@elm1230 She probably keeps her hair in protective styles that whole month. I do it, too. I keep my hair in mini plaits for a whole month and then detangle at the beginning of the next month. It works. And, I barely lose any hair. My hair isn't badly tangled/matted either. But, I would not recommend combing your hair once a month if you like to leave your hair loose. Trust me, that will be a DISASTER when you get ready to detangle it.
@CrownJewel32 Yeah I don't do protective styles. I mainly stick with twist outs. I'm just not into protective styles. Though I'm sure you hair looks amazing if you do it often. I detangle once a week or every 2 weeks. Since YES the longer you go without detangling with your hair out...UGH DISASTER is the correct word. haha
@elm1230 Protective styles aren't for everybody. I, personally, need them because if I didn't wear protective styles, I would have a lot of knots/tangles and breakage. Right now I'm wearing my hair in plaits 99% of the time until I reach BSL. But, after that, I will be wearing my hair in twistouts/braidouts/buns %50 of the time and wearing it in protective styles the other %50. And, I'll be combing once a week like you. Now, I just wear wigs until I reach bsl. I hate short hair lol.
@CrownJewel32 OH! I understand. Yeah my hair is past my shoulders. I haven't seen short hair in a while. I'm sure you know the longer the hair the more work. I have a LOT of work. But I love it. The results the fullness our hair is just amazing. It does take work but it's our hair and I'm glad people are learning to take care of it. :) have a blessed hair journey
@elm1230 Yeah, the longer my hair gets, the more work. But, like you, I love it too. I enjoy washing and detangling my hair. I actually look forward to moisturizing it, too.
love all of your videos! i had a hard time following some of the other techniques the wonderful, wonderful ladies of the natural hair community on YT put up but your hair texture is very similar to mine and i find your techniques match what my hair needs and my lifestyle (lucky me!) thanks for sharing!! great music, too!!
hi i love your hair mine is thick aswell this really helped as my dad is carribean and my mums mixed white and black and its like i cant do nothing with my hair but this has helped thanks
You have a ton of shrinkage! I wonder how you can avoid that, because you hair is pretty long yet it looks super short when you relase it. And I know that it's not just due to the fact that your hair is kinky/curly, because mine is also. I wonder if you can straighten it and then do a length check just to get an accurate measure.
Your last length check said you were only 14'' but I think you're hair is much longer than that. Mine is about 15'' and yours looks a little longer than mine!
I am currently transitioning and have just started but I washed my hair yesterday and my head was filled with single strand knots. Can you please give me advice?

