk' accounts?
Why did they have excess tax revenue and yet continue to raise taxes? If there's an excess, the taxes should be lowered.
And what was happening to the interest off these accounts? None of it was being reinvested in to the UK economy or put in the treasury. Someone was creaming off the profits - someone high up.
Respond to this video... If i was Icelandic I wouldn't be posting comments..I'd be shamed into silence.Your government tried to steal millions of British savers money.Thats dispicable....Shame on your cuntrey and its people allowing it to happen.
I don' t think this guy outclassed Jeremy Paxman. He just continued to talk drivel and hide behind the guise of being ULTRA-democratic about agreements which are not up to a countries population to decide. ICELAND and ONLY ICELAND got itself into the mess it's in and OTHER COUNTRIES bailed it out! NOW you want to ask the people whether they should pay that money back!!?? WTF do you think they will say!? It's not up to the citizens! PAY YOUR DEBTS!!! fucking europeans
@spatialdude Get off your high horse. What does 'democracy' mean? And who were supposed to keep an eye on international transactions made by Icelandic investors? That's right, the financial advisors in Iceland AND in the 'other' countries.
The knife cuts both ways.
And just so you know it, people here aren't very excited about bankrupting their country just because of the idiotic movements made by the economic elite.
I wouldn't say the Prime Minister cut Paxman down exactly but i thought he conducted himself very well, he didn't rise to the bait put it that way! Good luck Iceland hope you manage to drag yourself out of this mess (and the UK too!).
Iceland has no legal responsibility to pay any of this money according to EU law. That is why the British were so adament that this not go to a court of law.
Here are some informative videos that explain the situation.

@ChangingThe When do we fuck the world over? (don't say empire that was 60 years ago and we didn't o as much fucking over as you might think) When do we complain like little bitches do you know what don't bother your just an idiot I guess.
@ChangingThe well the empire is over and we never invaded countries and brought back there gold per se. Firstly the zulu's have very little use for gold anyway.
The worlds not as simple as you think it is, its not just gooodies vs badies but I wouldn't expect someone with such a simple world view to understand that
@maggziie01 intellect? you showed your intellect by that statement. my point was that someone claims to know my entire world view after hearing only a few words from me. read between the lines sweetheart. you really are a distasteful bunch of people.
@MrGilles1990 errr it's not the truth, there are not more EU flags in Britain than British flags. Don't make up shit in your head and then believe it. If you're going to complain about something it should be about the immigration status of the country, that's the real worry.
@MrGilles1990 are you stupid or something? where the fuck are you seeing all these EU flags in britain? How can you possibly claim there are more EU flags in Britain than British flags? Stop talking shit. And no I don't like the EU because it hasn't done Britain any good so far and I don't want the Euro in this country. But stop talking shit about there being more EU flags in Britain. it's not true so stop being a twat.
@James09854 Well Wen i try to fly a British flag i am branded a racist but when componies fly the British flag by law they have to fly the EU flag with it
what they owe they must pay back, i do not see why he felt he had to ask permision from his people. to me he was just trying to get out of paying it back.
*slow clap* Shows that Paxman is powerless when interviewees actually ANSWER his questions :) (I love Paxman's attitude btw; just that he's human too and can be wrong sometimes)
@Starsandfunk I was just wondering that. I think that because Grimsson wasn't cut down to size by Paxman - which is what usually happens - people think that he must have cut Paxman down to size.
Moust of the country is now awakening how the economy is working. Its run by theives and unfair trading.
And we will not have any business with the IMF, we will not be robbed of our fucking resourses. We are a neutral country but we are beeing treated like fuckin shit. Only under 40 people brought iceland down to its knees. Just wait when the american bubble bursts that will be ugly.
@1Fidelis We have mother nature and the spirits on our side=D Funny thing the volcanic ash hasn't stopped air travel in Iceland! (except for flights to closed airspaces abroad ofcourse...) And we have more coming to put you Brit's in your place=D muhahahhhahaha!!!!!
jeremy paxman is an arsehole - agreed... but iceland have to pay up... the rest of europe's financial institutions are having to take similar action after the meltdown, why should iceland be any different...? just because their economy is so badly out of control...? no...
@cradleknife Maybe because there are no laws saying that the government of Iceland has to pay it? Those weren't Icelandic bank accounts, they were accounts in companies which were placed in Uk/Netherlands, under the supervision of the governments there who failed at seeing what was coming.
If anything the Uk should be pay Iceland. Gordon Brown made irresponsible comments and used the terrorict act law against us which made the crash bigger here.
@GottOgGaman Accounts may have happened to be held by British/Dutch, but that's irrelevant. Those Icelandic banks were taking British/Dutch money into the accounts in the trust that they guarantee to look after it and repay it when required, with interest - the promise that every single bank makes. If that Icelandic bank fails to uphold that basic banking pledge then the responsibility falls firstly onto its own government, not Britain's. Do you not agree?
@GottOgGaman Here's why Iceland is accountable: Even though they were foreign accounts it was still money going into Iceland's own economy, not Britain's (our companies if anything were helping your economy by having accounts in your banks!). If your bank looks after somebody's money then you should pay it back when required, if you take a loan out to bail out your banks, then you should pay it back.
If this was the other way around, Britain would have the honour to do the right thing.
@StraitKnopfler While I wholeheartedly agree with you, here's the difference: The banks took loans which equaled more than 10x that of the countries GDP. Even if we decided to pay back, it would take literally centuries!
I, as a tax-payer, don't want to watch my money being used in bailing out privately owned banks which made all the wrong decisions, there is no justice in that.
"Don't trust an Icelander"a bit racist isn't it Jeremy? You better be careful you will lose your job for comments like this.

