  • i saw this tutorial a couple days ago, went out to find rats, and found none. since i didn't want to make my own, i ended up getting a chignon foundation. i cut it in two, and voila! with a little hair spray to sticky up my hair, i now can say i have victory rolls! thanks so much for this tutorial! i know this will drive my boyfriend wild!

  • hi, where do you get the hair 'rats' from? i live in the UK and can't seem to find them anywhere?! :( help

  • Boots online seems to have them - they call them Roly Polies!

  • Thank you for this fantastic tutorial!

Just what I need to add a little more flair to my look.

    Cheers!

  • you do suit FRINGES

  • Hahaha 9:08

  • Boogie woogie bugle boy from company b!!! omg I love that song. my mom used to sing it to me when I was little.

  • Wow! I absoloutly adore you, miss. Very classy, indeed. <3

  • you're my new favorite person. officially.

  • Thank you so much for such an easily duplicated tutorial! I went to a 1940s themed event today. I received sooo many compliments and appreciated the advice this morning. I could have been frustrated, but instead -- I was beautiful!

  • you are awesome lady! great voice! and you are very entertaining!

  • thats amazing!!!

  • Great voice too!!

  • i'd love to get this look... my hair is very short tho... only an inch below my ears... whatdo you suggest for 1940's pin up looks for me >?? ( i am growing it )

  • This was an amazing tutorial! Thank you so much for helping those of us who are completely hopeless with our hair. I was also wondering where I'd purchase these rolls, particularly online as I live in Canada and we don't have all the same stores.

  • Great video Amanda! Best one I've seen on Youtube showing how to do Victory Rolls!

1 question though, which store did you buy the sponge/net rolls from? Thanks x

  • woww i loved those looks

i´ve got super long hair (1,20m)

and never know how to make this kind of 40's looks

but the sponges are a very good idea

if i´m able to make it i´ll upload a vid

    thanks!!!

  • I Love your accent!..

Thanks So much for this video I never knew they used those foam things.. Im subbing you thanks alot.. Hope they have those ingredients in Ireland!..

  • They do. :)

If you go into town there's a few places on Henry St. and O'Connell St. that have them. I'd try Marks & Spencer first. Also if you've ever been to the vintage store in town, I think it's called 'Old Times' or something like that. If you don't live near Dublin I couldn't tell you where to get any- I don't live near Dublin at all but a trip there is definitely worth it if you're picking up vintage stuff. Good luck! :)

  • this video was awesome!

every pin up video I watched never mentioned using foam...its so much easier!

you're so personable & I enjoyed watching this vid :D

    thanks!

  • I love these looks! Ive only just recently started getting into vintage fashion and these tutorials are brilliant and very easy to follow. You look fabulous with these hairstyles too. Thankyou for the help :o) xxx

  • The 40's hairstyles are so beautiful! Great job!

  • great tutorial!! i have more or less the same hair length, but less (highly less) quantity of hair, do you think it will work? i live in spain, where can i find the sponges (they look great), at a professional hairdressers shop? (sorry about my english) thank you!! you're so cute

  • Hi there and thank you for the comment. Where in Spain do you live? I once got them at the Cortes Inglese (sp?) dept store in Barcelona, but of course, there' s always the internet. And yes! Those professional hairdresser shops should also carry them. Your English is GREAT, by the way! xxx

  • hi! i live in Bilbao (north of spain) and we have corte ingles here too, i will try there!! thanks a lot for answering!!! you're lovely!! kisses

  • my hair sucks and i cant do anything with it

  • Have you tried this hairdo? Listen, my hair sucks, too. Truly. Is your long enough to at least pull back into a ponytail (or even half a ponytail, with the top part of the hair pulled into it). If so, do what I do (another person with hair that sucks). Every day for work, I pull my hair into a pony tail and just stick a hairpiece on it! I've got a ton of them. Some are on banana clips that I just clip on to the ponytail/back of the hair. Some are on combs. LIFE SAVERS! xxx

  • your too adorable! lol ! thanks for the tips hun

  • Thank you so much! xx

  • this is amazing dear :)

    thanks a lot!

  • Thanks so much fort your comment. :) xx

  • Wow, it's easier than I thought....

    Thaks!

  • One of the easiest styles ever, isn't it! Thanks for your comment. :) xx

  • You're the spitting image of Ginger Rogers. :-)

  • Wow. Now THAT'S a lovely compliment to wake up to! Thanks so much! (Now I just need to find a Fred Astaire who isn't a loser). xx

  • you rock!

  • THANK YOU! xxx

  • you are so cute! Awesome hair styling tutorial :]

  • Thank you so much! xx

  • this is one of the best ways i have seen to do this. i have very thin hair and i have only seen tutorial with out the sponges. this way my hair wont go flat!! thanks!!

  • I have thin hair too (as you can see!) and these rolls are a life-saver! Thank you for your comment. xxx

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!

  • I'm so glad! xxx

  • Thank u so much i love this :D it actually helped alot, and luckly i have some roll sponges :D LOL :D

  • thanks for the video! btw, this style is very flattering on you!

  • Wow you made this really easy and simple. I am a wash and wear gal, but I think I can do this.

  • slut!

  • yeah...but what about the Victory Roll technique, MrGunzii, and the clever use of the sponges to achieve a complicated retro hair style in under five minutes?

  • Thank you, you rock this tutorial!

  • Thanks! xx

  • you are awsome!!!! the queen of totorial!

  • Ha ha! Thanks so much!!! xxx

  • what was the name of the spongy rollers if i might ask again?

  • They're called 'up-do sponges' on the packet, but I'm guessing they're called by all sorts of different names.

  • haircare AND history? i think i love you.

