  • i have a simple question. is it depends where on the earth you live ? In other words is the earth temperature same in all continents and areas. Do I have to be near hot spring of water etc.

  • @homie0smurf. Ground temperatures are only slightly different depending where you live, but not as much as you'd think (maybe 10 degrees from PA to FL). Geothermal Heating and Cooling works anywhere in the U.S. Ground temperature has nothing to do with hot springs, volcano, etc. The ground is heated by the sun, not the earths core. It stays a consistent temperature which makes geothermal viable is almost any situation.

  • As far as costs go - please consider reading the article "Geothermal by the numbers pa". It explains why geothermal can be a good financial investment in a property. To get to it simply google "Geothermal by the Numbers PA"

  • @donnacha2006.

Geothermal is a more efficient heating and cooling system. This means one would use less fossil fuel (heating oil, propane, coal, etc.) to heat their home during the winter and they would also use less electricity in the summer to air condition than before.

Insulation is good too, I would recommend insulation and then installing a more efficient system.

In summary geothermal systems allow homeowners to burn significantly less fossil fuels and use less electricity.

  • bullshit. save the earth my ass. unless u have a wind turbine powering the heat pump and circulating pumps u aint saving shit. as far as i know (because no one will tell me) it costs 2-3 k a year to run this system depending on the house size. 20k to 30k to install. spend ur money on insulation and u wont need much if any heat

  • @donnacha2006 Easy there Cheif - a geothermal system does require electricity to circulate the pumps, but it requires significantly less electricity than any other option. Lets say you had window air conditioners, you'd be using alot of electricity to power them. Now lets say you had geothermal, you would be using a fraction of the electricity (less than 1/4) to produce the air conditioning you need. You are correct that insulation should be addressed first.

  • 3 people hate the Earth

  • What would make this the "right thing to do" is make it free or at least non profit to start.

  • interesting

  • very cool

  • this is the future form to use our own energy. is the greatest for to use energy. i have this in house =)

  • Cool Stuff

  • This is Awesome!

  • kool i need one now

  • thats what i need

  • excelent alternative

  • Awesome totally cool!!

  • Esto es mucho mejor, que las placas solares. Y a la larga más barato!!!!!

  • great video

  • This is a good video!

  • good stuff

  • Very Cool!

  • I will be off lp heating in 2012!!!!!

  • i think whay the geothermal energy is cool , is a nice idea .

  • i think whay the geothermal energy is cool , is a nice idea .

  • the geothermal energy ias a amazing idea

  • good

  • I believe that geothermal energy is a very good alternative

  • awsome man!

  • nice

  • anyway to get off the grid, even more is my kind of deal

  • This is very cool! I will be buying one soon. Seems like it will save me a lot of money in the long term.

  • What if I don't have a basement?

  • What if you don't have a basement?

  • its a great idea!!

  • awesome Idea!!! more people should do this!

  • I did not know this thank u i will look into saving much money and telling my friends and family

  • I dIdn't know this thanku i will lookinto saving much money and telling my friends and family

  • so interesting)))

  • Kill-A-Watt

  • That's interesting...

  • Thats pretty awesome.

  • This is so awesome! I already knew about how geothermal heat worked, but I had no idea it can cool as well. that is amazing and great for allergy sufferers like myself. I can't wait to get out of this moldy apartment, when I buy a house, geothermal will be the way I operate my home! yeah!

  • It's terrific to know that you are contributing to alternative ways to heat and cool homes. The world would be a better place if all businesses looked at ways to make our earth more efficient. Great job guys!!! Two thumbs up!!!

  • cool!

  • Very interesting

  • it's a no brainer - geothermal heat pump at 400% vs. 94% efficiency....better make the switch!

  • wow....94% efficiency compared to a 400% geothermal - um...it's a no brainer! I better go geothermal!

  • How long it takes to recoup cost the system?

  • @fromkeila between 5-7 years depending on different variables; use our ball park calculator to get a closer idea ... How many years does it take for a gas furnace to start paying you back? (Answer: it never will; it is just an ever continuing and GROWING expense)

  • I thought it was very interesting as well.... definitely worth considering the option and I would like it to be an option in apartments

  • @duck0326 Apartment buildings can be heated and cooled using geothermal, however you're correct that individual apartments might not be a financially wise option for geo.

  • if only i had the money for all this....interesting indeed.

  • Interesting to try this in Russia)

  • if you live on a sand hill would it still work?

i really want to go green

  • Super!!!!!

  • My Dad just said something to me about this today. I want to rebuild my home and become self sufficient and this would hopefully reduce my heating cost drastically!

  • i've always been interested in geothermal heating and cooling, and am considering it as an option when i buy a house! will definitely look into this more!

  • Great idea.. hope hospitals and major corporations can use this idea to cut costs and resources!

  • @scottiencali Commercial geothermal heating and cooling is very popular; many hospitals, schools, and office buildings have all either converted to or been constructed with geothermal systems.

