  • Ok I have permed hair and my hair is fairly short. But I want to go natural how do I go about this? Do I cut off my permed ends or do I just allow it to grow out?

  • @ClassyBaby14 The decision of how to go natural is relative. Some women feel the need to grow their hair our through wigs, weaves and extensions. Others cut their permed ends off and reveal a short afro. Some women even shave their head. Whatever works best for you and your lifestyle is what you should go with.

  • I need help with my hair care. I just cut my hair a month ago and I still have straight ends and I need to know what to do. I posted a video so if you can please help me.

  • God Bless you! Your video expressed exactly how I feel going through my first big chop@ 50! Though you are young, you have wisdom. I am now looking forward to embracing my TWA!

  • @detstott Rock on!! Thank you so much and stay beautiful!

  • @detstott girl im 45 and i just buzzed my hair on 2/4/12.....nice to see im not the only women in our generation doing this...i cant wait to go through the experience of growing my natural back!!

  • The information is grreat! I have been without a perm for 1 year and recently cut my hair as short as your to get all the perm out! It is a Great process that you turly have to get use to! Thank you! I am not alone with my Jounery!

  • who is jerome

  • I know this video is old. But i just cut my hair as short as yours. Do you think it'll grow back natural? IM mixed (white&Black) So do you think it'll come in Naturally curly?

  • @breannakaye93 Emailed ya, darlin'.

  • How do you cut your hair like that? I'm rather new to haircuts, I only got my first haircut a few months ago, so I really have no idea what to do to explain what style I want.

You like nice like that. You look feminine even with short hair.

  • @ACluelessKid I got my hair cut at Supercuts for $8. Woot!

  • its NOT just hair....but like u said stay beautiful coz u are....ure lucky u can pull of the short look. not many can....jus cut mine....i have good and BAD days.

  • I want ti cut my natural hair and get a fade cut, but i can't find pics of girls or guys with the cut I have in mind.

  • Flat Ironing my hair made my hair go straight and I was missing my curls...I dont know my hair texture so I cut off all my hair as well.

  • Hey I like the style of your hair. I have decided to go natural and I have cut off all of my hair. I have the boyish cut now. I am wondering what type if hair products do you use for your natural hair? Is there some type of line of products you're using?

  • @pinksugamama I've got locs now so I use different products than what I used on my loose natural hair.

  • Comment removed

  • my hair was last permed about 3 weeks ago, and im traveling in 4 weeks...but i NEED to cut my hair. i want it like your length but would it work if its permed, or even braided for 3 weeks. i dont know what to do. PLEASE HELP.

  • @yoitstima I say cut it off. All of it. It's super liberating. Then again, you have to do what will make you happy. I'm not sure how your hair will look at my length permed but it's worth a try. If you don't like it, you can always braid it up and grow it out a bit.

  • Thank u for posting this on youtube girl I was feeling so so alone because I did the big chop like three weeks ago and I was like wow now what am I going to do I have to wear this around my man OMG its like wow but my man tells me he love me for me and he says I'm pretty all the time but just doing this for the first time is so empowerment for us as black young sista but yes you made me feel that I'm not by myself and I can do this but thank you doll u are a help to black sista like me

  • @Olivia303030 Stay beautiful, mama.

  • Curly hair is the most fragile and a lot of natural people should be aware of what heat setting they have their flat irons set to, more than 400 degrees on a flat iron can be damaging, and flat ironing all the time. But every once in awhile will not hurt.

  • @GaShorty06 I agree....but unfortunately a lot of us don't know that. Myself included. :(

  • You are absolutely gorgeous!!

  • i agree with you 100%.it's amazing how so many of us women of color think of others people opinion when trying to go natural. be you just b yourself regardless of what people say. BE BLESSED!!!

  • i agree with you 100%.

  • sis i love your short hair...very cute, sassy, regal...reflection

  • Hello,

I need help. I've never done this and I'm not even sure I'm going about it the right way. I'm considering going natural. My hair type is the coarsest you'd ever find. I'm in Australia and can't easily access black products. I just need advice. Of all the videos I've seen, your hair type seems closest to mine. PS. I'm somewhat of a tomboy. The most I can do is comb my hair!! But I am willing to learn. You communicate well and I would love a couple of pointers from you. Thanks

  • @daringderin Shoot me an email and I can better help you that way.