  • Ha! Thanks so much! (I'm a history teacher by trade, so I just can't help myself! I've got History Turrets Syndrome!)

  • Oh my gosh - thank you so much! It's one of the best (and most realistic :) tutorials! I'm running out to Ricky's tomorrow to buy some rats!

  • I'm glad you like it! Have fun at Ricky's (one of my fave stores in NYC!)

  • That's so cool!

  • Thanks!

  • I've tried this and it works perfectly! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!

  • I'm so glad it worked out! :)

  • you are so informed.

    i adore it!

    :D

thank you for teaching me so much. :]

  • Thank you so much for your lovely comment! xx

  • You look fabulous

  • Thank you so much! What a lovely thing to say :)

  • my hair is a bit shorter and has layers... is it possible to still do this?

  • Absolutely! I recently got a 'bad haircut' (WAY too many layers, and all over the place), but the Victory Roll technique worked just as well, so....phew!

  • Is there someplace special I could get those sponges or nets? I went to the local beauty store and they had no idea what I was even talking about.

  • Mmmm. I dunno, really. I get mine from Ricky's NYC (a chain in New York). But you can also try Ebay. On failing that, just use the sponge part of those sponge-and-plastic clip rollers. They work just as well. Hope this helps. :)

  • My great g'ma gave me the greatest cheat for those:) feet of nylons stuffed with either tissue or for that disguised look, use hair after you trim or cut it. you can manipulate it any way you like. it works well for me (i'm a professional swing dancer so i do it a lot lol) Or to structure it better, cut a toilet paper roll and roll it smaller, then placing it in the nylons. The nylons allow you to push pins throught it. you can't use the jagged pins for more than styling:) good luck!

  • FANTASTIC ideas (and authentically retro!)

  • I bought the sponges at a dollar store! They don't come empty, they have that plastic clippy thing attached but it's so easy to remove.

  • I think those are for curling the hair, but that's exactly what I use when I lose my other sponges (but I take the plastic clip bit off first, of course!)

  • Yes, those are The Andrews Sisters in the background. Thanks so much for your comment! x

  • first time i saw your vid and i almost LOVE you!! this was amazing, you looked beautiful and i loved how you sing!

  • THANK YOU, Basilikaum. What a lovely comment! xxx

  • I <3 your bathroom!

  • I did, too! Sadly, I've since moved house...and lost the rockin', retro bathroom (sob!)

  • just superb. Thanks!

  • Thank you!

  • thank you this helps soo much :) x

  • I'm so glad you found it helpful! x

  • in UNDER *stomp* five minutes!

    HAHA

    love you woman

    great how to! :]

  • Ha ha! THANK YOU for your lovely comment! xx

  • with the first style, what if you have bangs already?

  • Then just go with your REAL bangs and roll up the sides (and the back, too, if you'd like to). This hairdo is even easier if you already have bangs!

  • wonderful!

  • Thank you!

  • yay!!!! thank you sooo much, i love it, i'm going out to buy the rollers now! thanks thanks thanks :)

  • Oh my lord :o i love you

  • this was amazing!!! and funny ...all in 5 mins hahaha :D

  • I love you so much, this is awesome.

  • awesome!

  • This is amazing! I've done pin curls/victory rolls in the past but it took me way too long. You look stunning!!!

  • This is the Best Video I have watched on youtube. You are just Adorable. You make 40's hair so Simple! I love it!!! Thank you.

  • Oh I love this, you are a complete legend.

Now I know what to do with my prom hair after prom.

  • i love you so much . you have solved all my 1940 hair rolling and styling problems !

    brava !!

  • YOUR SO CUTE! I LOVE THE HAIR (:

  • you're wonderful.

    these hairdoes are adorable.

    I'm so fascinated haha :D

  • when you rolled the back, i thought it looked REALLLLY good!! =D

  • do you have any 1940s styles for long yet curly ethnic hair?

i could always straighten my hair to do the styles---but do you know any vintage hairstyles for curly, sort of think long hair?

  • Yes! THIS hairdo! You don't need to straighten your hair for it at all. Just wrap your hair as it is around the foam rolls (they don't have to be 'smooth and straight'; they can be kinky/curly too) and just leave the back down and curly, OR, but it into a 'snood' (decorative 1940s hairnet - available on Ebay for about five bucks). This works BEAUTIFULLY with long, curly, ethnic hair; in fact, it will be easier for you to do it than for us chicks with short, thin, straight hair!

  • You are adorable! Thank you for the tutorial! *

  • You're very welcome, and thank you for your lovely comment. :) xx

  • It's the quick and easy way! xxx

  • love the video! you're so professional. do you have advice for long hair?

  • Long hair is lush! Why not roll the front into the Victory Rolls, and then put the back of your hair into a 'snood' (1940s hair nets; very pretty; buy 'em on Ebay for about five bucks).

    I envy your long hair!

  • she's awesome

  • Thank you!

  • This is awesome! I may actually be able to do this! Thanks a lot for the video.

  • Let me know if it works out. :)

  • You should do sales with the 5 minute thing. LOL... great sales technique. If you were selling something, i'd buy it, just because of the repetitive *foot stomp* *drag foot* *hand wave* "5 minutes"...lol

  • Ha ha! Thanks so much!

  • I think she uses American words becasue these hairstyles come from the 40s in American... where is Betty page from...? America... and this video is so mega awsome, dollface! ;-)

  • Thanks so much! xx

  • Great video!!!!

  • Thanks so much! :)

  • great video-

    but you sound english -

why do you use american words?

  • I'm America, but grew up in England (hence accent) and made this video when I was living in France....so you can see why I get confused sometimes. ;) Thanks for your comment. :)
