I am rediscovering all this great stuff by REM I listened to when I was in high school. Murmur is just a brilliant album. God, these guys were talented....
REM was at their best before they went commercial. I listened to them constantly!!! Their first few albums were their best, imho; and after Green, I just didn't like them as much But kudos to them for lasting so long in the business...truly a GREAT band.
and his approach to singing these songs was better, you hear more of his voice and less of his...how do I say 'prissy whine' without offending anyone...hmmm, dunno so oh well.
Any debut album that has "Pilgrimage", "Talk About the Passion", "Radio Free Europe", "Moral Kiosk", and this haunting little masterpiece has got to be one of the greatest!
@longlakeshore don't even talk to me about it! Feels as fresh and immediate as the first time I heard it. Takes me back! And makes me marvel that I ever even was that person who danced to this barefoot in the grass, and how does that person live on in me still?
anyone who loves great classic rock.. i would suggest downloading or purchasing this album.. there is not a single mediocre song on it.. AMAZING CD... 1983.. even before I was born.. Incredible music..
@silverchair1979 This isn't classic rock buddy, this is alternative rock. Get it right, the movement behind this music was all about denying the frivolous nature of classic rock (which isn't to say that classic rock didn't produce some amazing music early on, but theatrical rock got old).
However I agree, this is an amazing album and R.E.M. is a great band.
what is up with that bassline? Damn, this is ethereal.
Mike might underscore this now and even years ago but this is some heavy dope for sure

Magical, poignant, catharthic- I played this song over and over and over when I heard it first, and it never ever loses its effect. Perfection.

Murmur's only real competition for greatest album ever is Automatic for the People. I will miss REM, favorite band for 17 years.