  • Black man here and i like to say i love Black women with natural hair styles. Really show me she is super confident in her self, and its sexy and they can style it in a million way. i got love for my African Queens and yeah not all black guys are jerks, i am a gentleman right here so keep on marching on. one day i hope to find my Black or African queen.

  • Not many people can wear this but it looks pretty good on you actually.

  • I know exactly what you mean. Same exact thing happened to me. My hair is GONE

  • You look beautiful.

  • Hello, I did the BC Thursday 4/28/2011, I need help my hair is just like yours, but very dry, thick, and corse. my hair color is 1B with a black rinse. What type of natural hair products should i get to make my hair soft and curly?

  • @Tstith93 Love the texture that grows out of your head. Period, sis.

  • i cut my hair like a month ago due to it breaking and bad headaches from relaxing procedures, so I'm natural I want so tips on what to use to assist the growth & strength and maybe possible style <---- yea i reaching with that part...But I want help...

  • @tobagoempress Hi lovely, shoot me an email and I can help. You can find my email address on my Channel page.

  • thanks for this video... iam going through the nerves now cause i have cut some of my relaxed ends off but not all yet because like you i felt like long hair define me being feminine. i hate dealing with two textures thats why iam want to cut it but not ready for the but chop because i will loose all of my red color that i and everyone else LOVES...but i think i will BC in a month. Iam about to get my hair in kiniki twist in a week..look forward to more videos on how to style this head. lol

  • you are so beautiful. I know that true beauty comes from within and I think by u cutting ur hair it let u dig in on the inside more. beauty really comes from within. There are so many girls that are "picture perfect" but are not happy. Embrace... urself

  • YOU are naturally beautiful!!!...and I genuinely appreciate you in your natural state...please continue to share your thoughts/passions as progressively as you can...it takes courage to do what you are doing in this day and age.. :))

..and to all of the ladies willing to BC or transition into a more natural state...just know that I appreciate and love you all!!.. :)

  • @IAMCZTV Thanks a ton!

  • @DivineBlackness no prob sis!..you deserve *love.. :)

  • Cool video, our hair is our glory.

  • how you do feel about hair color? do you think it will do the same damage?

  • @kurlykelly2010 I don't really like giving advice about hair color because I am no professional. But I love it. I have been coloring my hair since I've been natural and haven't experienced any damage. Except for that one time I bleached one of my locs. Definitely wouldn't recommend that.

  • Your hair looks healthy - I did the big chop today but I shave it all off check out my video.

  • Wow I subcribe to your LocRocker blog and I just saw your "length" post, then this video happened to pop up as a suggestion when I was watching another one, could you have imagined how long your hair would be just two years later?!?!?!?! It has grown LIKE CRAZY!!!

  • @brwnsunrise Yeah, it shocked me too. I'm not one of those naturals that has hair goals or obsessed with length so yeahhh....

  • @DivineBlackness I am probably a little length obsessed and you are my length hero..I hope my hair grows like that!!! Your hair is beautiful!

  • @brwnsunrise Keep showering your hair with a ton of love and it will. :)

  • i got more hair on my coochie than that lol

  • You look hot! You colored your brows with the hair color? mmm Thanks for inspring.

  • @Virkamsh Yep, I colored the brows. Thanks for watching!

  • Thank you for doing this video for the women who go natural for the very first time and for women who have to cut off damaged hair which I had to do yesterday I am new to this but I am going to stay true to this. My hair has been cut shorter then yours but I am going to rock it! I do love that I can get up each morning and don't have to wonder what style I am going to do for the day it does have it's benefits as well. so thank you for doing this video much need and very helpful.

  • @mzletstalk So glad this video could help you, sis. Feel free to message me with any questions. :)

  • hmm that is so weird that you flatironed it and it remained straight! never heard of that.

  • @Byanca4j Heat damages hair and I guess mine couldn't handle it. :(

  • IT BEAUTIFUL !!! WHAT PRODUCT DID YOU USE TO GIVE IT THE CURLY LOOK ?

  • @lolo19511 Glycerin and water!

