Since the spirit bomb is the bane of all evil that is why he needed to use it to defeat kid buu. To be honest buu's strongest form was Super Buu Gohan absorbed.

Kid buu is one of the weakest forms of buu dude. even fat buu is arguably stronger (not to be confused with mr buu, who is in fact the weakest). Goku said himself he had no chance whatsoever against super buu, who Gohan easily beat. in the manga, when super buu regresses into kid buu, Vegeta clearly states "his ki is much lower now, we may be able to beat him".

Anyway, Well, you need Goku(End) to be able to go Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2 AND Super Saiyan 3, but for Super Saiyan 4 you need Goku(GT), Goku(GT) Can only go Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan 5. this proves that DRAGON BALL HAS NO FUCKING LOGIC! 9 by 10 of the episodes, heroes get their asses kicked.
