my father in law spent 2 years in australia, he loved his time there and often spoke to me about slim and his music. in his later years i played this for him many times and grew to love it myself
I'm a Brit [ya know..the ones who play good cricket LOL] but I gotta tell you guys..this is awesome !! I play in a rock/blues band and this one is gonna get sneaked in once I get the guitarist [I'm the singer] onto the case LOL..can't wait to see those faces !!!!! Thanks Mr Slim where-ever you are..the world of music so needs folk like you and you inspired this old rocker !!Who said the old dog can't be taught new tricks!!! Bye to my Aussie cousins..Respect, Ray Cooke x
Gordon Parsons never wrote this. This was composed by Dan Sheehan about the Day Dawn hotel in Ingham. My grandfather (John Cappler) was his friend and was once a blacksmith. He became "Billy". They lived near each other in a place called Long Pocket. Grandad used to make moonshine(rum) for the Yanks in 1942
The Sheenans considered legal action against Parsons. Never got around to it, so it would seem.
@saferain1 talors arm is where the original song was about a flood stopped the trucks getting alcohol to it so your grandad talks shit slim even acknowledged it look it up
hahaha this song still get me only an aussie would think to write it hahahaha ....god bless our humour ....its kinda like when red rooster runs outta chicken xD i reckon if my step dad came across a pub with no beer he'd cry :P
@randomaccount39 Yeah, the tune was definitely written by the American Stephen Foster back in the 19th century. But, hey, you've got to admit the Australian lyrics are awesome!
This song, along with the vision of beerless pub terrifies me so much, that I can barely listen to this song... Thank God Dusty recorded an answer to that song!
I found something called "APubWithNoBeer" in the music folder of my installation of Unreal Tournament 2004... I think it's a parody of this. Will post a video of it shortly. If anyone knows anything about it, I'd love to know, because I can't find anything on google about it... or why it was in my music folder of my installation. >.>'
@DAKherr Yeah man! It's from the community-made map 'Outback', for the assault gametype. That map is about some guys who assault a brewery which was taken over by some dudes and they took the alcohol out of the beer. It includes a 'version' of this song.
This song reminds me of the trips to town with my grandfather, stormy afternoons, and nights at grandparents which were sent listening to Slim Dusty songs. I haven't heard one in a few years it's good to hear one of his songs again.
Gordon Parsons was working as a cedar cutter south of Bellingen when he wrote this song during the war about the Cosmopolitan Hotel at Taylor's Arm, NSW. Perhaps influenced by Stephen Foster's song "Beautiful Dreamer" c1865 & inspired by a poem "A Pub without Beer" by Dan Sheahan, a cane farmer of Ingham, Nth Qld (originally from Ireland) about Day Dawn Hotel in Ingham,1943. Parsons was part of The Slim Dusty Show when Slim asked him if he could record it on a b side & it eventually took off!

First record I ever bought! Back when I was 10 years old. Still got it too.
My Mum and Dad thought I was daft: "What do you know about pubs?" they said.
I hadn't really thought him or the record for years until just moments ago.
Looking at Wiki, I see just how famous he was/still is.
