@misterblue24 I agree - back then they would sing live but the play back was the recording since it was already done in a studio. If you were a guest at the show there live you would hear them live. The viewers at home got the professional recording. I remember watching AB back then. That and Solid Gold...memories!
so does this mean that the musicians are pretending to play instruments too? lol i was born in 92' so i've never seen this person before but she doesn't look like she should be singing this type of song..she looks likes a punk rocker!! oh yea does she really speak like that? omg!!...LOVE GIRLS JUST WANA HAVE FUN
just to clarify... almost no one sang live on American Bandstand. I've seen a lot of clips of American Bandstand over the years and you can clearly tell a lot of them lipsynced, even big artists like Madonna & Janet Jackson. We all know Cyndi has a great voice and can sing live.
@Shediac It didn't just apply to American Bandstand. Most music shows in the 50s, 60s, 70s and early to mid 80s had lip-synching. Even if the artist wanted to sing live, they never had a choice in the matter. It was a decision on the record company's part, and sometimes the music show, to keep the performance the same as the record. The fear behind live performances was that if a song differentiated too much from the album version, it could affect record sales.
Cool video. I met Cyndi Lauper back in the spring in NYC at JR Music. She was signing for her new CD, "Memphis Blues" it's a damn good CD too. She was so happy that me being 20 then was a fan of her music, and I was humming the riff to "She-Bop". She told me I was so cute. I have to admit, I was blushing. lol
According to one of the many unauthorized biography's of Madonna, This particular taping of American Bandstand, had both Cyndi and Madonna taping their performances the same day. Outside of the 1985 American Music Awards, I believe this is only other time these two were on the same stage together at the same time. Also, according to the Biography, each one viewed each other's performance from the side line; carefully studying the performance as a whole.
that's playback...