  • Whoever gave this sista 3 thumbs down you need to be slapped. You see that's why alot of black women are discouraged to go natural is because of idiots like this. I am a natural sista and I notice that it's our own people who have a problem with natural nappy hair. This is who we are and people need to embrace it.

  • this was perfect for me to see, i`m getting my hair cut and I decided to do it only if I got it colored!

I`ve always felt that my hair gave me a little confidence, but now I have to find it within myself [no more crutch]!!

  • @natcary7 Rock on, queen!

  • i know exactly what you mean. i colored my hair two.. i always use the honey blonde so i decided to go red this time ( trying to get kelis hair color in her new video)... but yea, i feel myself wanting to be more feminine, buying only dresses and like you said, eyebrows and earrings. most days i love my hair. but for the days i don't i just get on here to remember why i did the big chop. almost three weeks now :)

  • @rayel16 Congrats on your BC, sis! Love it and embrace it b/c you are beautiful!

  • did the color break your hair

  • @mybeautyisblack Nope! Not at all!

  • it looks fab, love the colour, I have relaxed my hair for years and now I have been relaxer free fro 5 weeks,iv got some bald patches of alopecia and before i do the big chop in need this to grow back not sure what to use in it and as the relaxer grows not sure what to use to get it back to naturality!

    my cousin recommends castor oil.

your video inspired me, thanks x

  • @sassyblack123 Time and a healthy diet, mama. :)

  • omgggg i gt my natural hair straigtened by the dominicans nd it wont go bakkk im soo devastated! i have to cut it off because it wont go by to its curly state. its been like 3mths so i gotta cut it!

  • I did the big cut after 14 weeks of transitioning...

and plz ask me r tell me it would b really cute if u straighten it r pressed it I am like I am not putting any heat in it...they want to change me and I refuse to change for u...

    thanks for the info..

and u r rocking that fro'

  • @sassie37 That's right my sista. Rock your hair how YOU want to rock it!

  • curl it

  • I just did the big chop after transitioning for almost a year and you just described exactly how I felt when my hair was first gone - do I still look like a woman? I've found that I do work a little harder to insure that my beauty shines through regardless of my TWA. I'm in week #2 and I'm kinda starting to love it a little lol

  • @Songstress2004 Rock on, sis!

  • i feel you, i HAD to cut off all my hair, its so funny that you have to get use to feeling "pretty" w/o your hair. im still getting use to it, but I do wear wigs to work

  • I just did the big chop about a month ago for the same reason. I have been natural for eight years and I got it straigtend for my wedding....afterwards, my hair was straight like a perm!!!!! Now I have a TWA once again.

  • @kinkyblissforever Rock that TWA, sis!

  • I FREAKING LOVE IT! YOU LOOK AMAZING

  • @rachelninetyfive Thanks sis! I really miss that short cut.

  • All natural, I love it! You're such an awesome example to all women or all races! =)

  • @MrsJasonT Thank you so much. What a nice thing to say!

  • @DivineBlackness Oops, I meant "all women OF all races" =D

  • Well. Didn't get my hair cut. I was talked out of it. At least until the broken off place grow out alittle more. Sooo. I am doing something I was against and just fought tooth and nail. Wearing a half wig. It's kind of not that bad :-/ BUT I can not WAIT for the broken off area to catch enough to start over again.

  • So glad you were totally honest in this vid. I was natural for two years before I reverted back to the creamy crack! I suffered from lots of the same issues you mentioned in the vid on top of just not knowing what to do with it. My hair was about an inch or so longer than yours...thank you sis!!

  • I know this is old, but thanks for this I can relate. I did exactly the same thing to my hair last year October - I fried it!! I didn't realise that the straight ends were damaged hairs. So a few weeks ago i decided to chop them off and start a fresh. I didn't do the big chop, just a diy major trim - couldn't face doing that so no more heat for me. I am new to youtube, thankfully im now more educated on how to care for my natural hair.... joining the journey :-) All the best with you and yours.

  • I actually really like your hair and wish more black women rocked it.

  • Thanks! I do too. But as some folx say, "It ain't for everybody". Pshht, I guess.

  • I agree. I am 1 year 3 months into my natural hair. I was nervous and self conscience at first. Then it grew on and loved it. NOW due to some different factors my hair in the top has broken off severely! And I have THICK coarse curly hair. Now I am more self conscience than ever that it is broken and trying to hide it. Not very easy to do. Sooo. I think it is time to cut again.

