The Hong Kong MTR system is the best there is. I have been on the London Tube, Tokyo Subway and the Singapore MRT systems and none of them even come close to what HK has. But try and fix the Melbourne system?? Tough ask. It's not just the crappy, dated infrastructure they will encounter. It's the typical Aussie "she'll be right mate" attitude that will always get in the way. In Australia we just don't have the mental ability to comprehend a functional rail system.
Iidiot fucking passengers piss me off ripping up seats, smoking, chroming and graffiting shit. We could have so much nicer things if these fucking idiots didn't fuck it up for the rest of us.
The minister is an idiot! she has no clue. the government should control the trains, instead of saying its connex'x fault, and just passing the problem to someone else.
My guess is that MTR gets or has the money required to do something called maintenance. Unfortunately the way things are run over here is that contracts are awarded on lowest price and any extra money goes into the pockets of shareholders. I for one don't expect any improvement on services.
You will be surprise that MTR is actually gets most of its money by itself, they always run a budget surplus, they know what is best to spend, and be cost efficient.
I wish them well and expect they may improve some things, but the government controls much of where the problems are, like outdated infrastructure, rolling stock and primitive facilities. Unless the government spends more money and make some smart decisions, many of the existing problems will continue.

Those old British trains (M-Stock) were refurbished in 1998 by the Australian company United Goninan, according to the Wikipedia.

Siemen and X'trapolis trains in Melb already look old after only a few years of run....
Hitachi trains have just been refurbished too but I can't tell the difference.
