cool camera! do you know you can control this camera with an infrared remote? I know..you're saying "no, this cameras as no IR receiver". but.. Yap you cant control it wirelessly! great for long exposures and remote shooting! check out how at this link (copy to browsers address bar): remoteALL.bymac.org
So apparently these cameras were exported. Does anyone know if the advert was actually from the DDR or from the west? Either way...it's extremely weird
@garythegit you should watch german tv now, like people having sex to sell a parfume... or look for some stuff on ebay, there is one guy selling showers and there is always a naked women in the pictures... oh well, thats why i don't wath tv that often...^^
My first camera was a praktica Super TL, with a 200mm, and 35mm lenses. I liked the detent in the shutter dial, and the big round exposure meter in the front. I am now a camera designer, and still have the feeling of that camera in me. It will not die. Back then a one second exposure had an unforgettable sound. Turning of the wind lever had a certain satisfaction. Putting on the film, and taking it out required more faith. Today, we have less faith in our abilities, and rely on microchips.
I think the rise of digital would have killed off Pentacon film cameras, if the company had survived.
The BX20 & the earlier B models had a auto exposure of as long as 40 seconds. Great if photographing inside a derelict house. My only worry was not putting my foot through the floor.
The cameras made post GDR showed great promise. Some only survive as prototypes.
Its a pity that the German government had let the Pentacon factory go under. Praktica had made the first SLR camera in the world, therefore every modern camera today is a descendant of Praktica. Just to compare, Leica was stuck in range-finder "technology" even in the 50-s, and the Japanese had to build (and they still do) every R-series for Leica. Not to mention that every Praktica was 100% German made including the screws, while the 5000 Euro Leica M8 is made in Singapore. A joke.
Not 100% true. The probably first SLR camera was made by Exacta. Which was later made by VEB Pentacon Dresden. In the 80's, Praktica had some parts manufactured under licence in Japan, like the Winder and some electronics for the B series.
I have a Praktica BCA which is a model or 2 below the BX20 though looks nearly identical. Its fully automatic with apeture priority. I also have a Carl Zeiss Jena telephoto for it. Its a really good camera, it takes pictures as good or better than my Canon AE-1.

And i see the rare zoom - Practicar 28-200... that's the only zoom made for Prakticas. All other lenses was prime.

With a production like that, it seems that Praktica is a West German product.
The Germans make better commies than Russians.