  • Yep, I say chop it off again. The second time around is a little easier.

  • im going through the same thing. ive been natural for a while and due to different factors my hair has broken. im tried of all the different hair lengths, im gonna cut it. im so scared, ive never really CUT my hair, ive always transition...oh well it must be did. thx :(

  • thank you sooo much!!!! because my family really dont understand....yep...i gotta go through this one by myself....love your hair and color...

  • Rock on, sis! There is a lot of support on the interwebs so in a sense you're not alone. :) Many blessings!

  • i big chopped in oct but wore a protective style for four months. just last week i wore my hair unprotected for the first time and i absolutely love it. short hair is beautiful and yours is hot. i love the color. walk proud and any and all beauty will shine through. rock it!

  • Isn't loving your hair a beautiful thing?

  • Its great to see a growing number of our young women returning to natural hairstyles. If they knew a history of our culture, they would know that understanding that these hairstyles are ancient, royal, divine, and sacred. There are display cases in the Cairo Museum in Egypt full of the royal wigs. They are all wigs of those huge afros like what our women wore in the 60s & early 70s. Oh, hair and nails are protein. Maybe you should add a high quality supplement to your diet.

  • your hair is beautiful....can't get any more real than that.....

  • Thank youuuuu.

  • what is twa

  • Tweeny weeny afro

  • I think your short hair looks great!!And I totally feel you, I just started back to natural hair with a big chop and at the beggining I was just trying to find my feminity, but the more time pass by and the more confidence I have!!! I feel when someone looks at me they really look at my true beauty!!!

  • I like your twa! The same thing happened to me. I was natural for 9 years and I started straightening my hair with a flat iron and it wouldn't curl anymore, so i did the BIG chop. I like it super short though.

  • Yeah, I hated that I had to BC again but I REALLY loved this length. Will definitely BC again. :)

  • cute face, girl you look fine

  • Thanks!

  • i did the BC Sept. 08 and it wasn't that hard for me to accept because i had short hair to begin with. but for everyone around me it took some time. and i've even got criticized because i still have a twa after a lil over a year. so it's been a journey that i don't plan on giving up on

  • Rock on, sis!

  • what color did you use in your hair?

  • Gosh, I can't remember. It was a semi-permanent from Dark & Lovely.

  • I did the BC 2 days ago & my hair is only an inch long. So I totally agree that people have to go through it to understand, because at 1st I was like, " I know I won't making a big deal when I do the BC." And let me tell you, I was that and worse.

I felt like I looked ugly, but now I'm loving my hair

& let me tell you I'm a tomboy, & I just dress whatever to school. But now I know I have to do more stuff to look more like a female, wear female clothes, wear earrings, etc

    But I love your hair

  • Sis, you are beautiful. Embrace all of your facial features.....which are indeed feminine. Hair doesn't make you a woman. I never felt so more beautiful with that short fro. Do you, be you and accept you.

  • I love your video. Thanks alot. I did the BC in January and again in April 2009, because short was so easy. But now I want some hair and I'm letting it grow. But I can't tie it, it's too short. It is not just hair. I agree so much with you and everybody I know is asking why can't I just put a perm. No I wand/need to embrace the real me. It's not esy when you are the only one with that need. When I feel lonely I go on Youtube. Take care.

  • BCing is tough...especially when you don't have much support. The online community was there for me too and made me realize that there are a lot of ladies going through the same thing I'm going through. So...we love ya!! And we're in this together. :)

  • You are sooo rite. I flat ironed my hair in May 09, only one time and it was never the same. Im doing another bc asap. nice vid

  • DivineBlackness have you ever tried the Bigen hair dye...its a powdered dye you just add a little water to it...My problem it I need to accessorize my look with my hair I do not know how to apply make up point blank period but i know how to apply lip gloss.

  • Nope, I have never tried that dye. And I have some make-up vids. Check em out. :)

  • i hear you on the straightening piece...I straightened my hair about 6 weeks ago; had a press and curl just so I could get a good trim and this idiot "stylist" ruined my hair....completely fried it! I had to cut it really short like you....I feel like I'm starting all over again ...I went to a really great stylist though to correct the damage....she cut it and colored it and I'm really loving my new hair style and color, so I'm not feeling too bad..