Is it just me or are ppl getting upset by others asking her to straighten her hair? What's up with that? It hair and obviously she will do what she wants but this is the culture of youtube and followers. People make requests it's okay to ask for specific things. And it's okay if the vlogger doesn't want to do it but telling ppl to stop asking is censoring. People can ask whatever they want. Why is that bothering so many people? Anyone can answer, I'm just really curious.
@J4L4N I believe she said she doesn't like heat on her hair and doesn't plan on straightening it. It might have been in a video before she had to delete some but you might find it. Or it might have been a comment I've seen her write.
@WaterFor3st I never asked when or if she was planning on straightening her hair. I could care less if she does or doesn't. I was asking why ppl where getting so upset if someone DID ask if she was planning to. I was not one of those ppl.
@J4L4N I know. I'm just saying. She mentioned heat on her hair before so I don't see why people keep asking. I made a comment about it but I wasn't upset. I just thought I'd say what I wanted.
@WaterFor3st No problem. People ask because they want to know and if she didn't want comments and questions she would disable the feature. Still no cause for anyone to be upset and angry. People keep asking lots of questions but others aren't getting mad over those?
I am terribly sorry i didn't know a year ago what i know now...my hair was about 2-3 inches longer than yours and i got totally frustrated with it...and straightened it...i still like my hair, but i miss knowing that it could look as healthy as yours :( i am thinking long and hard to go back natural...it just the time and hard work that seems so daunting all over again...*sigh...anyhoos...your hair is Gorgeous!!
@amarie1322 You could still do it by transitioning in fact the time goes by so quickly that before you know it your hair will be as long as it was before.
Love your channel your tips and techniques has help me improve how I handle my hair. I agree people need to stop asking her to straighten her hair, there are other natural hair channels who does that already. She doesn’t have to straighten her hair if she doesn’t want too. Not everybody has the desire to show off their length
Straighten ur hair straighten ur hair straighten ur hair...jk But for-real guys, not everyone wants to straighten their hair. I, for one, have been natural completely for about 3 months and don't plan on straightening my hair for at least two years. The way I look at it, you don't need to straighten it to kno ur hair grew...u can stretch it and photos are a girls best friend :)
ok liked the video but i have a question hope you can help im natural been natural for about 9mos now so im stil learning but i ran into some trouble the other day with my hair and i was just woundering when you detangle befor washing and detangle while in the shower do you detangle again once out the shower? when is the best time to message your scalp? had quite some breakage that i never experience by applying the product and then detangleing again i shouldn't do that i take it
I usually leave Jamaican Black Castor Oil in my hair for 24 hours (for the full effect). Wash out by following up with my shampoo and conditioner as usual. It's completely detangled and knot-free afterwards.
Do you have another method for managing a twist out other than the scrunchie method? Because my hairs too short to do that. And also, is it a problem if i apply shea butter to my hair every night. (I do this because I retwist me hair every night and my hairs usually sweated out after practice) Thanks :)
I hate to say it but I would like to see her hair straightened myself, not because I think straight hair is better because I dont, I just want to see it straightened just to see how long it is.
@ladyhottness29 She could also just do another length check update for us. That would show you how long different sections of her hair are without her having to take the time to straighten it. Plus, anything could happen when you're talking about hot hair tools so going through the process to straighten it to see the length might actual rob her of some of what she's achieved.
hat is ur advice on texture changes? my hair used to be very thick and strong, then in college i experienced terrible heat damage and i cut the damaged ends off last year and now that my hair has just about grown back out it looks and feels different ?! what do u think about that?
AND.... i only wear my hair in twist outs and rollers but feel like I experience alot of breakage. do u think its from the twist outs??? i use Shea and aloe gel to twist it.
Girl, I need to do the finger detangling more better than what I do and I have my wide tooth comb. Also, I need to use one of those combs. Should a rat-tooth comb work?
Honestly, since you introduced me to Terressentials, detangling is a BREEZE! Detangle what?? None here :-). It's like a miracle in a bottle. I hardly have any shed hair and breakage is non existent. Thanks for the suggestion!
Wow, this was so incredibly helpful! My hair recently reached a new length and my old routine wasn't really working for me anymore. I noticed a huge difference after giving your method a try. I love you channel!! Keep up the good work chica :)
Loving your hair...Also I like the detail that you put into your presentation, I;ve watched a number of you tube hair clips but not many use terms that I would associate with someone who has had training in hair care.
i love your hair and videos!! ive been watching lots of natural videos, and so far havent seen any one with hair like mine! i LOVE my natural hair and have been natural for a year and a month now. i have some growth, but my problem is MY FRIZZY hair. i wear my hair in a puff all the time could this be my problem. i just cant get it to look right any other way. im getting so discouraged, please...any advice would be helpful. my hair is very very thick and coarse.
@emagjine did you try using oils to see if that could control the frizz. You can spray lightly with water then use the oils to see what happens. My hair too has a lot of frizz, and that's the only thing that works for me. Wish you success in your journey.
I detangle my hair just like this but I tend to have a lot of shedding. I'm glad you showed us the amount of shedding you experience. I don't feel like my hair is falling out anymore..(Smile) I have a lot of hair so people don't believe the amount of hair I shed. Thanks for posting this!
Thank goodness for this video! It truly does work! As a person with extremely tight, 4b hair, I was having difficulty detangling..... I noticed a difference as soon as I used this method! The "finger combing" FIRST and oil was really helped me comb with ease. Thank you!!!
Whit, I love every video that u post and I find them very helpful. I do have a question. I know shea butter works wonderfully for moisturizing the hair, but I can't remember if you've ever mentioned how u moisturize your scalp. How would u deal with itchy, dry scalp? What products would u use? Thanks in advance for your answer.
