Please do not release creatures to accumulate merit. This causes more harm to the fragile ecology where they are released. A demand is also created for trapped creatures which causes more harm and killing in the process of catching these animals for sale. To be compassionate, rather STOP EATING SHARKS' FINS! These poor creatures' fins are cut off and they are left to drown in the oceans, not to say millions are killed to satisfy our appetite! Chinese/Asians are esp. responsible for this!

Just don't release invasive species and it can be done. Syncretism of religion and science is the ultimate medicine for physical science and psychological health. People feel good for what they do (since they did something ethical) because they do it very well ( with the help of science).

I truly believe that what ever you do (cause) you cannot escape the consequence (effect) no matter how hard you try. The bad karma you cause will eventually catch up with you. If you think about everthing you do in this life no matter how trivial or great they all relate to karma (the laws of cause and effect).
My take is that this sutra is not authentic. This is a Chinese creation, in my humble opinion. Wearing purple with gold belt, riding horses, wearing silk, and happy wives (more than one) don't seem like "goodies" in India that Buddha would encourage his disciples to go after.
The Buddha doesn't encourage anything. He just said all things happen to people aren't a coincidence. A rich dude doesn't born rich because he happens to born into a rich family. His past determines his future. You reap what you sow.
I don't believe that smart/intelligence and good looking have something to do with past life. Smart/intelligence is results from both nurture and hardwork, while good looking is because of genetics and DNA.
Scientific explanation and karma are not in conflict.
Everything has a cause to be.
It's right that intelligence is brought out of hardwork; the effort applied is one of the causes which lead to this quality. However, look deeply and a little further:
All the causes are not based only in this lifespan.
For instance, good appearance seems to be genetic.And it's coherent. But, what determine from which womb will we be born?
Is it luck?
There's no fire without fuel;no effect without cause.
I know what you mean. But merely believe everything that happens in this lifetime is because of karma, then it's believe without thinking. I think even Karma does happen when we are living. For example, if you did something wrong to someone, one day you will get the karma. That is plain "cause and reaction" (newton's law). If you don't study, you will fail. Nothing do with you are stupid. If people just think that doing good, karma will happen on rebirth, it's very short sighted.
well ahantu, if you put it that way then you are born into a family good genes = you handsome. Sometimes hardwork doesn't pay off even though most of the time it does.
Genes do play a role on how the physical look is. or other reasons But you should ask what kind of genes? there are people with genes that have high chance of getting certain diseases or there are genes that contribute with good skin or even looks. Karma should apply on when we are living. If you did something wrong few years ago, it may haunt you after 10 years. You will see the effect. If only believe everything is karma based on rebirth, then it's narrow minded.

Well how would like it. Do you want better future for yourself or you want a bad future. Nobody is judging you! It's you who forges your destiny. I saw people who did so many bad things because they didn't know there cause and effect. They plant those bad seeds, sooner or later, the seed will bear fruit. In the end, it them who will suffer most!

There are those who give without personal gain whether it may be more or less, they will receive more than those who give out alot but with personal gain. Ofcourse, Buddha knows people aren't sages. They can't give without thinking a little for themselves. Anyway, nobody can condemn us to hell or heaven but ourselves's action, thought and speech.

For me it doesn't really matter if you believe in Amitofo or not. It was Buddha Sakyamuni who told us about Amitofo and the existence of the Western Purelands since he alone knows. If one stick with Buddha Sakyamuni as you like, it is just fine for as long you take in to your heart his basic teaching and practice them. In my case I believe in the Medicine Buddha and Sakyamuni.

I agree w/ u & your Sifu. If a person who wants to lean how to swim so he won't drown, learning 1 basic stroke is best. But after leaning how to swim, u can master that skill by learning other strokes. It doesn't mean you've to forget the original intention w/c is staying alive in water. The radiance of your own enlightenment will guide you towards that spiritual growth, & the fundamentals of that growth will grow w/ you.
When you reach that level of understanding you will be able to sort differences and you will never vir away from the truth of your own existence and the common Universe we all belong to.
Have you travelled on the road where there are milestones? It is the same, this means whatever happened to you before and will happen in the past are related and that you are on the track. Good road or Bad road that is a question you alone can tell.