  • this video is very interesting would love to install a geothermal heat pump if it is affordable

  • very cool!

  • I've been aware of this since I was in junior high. I have ALWAYS been a proponent of geothermal energy, but all my attempts to introduce this to anyone fell on deaf ears, as I am considered a "nobody". The oil companies and coal companies have, and will continue to negate the positive benefits to this infinite energy as there is no profit in it for them. I wish you better luck than I've had. I gave up. Good to see someone else pick up the ball and run with it.

  • It's just "geothetically" possible that this planet may survive.

  • this was interesting i might just have to check it out further

  • This looks very interesting and futuristic, genius!

  • Georthermal energy is the way of the future, and GeothermalGenius is leading the way.

  • Yay! Thank you for the info!

  • very informative!

  • keep up the GREAT work!!!

  • cool video

  • Quite interesting indeed, I'll have to check it out.

  • ok by me

  • sounds good to me

  • That is a great innovation. I am going to soon go fully electric! Energize and economize!!!

  • Not too hot...not too cold...juuuuust right. Goldilocks is gonna like this and so do I.

  • Our home is all electric now.

My concern is for the cost of equipment and installation.....

  • I remember doing a science project back in the day...we need more of these!

  • I live in San Antonio in an area called THE LAVACA DISTRICT,They have torn down the old houses and built green energy houses with such things as GHP'S and renewable recyclable water systems> I hope this backward town can be first in something positive.

  • I intend to send this video to a building contractor friend .I was not previously aware of geothermal cooling and heating

  • Great product (hopefully); great video (definitely); but kudoes to whoever put it together, for having Closed Captioning available for the hearing impaired!!! Many videos are frustratingly useless because the message cannot be heard or understood. So again, thank you!

  • if I had the land and money, I'd go for this

  • Sure beats installing a panel on my roof!

  • @gustan We thought that too! The geothermal heating and cooling system we installed in our own home had a faster payback period than solar. In addition, after the original installation of the system you wouldn't even know we had it (except for the air comfort and quality inside).

  • Very practcal! Why don't more people use this?

  • @scheisy1 More than you think use it. The problem is that unlike solar it's hard to spot every house that uses it. The second reason is that many people have never considered geothermal but awareness is increasing every day.

  • Very interesting video.

  • Yay!

  • I've got solar panels in here in florida, but this is still a good idea. It would be nice if the gov't had a rebate incentive and could reduce the costs for installation, especially with the dependency on foreign oil, global warming, and cost of fossil fuels continuing to rise.

  • @hanhunk69 There is actually federal (30%), state (varies by state), and local tax incentives!

  • @hanhunk69 You want a handout? What a moocher. Buy and pay for your OWN things and stop expecting other people (tax payers) to buy your things for you.

That said - this is really fascinating technology which could catch on easily.

  • wonderful. All homes should have this.

  • more people need to get in on this. when we build a house, we will be using geothermal heating.

  • good stuff. I love when such simple solutions can be implemented to solve everyday problems that cause such waste.

  • good information. if I build a new house in TX I'll look at this as an option before the slab is poured. Our yards are way too small to retrofit for this.

  • I imagine the savings on heating and cooling bills would be substantial, but like GoGeo11 above I wonder about the initial outlay. Even with a 30% tax credit, I imagine it's pretty expensive! And a tax credit is quite different than a direct discount or rebate.

    Still, geothermal is pretty impressive.

  • very knowledgeable.. but not every house has a basement

  • very knowledgeably but not every house has a basement

  • My son has for several years spoke of the exact information as in this Video. He pointed out how this would bring our country into a true Environmental safer way of energy! We are both Disabled and live on $690.00 a month. . That amount is not much to live on. I see now it would have been nice if my son and I could have got in on the ground floor of this! I wish you much prosperity and you are Awesome! Brilliant! Warmly, Barbara "Be kind to yourself always."

  • It would be nice if all new houses built had this!

  • Interesting

  • This is a great video on the basics of geothermal heating and cooling. I did not realize the heat produced verses electricity used ratio was so large. It is easy to see how a system like this would pay for itself quite efficiently.

  • These are awesome! Hope to have it again someday!

  • We had geothermal in our other house but moved out of town. Only going to be in this house a couple of years and it's 4 years old. Wouldn't be financially adviseable for us to get one, however; anyone that is thinking about it, they are awesome!

  • Geothermals should be implemented into future housing developments seeing as how well they perform and the savings that they give back.

  • @doctormatttran right you are! More and more home builders are making it standard.

  • I hope there will soon be a way to get this into established neighborhoods with homes close together...

  • I wish there were more space between the homes on our street...I dont think we can do it till our "dream" home, several yrs away...lovelovelove it though!

  • I showed this to my AP Environmental Science class last year. Good video.

  • I sure like geothermals.

  • Nice Idea.

    Ground heat variations per state?

    Raised or slab foundations?

Basement big enough to store equipment? Looks kinda large. I know it's not to scale but...