  • Good for you! Glad you are loving your hair again. It took me some time but I am lovin' mine too.

  • Yes!!! Someone who was going though the same thing that I'm going through now!

Earlier this month I got tired of straighting my hair, so I wanted to do my hair in natural styles.

However, I have straighted my hair for 6 years and because of that, the ends of my hair are bone straight.

Tried the natural styles, and I'm at wit's end. Nothing works and I'm going crazy.

I'm seriously thinking of starting over again, but I'm terrified of what it will look like.

  • Why be terrified? It's just hair, darlin'....turn that fear into motivation and take control of your hair. You'll feel more liberated and can begin to take better care of your hair. I say go for it!!

  • Thanks for being so honest. It is a big deal to do the chop. And we do feel like we have to work on other aspects of our person (face, body, personality) to assert our femininity because our hair is gone! I'm loving my twa but I also notice that I feel more vulnerable.

On another tip: I LOVE YOUR COLOUR! I can't wait until my hair's healthy enough for me to add colour to it (It'll likely be a rinse).

You're beautiful and an inspiration to me.

    GOD bless you!

  • You're beautiful....

And yes, get the hair all nice and healthy so you can get your color. I'm going to re-color again tonight!

  • I chopped it all off a few days ago.Now I never leave the house w/o eye liner, mascara and gloss. I can't wait 'till Jan when I can actually do cute styles. Now I just have this glob of hair that's too short to do anything w/. Oh well!

  • Thanks for making this vid! You inspired me to cut my hair to about 1 inch! I had the same flat iron damage problem from a maxi glide after just 1 usage!

  • Ohmigoodness, you're going to chop? Let me know how it turns out. It'll be fine. You will be as gorgeous as ever!

  • I feel you on the heat for the straight look. Just watched a Dominican blowout. To much heat for me. I can see that styling practice messing up the natural kink. Love your cut.

  • Dominican blowouts were big when I first went natural so I never got one but from what people tell me, the heat is intense! I certainly don't want to screw up my natural kinks with heat ever again!

  • I love this video. I have my hair cut just like this. Have a semi mohawk. My current state is natural but looking for more styles as I grow it out.

  • Aww, one thing I REALLY miss about my loose natural hair was the mohawk. I can do it with my locs but they are so fierce with the natural hair. Have you tried 2-strand twists?

  • Not that long yet. About the length you have in this video. Will be by the end of this year though.

  • Short hair is cool but, the long hair is cutter.

  • Whatever floats your boat. Healthy hair is all that matters!

  • lol @ Jerome... we call it Tyrone, lol, & those earrings are cute!

but I'm so scared to dye my hair because I'm dark skinned and i think a color will make me look a little foolish. and i cant believe your hair wouldn't revert back to its original state after you straighten it, did you use a heat protectant?

  • LOL @ Jerome. I am cracking up. Thanks a lot, darling. You have to play around with color. Do a little at a time. You'll be surprised at how fabulous you'll look. And no, I didn't use a heat protectant. My silly self. :(

  • I think I'm gonna have to cut my hair too cause the front of my hair won't curl up anymore. But I'm scared of how it will look because I have such a round face. I also use honey blonde color! Love it!

  • You'll be fine. It'll grow back before you know it. Wear your crown, sis. :)

  • Your hair is really pretty and I like the color. Does it bother your facial skin to dye your brows? That's one thing that I was scared about for coloring. Also in the fall, you'll be able to rock some cute hats to keep the cold off. I am scared of BCing again bc my head is so big lol! But this transitioning hair is hard to deal with so I'm going to end up doing it again, I might try color to help. Blessings!

  • Nope, my skin was fine after dying the brows. But you should test a small patch on your hand if you are prone to allergic reactions. And stop it....LOL, people love to say their heads re too big to BC. That's just a lame excuse. Cut that hair, color it and be fabulous!

  • cont.

I'm not really sure what my "hair type" is and up until this point I've just been using Carol's Daughter products which are really great. I also use herbal essences totally twisted and hello hydration to condition along with my leave-in conditioners. Any other techniques or product suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and I love your color! You go girl!!!

  • Yay on your new journey! Shoot me a message so we can talk more. Got lots of things to share with you!