@lilhopie this happens to me too. My scalp gets itchy if I dont wet it every other day. @naptural85 I would like to know your answer too. I would do Olive oi for my scalp but its not long lasting.
This was so on time. I have short hair. I did a twist out over the weekend, but didn't want to wear the front that way because I am very thin on top, and it didn't look right today. So, I applied Shea Butter first, and then heat (flat iron -- haven't done that in almost a year). The Shea Butter moisturized my hair. Still feels good almost 18 hours later. I wanted to detangle my hair tonight, but didn't want to wash my hair, and I came upon this vid. Thanks for the info.
this woud be my first time commenting on any video on youtube. But I would like to say that you have inspired me so much that I tell everyone about your videos. I would like to thank you for posting videos that inspire people to take better care of there hair. And Iove hair!!! thank you, thank you, thank you:))
@chesumluv, maybe u should try a different brand and make sure its virgin or extra virgin unrefined coconut oil, also rub it together in ur hands to melt well then apply.
Seriously girls? Please stop asking her to straighten her hair. This channel is not what you want her to do with her hair. It's to help us with our hair and for inspiration. Let her do what she wants. If she wants to straighten it, and show us, then she will eventually.
@WaterFor3st Yeah. People have to realize that not everyone wants to straighten their hair. And, maybe just maybe she has a certain time, in the future, when she wants to straighten it. I know that I don't plan on straightening my hair until my birthday NEXT YEAR lol. So, that's why I said she might have a specific time.
I an ½ African American and Native so my hair is curly and straight so that equal a pain in the azz… my hair does not hold a curl but its soft I’m so ready to perm this head its no joke lol.. but I not going to it’s not worth it.
Nap I have been following you for a year now and I stop putting heat in my hair but I cheated and went to a shop and got my hair blown out... I feel so ashamed lol.. don’t get me wrong it looks good but I didn't want to put heat on my hair... but I got tired of spending so much time on it and detangling it plus I need a trim..
I wish there was a Love button! This helped a lot. I just started dry detangling my hair with my fingers because I'd been experiening short broken hairs during my wet conditioning detangling sessions. I started using just dcoconut oil on my strands and then carefully declump my hair etc. But I think I will spray just a little water to give it more give, not sopping wet so it should be fine. Oh and I had no idea you had a blog going over to follow.
@chesumluv The kind I use is Nutiva cooking oil. I take a very small amount (less than dime size) rub it in my hands and it melts. Then I rub it in my hair. I do that after I detangle and put it in braids for a braid out. That is all I do to my hair and it's great.
Thank you so much for your videos. I've been natural since Sept 2008, and am shoulder length, just discovered in May this year how bad blow drying is for my hair and how important water is. I understand that you wash your hair every month, so do you co wash or do you just moisturize your hair daily.? Just interested and learning and hoping my hair will get more length. But thank you for your help. ;0)
@onlyjaaki I'm not sure if all cooking coconut oils are the same, but look for a 100% coconut oil in a grocery store. You take a very small amount, dime size or less, rub it in your hands and it melts. It works well in my hair. I love it.
What do you do between the weeks that you don't detangle? When I wash my hair, which is at least every five days, I feel like I need to detangle, especially when trying to dry it.
Do you think you would ever where your hair down and straight? You have beautiful hair and I was just curious if you would ever flat iron it or is that too damaging?
Where did you get that fantastic comb??? It's perfect!! I use this somewhat wide toothed comb, but it still doesn't work for me and causes breakage. :(
I really love your videos. They are clearly well thought through and your delivery is brilliant, educational yet supportive. Although I do a lot of the same things you do I feel I still learn something each time I watch a video of yours. I have a two questions. Do you use seamless combs and what are your thoughts on them? The second is about hair shedding. I shed a lot of hair in my weekly wash and I have been getting really concerned at the rate of shedding. Do you have any thoughts on it?
Wow! Now that's what you call a head full of hair. I dread washing my hair, it's not long as yours, but I'm dealing with new growth roots and heat damage at the same time, but the new growth get so tangled I hate dealing with my hair after a wash. Blah. Lol
@411blah411 thats a good point i always tell myself that its a good workout for your arms taking care of really curly and kinky hair, and i always say that its God's way of keeping our arms strong and toned, we probably have much stronger arms then our straight haired, loosed waved, and relaxed hair girls lol, so its actually a positive thing in more ways than 1 to have natural curly kinky hair.
and people think im weird for not wearing fros and wash and gos...its because the detangling is so hard afterwards and i think that i lose more hair than i should. Don't get me wrong, i love the look of fros, I just HATE dealing with it afterwards, especially if you have hair thats past your shoulders. Too much. Nice vide btw
Thank you soo much for this vid. I watched this right before detangling my daughter's hair. She has VERY thick, shoulder length hair. We are in the process of growing out her texturizer. She hasn't had any chemicals in about 9 months. Needless to say, doing her hair is quite a chore. But following your routine made it so much easier! Thanks again!
LIKE*** IF U WANT TO SEE HER STRAIGHTEN HER HAIR, JUST ONE TIME!!! lol I know how u feel about not straightening your hair & putting heat to it. I have been natural since 2008 and, i have straightened my hair 3 timess!!! I am so over the str8 look, its overrated! I LOOVE MY CURLS!
You're lucky you have a nice uniform hair texture all around your head. My hair is a whole other story :( Long straight fast-growing hair in the front, poofy kinky slow-to-grow hair in the back, and frizz all over. It's so annoying!
I usually don't comment but I really wanted to thank you for making videos! I love your vids because they're to the point, simple, professional, and represent your personality. You're my fav youtuber because your hair routine is simple, low maintenance and you're not a product junkie! I'm a teen who's been natural my whole life but not a healthy natural, and you've taught me a lot and kept me motivated to be patient with my hair. You're my natural hair inspiration, keep up the good work Whit(:

Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing...

That's what I need: longer fingers. I have these RIDICULOUS baby hands. I can't do anything with them, let alone detangle my hair.

i love your hair and videos!! ive been watching lots of natural videos, and so far havent seen any one with hair like mine! i LOVE my natural hair and have been natural for a year and a month now. i have some growth, but my problem is MY FRIZZY hair. i wear my hair in a puff all the time could this be my problem. i just cant get it to look right any other way. im getting so discouraged, please...any advice would be helpful. my hair is very very thick and coarse.
emagjine 5 months ago
@emagjine did you try using oils to see if that could control the frizz. You can spray lightly with water then use the oils to see what happens. My hair too has a lot of frizz, and that's the only thing that works for me. Wish you success in your journey.

i was wondering if you trim your hair? and if you always wear a fro, is it necessary to trim?

Thanks in advance for your answer.
lilhopie 5 months ago

Seriously girls? Please stop asking her to straighten her hair. This channel is not what you want her to do with her hair. It's to help us with our hair and for inspiration. Let her do what she wants. If she wants to straighten it, and show us, then she will eventually.

@WaterFor3st True true indeed indeed
delite3014 5 months ago

I tried to use coconut oil and it makes white balls in my hair....does anyone have a solution to take of this problem?
chesumluv 5 months ago

But thank you for your help. ;0)

onlyjaaki 5 months ago
@onlyjaaki I'm not sure if all cooking coconut oils are the same, but look for a 100% coconut oil in a grocery store. You take a very small amount, dime size or less, rub it in your hands and it melts. It works well in my hair. I love it.

Misskimmy2011 5 months ago
Wow! Now that's what you call a head full of hair. I dread washing my hair, it's not long as yours, but I'm dealing with new growth roots and heat damage at the same time, but the new growth get so tangled I hate dealing with my hair after a wash. Blah. Lol
1967nita 5 months ago
