I still think that regardless of whether there would have been gates installed the reckless driver would have went around them anyway.

@nighttrain334 There is no turbo spooling in that video moron. What you hear is the air dumping out of the train line. That said, trains do have a dynamic braking system that users the traction motors wired through a resistor bank to generate braking force. However when the mushroom is whacked, and I promise you the e-stop button was hit in this case, it quickly rotates the reverser drum to neutral and dumps all air from the train line, setting braking force at maximum.

I feel bad for the four in the car and there families. I also feel bad for the conductor and engineer, there is a huge ripple effect with this accident. The conductor has to walk back and ck on the wreck, R.R. rules. Now he is scarred for life and has nightmares, his wife and children have to deal with this. Same thing with the engineer, and his family. Then when they are just about able to deal with it YEARS later, the law suits make it to court and they have to relive it all over again. RIPPLE

I just read the news report on this whole thing and my god does it piss me off. The driver, Dan Broughton. A 19 year old with a suspended license for numerous traffic offenses including speeding and not stopping at stop signs. He decided he was a special snowflake who didn't need to obey laws and continued to drive anyway, like so. I'm very sorry to the families of those 4 teens.

Hannan Road, where the collision occurred, is exactly half a mile from Lotz Road, before crossing which the train came to a halt. Watched a show that interviewed conductors and all that were on this show said when they see a car cross the tracks in front of them, if they know they're going to hit the car, they hit the breaks and dive onto the floor, so they dont see the car get hit. They also said if they see a person standing on the tracks and they dont move when they blow the horn, they turn off the lights and hit the breaks.
