  • Does anybody know where I can find Yusuf's track where he praises the Kings of Lagos??

I have answered your question on the Youtube email.A good drummer is a good drummer.Remember that we are taking about talking drums the style and drum can be changed. This may be a little bit more difficult with drums with beat only.

  • Okuboro

The new group collapsed because Kasumu Isola refused to beat the drum.He said that he finished with drumming when Yusuf died.Ayinla Omowura begged him to come and beat the drum for him but the master drummer said it was over.I think he felt Ayinla has not got the experience of Yusuf and abundant patience.I remember that Yusuf never criticised people who were lagging behind in his group.

  • @onikoloboegba Yusuf Olatunji died in 1976 while Ayinla Omowura died in 1980 and they both played different genres of Yoruba music: Sakara and Apala respectively. There was no way Ayinla Omowura could have approached Kasunmu Isola to be his lead drummer. At the point in time, Ayinla lead drummer was Adewole "Onilu ola".; one of the best in the trade. The point I am trying to make is that there was no reason for Ayiila Omowura to invite Kasunmu Isola to join his band,

  • @ilumode Yusuf died in 1979 at the age of 70, and not 1976. I agree with your claim that Ayinla Omowura could not have invited Kasumu Isola to Join his group. It was just one year between the death of both Ayinla and Yusuf. Kasumu Ishola and Yusuf himself were like mates as they belonged to many social clubs together. Yusuf refferred to Kasumu as Ore mi in most of his records. Ayinla was born in 1935 and died at the age of 45.

  • @Okuboro Thanks. I goofed about Baba Legba passing in 1976. However, that he passed in 1979 may not be it. I have it on good authority that he passed in 1978. Let's investigate this further, guys. That Ayinla Omowura was born in 1935 is subject to debate. His date of birth was never recorded. Even the giant EMI recording company was not emphatic; he was said to have been born in the late 30's. Let's keep digging.

  • @ilumode

I would add S Abeni to that list. It is true Yusuf and Kasumu had huge respect for each other. They were 2 professionals who respected each other. No i am the boss and you have to listen to me.Being in the same clubs solidified the respect and frienship and working relationship.Anyway Yusuf needed Kasumu to ensure that he did not sing fast or too slow.Listen to the beat of the drum that is Kasumu all through and this could continue for an hour not easy.

  • @ilumode

Ayinla was 47 years when he died.

  • @onikoloboegba ....That would be an educated guess. His date of birth was never recorded.

  • @ilumode You could be right on yusuf i.e 1978. But on Ayinla Omowura, when he died in 1980, the newspaper i read said he was 45, that means he was born in 1935, unless the newspaper was wrong.

  • @ilumode

Yes he did approach Kasumu.A lot of things prevented it.The legendary anger and constant fights of Ayinla, age of Kasumu he was older than Ayinla by over 20 years,Ayinla had fought all the people who worked for him including a teenage boy (elegbe) for minor things really.Yusuf had a song that said (ko to si iru wa lati sun ... fun eniyan yepere) .Anyway Bolodeoku the man who used to give Odu to both Ayinla and Yusuf had died.So kasumu felt that there was not much anymore.

  • @onikoloboegba A npe won lomo eran, won nhuwa omo eshin, a npe won lomo eshin won nhuwa omo garawa (2times) awon eyan yepere. Ko to siru wa lati sujaja feniyan yepere was not directed at Ayinla. S aka who was an arch rival of Baba Legba was warned in that record. The relationship between Ayinla and Yusuf was that of a father and son.

  • @Okuboro

To shed light on Yusuf and Ayinla having cordial relations is only true sometimes.Ayinla always thought that Yusuf would leave Abeokuta and permanently live in Lagos. He to the suprise of Egbas sometimes call Yusuf 'asawo' meaning settler not born in Abeokuta. But Yusuf was tied to Alake and all High Chiefs in Abeokuta. So it was necessary to just ignore Ayinla.Anyway he had the title Baba Legba already.

  • @Okuboro

Anyway Yusuf was in his 60s before he died.At various times he had said that after his death Ayinla would have the whole of the music scene to himself as there is noone around to rival Ayinla with depth of knowledge, odu and excellent arrangement of words. Also very important his lead drummer always got it right. Now the only LP that sekere played a bhig part for Ayinla is when Adewole was not there.See why Kasumu could not play for him.

  • More of his (Baba Legba) sakara music pls. His music is what i knew from my primary school days, Young and old folks in Isale-Eko & Ibadan enjoy is music a lot, apart from Late Abibu Oluwa, others (Sakara Musicians) were behind him(Yusuf). May his soul R.I.P.

  • @omoolubiyo Shonibare and Abibu Oluwa were Yusuf Olatunji's bosses in Lagos.Shonibare helped Yusuf a lot bringing new style and perfecting his style.LatiLasumbo is another great helper. Then Kasumu Ishola the great drummer as acknowledged by all including Yusuf Olatunji. Those were great days.

  • @onikoloboegba Thanx for the Insights.Appreciated.He was a Trail blazer.The first indigenous live band i watched.1972 @ Ake palace square during Lipede's coronation.Like yesterday.

  • Which musician in Nigeria dead or alive can sing better than this Baba Legba.( S ABENI OMO SHONIBARE) I guess is from Lagos. Lati Lasunbo is another big fan that Baba Legba mentioned in most of his records. We do not know if any of this late music legend' son or old band member bother to continue his good work.

  • Thank you for posting this track and others. Yusuf Olatunji did not sing praise of anyone more than Sonibare Tesileem Abeni (S. Abeni), may God be with all of them.

  • This is just great. Thank you EgbaAlake for all these beautiful songs. I also just listened to Hubert Ogunde. Thank you sooo much. You just brought back the good music of my youth. God bless.

  • Baba legba deserved every year ever green award

  • I surely agree with you talk of music in Nigeria Baba legba Yusuf will never be forgoten big respect to him may his soul rest in peace from Kabir Olayide Mohammad Dublin Republic of Ireland

  • Thanx for the response. Will dig in and keep u posted. There is Shonibare Building along Abiola Way in Abeokuta though.Could be for a relation.

Watch out for more Baba 'Legba.