Why should UK and Dutch citizens - let alone Icelanders - bail these dumb fucks out?
tigranvartanovitch 9 months ago 6
@tigranvartanovitch Well, the prelude to "don't trust an Icelander" is that decisions made in Iceland are entirely democratic, so therefore does it not make sense that the actions of Iceland really are by the Icelandic persons themselves?
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone So what you are saying is that if any Icelander commits a murder, then the whole population goes to prison for life? Or, had they the death penalty, then they would all be executed? What sense does that make?
tigranvartanovitch 9 months ago
@tigranvartanovitch No, I'm saying if one Icelander commits a murder and the whole population democratically votes for that Icelander to be put to death then they should be responsible for the decision, and you would consider the average Icelander to be someone who supports the death penalty.
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
@ChristopherDone Oh, I see. Well, they've just voted to tell the British and the Dutch to go to hell. The Brits are already threatening to take them to [which?] court. Funny how the Brits act tough in the face of a democratic decision. But if only one man [like Vladimir Putin] told them to go to hell, they'd go there in a shot.
tigranvartanovitch 9 months ago
@tigranvartanovitch Coming back to concrete terms, Britain does not have a real democracy. Decisions are made by fiat. We go to war when the leaders want to go to war despite general opposition from the general public, protests, etc. No vote taken. Now, if Iceland is so democratic, and if they democratically voted on this decision going against their promise as they say, then it's reasonable for the general public to be held responsible and therefore "don't trust an Icelander".
ChristopherDone 9 months ago
External to the issues at hand, does anyone else find Paxman's interviewing style to be deeply unpleasant? I don't think you gain anything from taking a one-dimensional approach to things, trying to extract petty soundbites and generally harassing everyone you come across. @bjarktron. Good point - but it is important to understand the way banks work. They can only operate with the financial backing of their government. Effectively the government of any modern economy underwrites the borrowings of the banks within its economy. Thats why even us in the UK are having to support our own banks here because of the serious money the banks borrowed and invested in loans that wont be paid back.
monkeygumgum 11 months ago
The British people lent millions to Icelandic banks. Fact. Obviously the Icelandic people don't want to pay it back. As the president said, they are highly democratic with a 90% turnout at elections, therefore one must assume that they have supported their government's actions over the last 10 years. Now they have been asked to pay back the money - they are not happy about it, and they want to vote not to pay it back. Paxman performed excellently in the face of a blustering president.

I wish we had that sort of backbone in the US.
agamemnon960 1 year ago
Paxman may appear to have lost the argument due to the incredible amount of bull shit flying out of the the President's mouth, the President of pretty much a non-country, but the content that sounds more convincing is that of Paxman.
The president failed entirely to answer the questions directly, and may well have got away with billions and billions towards a country that non-one in the entire European Union cares about. Especially now the Icelandic government is made of thieves.

UK taxpayers are left with a bill of approx 20-25000 pounds becouse of the actions of a private company. There are two things all the Icelandic bankers have in common, they have Icelandic passports and they live in London. So the money is london FACT

Someone was creaming off the profits - someone high up.

cradleknife 1 year ago
@cradleknife Maybe because there are no laws saying that the government of Iceland has to pay it? Those weren't Icelandic bank accounts, they were accounts in companies which were placed in Uk/Netherlands, under the supervision of the governments there who failed at seeing what was coming.
If anything the Uk should be pay Iceland. Gordon Brown made irresponsible comments and used the terrorict act law against us which made the crash bigger here.
GottOgGaman 1 year ago
@GottOgGaman Accounts may have happened to be held by British/Dutch, but that's irrelevant. Those Icelandic banks were taking British/Dutch money into the accounts in the trust that they guarantee to look after it and repay it when required, with interest - the promise that every single bank makes. If that Icelandic bank fails to uphold that basic banking pledge then the responsibility falls firstly onto its own government, not Britain's. Do you not agree?
StraitKnopfler 1 year ago
@GottOgGaman Here's why Iceland is accountable: Even though they were foreign accounts it was still money going into Iceland's own economy, not Britain's (our companies if anything were helping your economy by having accounts in your banks!). If your bank looks after somebody's money then you should pay it back when required, if you take a loan out to bail out your banks, then you should pay it back.
If this was the other way around, Britain would have the honour to do the right thing.
StraitKnopfler 1 year ago
@StraitKnopfler While I wholeheartedly agree with you, here's the difference: The banks took loans which equaled more than 10x that of the countries GDP. Even if we decided to pay back, it would take literally centuries!
I, as a tax-payer, don't want to watch my money being used in bailing out privately owned banks which made all the wrong decisions, there is no justice in that.