  • @MsBigEight The ground temperates do not vary as much as you would think from state to state (about 15 degrees from ME to FL) and they are taken into consideration when installing the system. The entire system in the basement is even not as big as a refrigerator.

  • This video is a good education tool.

  • this is really a good idea.

  • Cool

  • i think this would eventually pay for itself saving the environment and reducing payments to the heating companies

  • @mo4ya2 Yes it does! 5-7 years.

  • I see no trees, I live in the woods temp is always cooler. What about radon problems. How well does this work in the North.

  • @twirlingtizzy Works very well. Read about your area in our states pages or contact a pro through our site to get more information.

  • sweet.. ty for the info.... wish we had something like this.

  • Looks quite cool :)

  • I think this is the "Smart Thing to Do" in regards to providing HVAC for a home.

  • It would be wonderful to upgrade to newer home heating equipment.

  • What a great and informational video. You learn something new everyday.

  • this video was well made and easy to understand

  • So basically you have to dig up the whole yard. Sounds like a better plan for a new build than the old house I live in.

  • @sukwarlord Geothermal is ideal for new construction - however more than half of installations are retrofits. There are great drilling techniques which reduce the destruction to a yard, most contractors do clean up the mess and restore it the way they found it. As small as an 10x10 area needs to be disturbed in some cases.

  • Why isn't geothermal heating and cooling used for everything? Seems like the most practical, money saving way to go. Very beneficial.

  • @ahowman88 Well there are lots of reason for that. 1) Up front investment 2) lack of public awareness and understanding. Did you know Sweden is nearly 90% geothermal heating and cooling?

  • Does that mean I have dig holes under my house?

  • @nyng88 - No, the loop field is usually installed in your front/back yard. The pipes are then brought back into a basement to the geothermal unit.

  • Great video showing use of real natural resources

  • This is what needs to be done to sustain things. We cannot keep what we are doing and intend to survive for genetrations.

  • @bluntley420 Its simple, its genius. I won't burn another gallon of oil to heat my home... ever.

  • great use of true natural resources

  • A GREAT WAY TO SAVE A LOT OF MONEY !!!!

  • Very interesting. I am writing a research paper on electric cars as a way to save energy. This is the same concept, except for the home. I love it!

  • great video thanks

  • good stuff! very informative

  • Great video, very informative :)

  • great video , i have a geothermal heat system and it great.

  • Great Explanation !

  • There are other types of Geothermal energy. Here in Klamath Falls we have a well about 300ft deep and the water is 175*

  • @buckbuckaroo1 Hey, got a reference for that Gov Can thing?

  • thanks we needed that for a project

  • Just put one into my house and thought some would like a cost breakdown. I just bought a house and needed to add all the ductwork, the heat pump, water heater, desuperheater, an ERV, and drill the wells. Fortunately, the Fed credit can be applied to all these things. The initial expense was daunting at 41K but the 30% Fed credit knocked 12.3 K off that. I also received a 5K property tax credit from my country and a 2.5K grant from the state. This brought the net to around 21K. Not too bad!

  • the vast majority of heat source of the earth is radioactive decay of elements like Uranium, Cobalt 60, Radium 225, Zenon's... , not the sun warming the soil. This is actually better for the geothermal storyline in that the energy is going to migrate out no matter if you suck it out thru a pipe or it just slowly radiates.

I am planning on building a house with a geothermal unit. Already have the land. Likely will include a small pond as another sink/source field.

  • I almost feel like a fool for not installing a geothermal heating system when I built my home. I am glad that it would still be cost effective to install one now though, since I will live in this house for at least another 10 years!

  • best video explaining geothermal i've ever seen.

before, i wasn't really gettin it, but i'm definitely gettin it now

  • Pictures are indeed worth a thousand words. This animation explained the working principle and benefits of using geothermal energy lucidly.

  • Great Video for homeowners to grasp the concept of Geothermal. With the 30% Federal Tax credit available for geo now is the time to retrofit. I've seen many families finance these systems (they do have a higher initial cost) and actually have a lower monthly payment (Financing + operating cost) then they would with a traditional comfort system. Anyone paying the gas or oil company thousands of dollars each winter needs to talk with a geothermal contractor.

  • Thanks! I found this video very helpful. However, I'm worried about the cost of installing a geothermal heat pump. Is there any way to get a rough estimated cost for my home?

  • @kpisme1988 Your concern is a very common one. Thanks to the Recovery Act there are a number of financial incentives associated with GHPs included a 30% federal tax credit. Go to geothermalgenius. org/ calculator to find out exactly how much your home will save with a geothermal heat pump.

  • @destroy0011

Thanks for your comment and great question. Both a vertical and horizontal installation vary in time due to soil conditions and loop field size. Generally, the drilling and installation will take 2-3 days. Almost all geothermal systems can be installed within a week. The air is transferred from underground to inside your home using an antifreeze-like solution that is pushed through the underground piping and into the indoor unit.
