The name "deltic" refers to the name given by Napiers to the engine type. the cylinder bank cross section resembles the greek letter Delta. or an upside down triangle if you like. nothing to do with diesel electric.
Awesome . I was born and still live near the Vulcan foundry where the Deltics were born . and just as they were scrapped they put them on the Liverpool Manchester run .. ( called at Earlestown at 18:00 ) ..I did see them at York many times too :) .
Sorry to some of the responders but DELTIC refers to the upside-down triangle arrangement of the Napier diesel engine. It has pairs of opposed-piston cylinders arranged with one horizontally at the top and two either side pointing downwards with a crankshaft at each 'point' of the triangle. The letter Delta in the Greek alphabet being a triangluar shape. Its a fantastic design really. Look on Wikipedia for a diagram that makes more sense than a description!
I use to watch them and the class 37's leave Grantham station's platform 1, heading for London. You could feel theplatform vibrate as they put the power on to leave. It always felt like the old goods shed joined to the platform would shake apart. It was just fantastic. I'm in my 50's now, but can close my eyes and hear and see them so clearly.
Why so slow a Deltic hauled service train of the 1970/80s would have been half way to Darlington by now.Still it's very good to see and hear this brilliant Locomotive back on the main line and at one of it's historic destinations.Great Stuff.
As stated in a few comments. Gentle handling of 55022 is the order to get her to pull away soundly. Slowly applying power stop overloading and wheel slip. Full power is only added when a decent speed has been reached. I love working on her
@magicmaybach Depends on for whom. SP and Rio Grande tried them back when, for a bit. Just don't stand up to mainline freight abuse, in USofA conditions.
For 'nother poster, "deltic" has to do with 3-crankshaft opposed-piston engine- cylinders arranged in shape of greek letter "delta:"
yep, nowt wrong with showing off, sounds great etc, but the driver doesnt get the bill for screwing the bollocks out of the engines does he!!! if he did he might be a touch more careful with them....
Rode these beasts as a 13 year old during the school holidays on a Northumbrian Ranger week ticket. Will remember always the unique sound of those engines as the driver stretched her legs from Newcastle down to York. (1980)
It could of been those happy days once more ! Excellent !
I was trying to explain Deltics to a biker and he was raving about how powerful his Ducati bike was.I said "a Deltic is THREE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED HORSEPOWER lol" Stunned silence from the biker 8-)
My father worked for British rail and took me to York Station when i was a kid - to hear a Deltic going through was absolutely awesome. The power filled every nook and cranny of that place.
The Deltic engine doesnt like full on thrash starts. Pulling away with a Deltic involves a graduall build up, ease off, power back on, then ease off, then when momentum is fast enough, full power can be applied
I remember touching a Deltic for the first time as a kid in York station and feeling awestruck. The noise, the vibrations when it was pulling out of the station were terrifieing yet exciting.
Jeees... that send shiver's up my spine, it was like going back in time to 1979. A blue deltic leaving York off that platform is just awesome... just need to see it with blue/grey stock now... top vid just for the memories.
Sweet Sweet Napier Music!!!!!

Is this diesel-electric?, or diesel-hydraulic? The way it's revving, I'd guess hydraulic.
maddennis55 2 years ago
diesel electric mate, nearly as good as an hydraulic though!

@magicmaybach diesel hydraulics never made it here in the USA. i think germany was the only one to perfect that technology.

The noise and the power used to reverberate around York station - it's a magnificent sound that stays with you for ever.....
stevefrommalton 3 years ago 23
It seems to be having quite a few problems trying to pull out! Unless they're showing off the Deltic's noise to York before moving off.
bwhugul 3 years ago
Maybe an inexperienced driver or poor railhead conditions?
lewisner 3 years ago
hi bwhugul.
could be this was a gentle start to avoid over loading the traction motors there-by causing the power units to cut out.
this happend if too much power was applied with these loco,s.