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I did the BC recently in May and I'm lovin it!!! It has been kind of crazy getting used to it, not because it's short because I've always worn my hair short, but I'm in Germany now and it's hard getting natural products shipped here...or to really know what I need to use.

  • I really enjoyed ur video. I've had a hard time finding other women with my current hair length. I did my BC exactly 2 wks ago today and have about 1 in - 11/2 in of natural hair. I can't wait to color it and in the past (on my relaxed hair) have used the same D&L hair color u did and loved it! Ifeel a little stagnant since my isso short and I can't wait to experiment with some cool styles.

  • Good luck, mama. I am sure your hair is beautiful and a little color will really make your crown stand out. Stay beautiful!

  • I owe you!! the confidence Ive got from you is leading me to my big chop that I've contemplated for a while now. Its not as scary as I felt! Thanks Divine Blackness!

  • Aww, good for you! I am so happy for you.

  • Thanks for the encouragement. i just did the big chop Thursday, and my hair length is the same as yours. I'm happy that I did it, but I feel like I looked prettier with my longer hair. But after watching your video, I feel a lot better today, lol, so thank you and God bless!

  • Yesss, congratulations!! I'm so glad you are embracing your gorgeous self.

  • I've seen that Luster's No Drip activator....but it always reminded me of a jheri curl. LOL! Does it smell like one?

  • I know why it reminds you of the Jheri curl. It's because a lot of people with Jheri curls over do it on the activator. You use just enough to moisturize your hair. It dried quickly but leaves your hair soft. It does not smell either, but i usually add the Stay so Fro spray which smells good.

  • i got my big chop!

-im excited;yet scared because idk what people will think && idk f it fits my face correctly.!

  • Did you?! Congratulations!!! Girl, you can't care what people think. Folx will have something to say about eveythiiiiing. You will do a lot of self-reflecting and self-loving throughout this journey. I'm so happy for you. Stay beautiful!

  • Did you do your own big chop? I'm thinking of doing my own big chop.

  • Nope....I did not. I did my 1st big chop by myself and got it shaped up at a salon. But this one...I went right into a random salon, asked if they did "Black hair" and had someone cut it off for me!

  • oh lord im getting mine cut im scared but i shouldnt be but my face..ugh i dunno if itd look as nice on me!?

  • Girl hush....it will look beautiful on you. It may take some getting used to but I guarantee you....give it a few days (ahem, took me weeks but I digress...lol) and you will have a love for yourself that you have never had. It's amazing. Many blessings. You'll be fine. :)

  • Oh My Goodness! The same thing happened to me! I chopped mine for the second time last year. It's so CRAZY how fast your hair grows back when you just give it a chance. And you so right! I will NEVER staighten my hair to that extent again! You have to LOVE your hair.

  • I know...you are SO right. I never would have thought my hair would be as long as it is right now. When you actually take care of your hair, guess what? It grows! I love it!

  • I know this is one of your older vids, but I saw that you colored your hair. You said it didn't dry your hair up, so I was wondering if you pretreated your hair or anything. I dyed my hair with Texture and Tones brand and now i'm struggling trying to keep it moisturized!! :-|

  • Hmmm....I probably should have but I didn't pre-treat my hair at all. Like you, months later, I did experience some lack-of-moisture issues. I did less daily co-washes (that would dry me hair out a lot) and a lot more deep treatments. I could talk all day about it. Shoot me an email/message. :)

  • Gurllllllllll u r soo pretty and u just inspired me to do the same... I was a little scared to do it at first you know i was a little skeptical but now im convinced for surer!!!!! again u look gorgeous real talk

  • Thank you so much, sis! Let me know if you do it or not! But you really should. It's a liberating experience!

  • Did you cut your hair yourself or did you go to the Salon?

  • I went to a salon and got it done. Supercuts or somethin' like that. They only charged me $13. I can't even cut paper so cutting my own hair wasn't even an option. Ha!

  • your TWA is so pretty on you!

  • Thanks lady! I realllly miss it.

  • yes it is liberating i tell everyone that says " i want to do that" loving yourself is a beautiful thing. appreciating what God gave us. and you look great by the way.

  • Co-sign!! You are so right, sis..and thank you so much.

  • That's a cute cut
