@MegaVergan Not exactly. There were three boxed sets of different colors back in the late '70's named D&D. By '79, the boxes were combined into books called AD&D. After that, 2nd edition occurred and expanded until the late '90's. This is where Dungeon's and Dragons ended. Gygax (original founder(s)) sold his rights. Then there happened a new game that took the old D&D name and applied it. This allowed the game lawyers open season on the game at the expense of creativity, imagination,&impulse
1st Edition AD&D was the best in my opinion. I think WotC should release all the original AD&D gamebooks and manuals in a boxed set...I"d buy it. Like a "retro-pack".
@ViralVideoCriticBeta I found a TON of the first edition books (including ones I used to have) at Half Priced Books. There were only a handful of issues about AD&D I didn't like i.e. how it takes almost a half an hour to shoot an arrow because you have all the realistic factors to roll on and take into play. I do agree tho, it was the best.
@dannyjingu The original AD&D was set up in such a way where you, as a DM, could bend the rules and change them as to fit with your own campaign. The rules in the original AD&D were set up as guidelines more than anything else. It felt more relaxed.
@ViralVideoCriticBeta That's awesome. I had a LOT of great times playing AD&D. I think it's the reason why I enjoy WoW so much (but only when my friends are on).
@ViralVideoCriticBeta I agree. I think there are two schools of thought on the game- Conservative (3-4e) and Liberal (1-2e). The game-lawyers who needed black and white thinking, and strict rules enjoy 3-4e, and the liberals who enjoy imagination, creativity, and impulsivness enjoy D&D and AD&D. May you never sneeze on a githyanki (FF).
@ViralVideoCriticBeta I agree, but I still have all my modules and books. I kept them down to half-a-dozen because I noticed when DM's I playe with had more, they spent most of the game-time with their nose in their different pedia's trying to impress me with their ability to have the information. I just left it up to the individual group when their wasn't a rule listed. It made for more fun, variety, and imagination. Thumb-up
@capie44 I know what you mean. I mean, the DM's word IS law, right? So, why wouldn't you want to put your imagination to work. I agree, a DM with his nosed buried in his various rulebooks trying to look up how the wind velocity and direction affects the fart of a player character in regards to his enemies around the bend detecting his party makes for a very boring game. I"d just wing it...rules be damned...lol
@ViralVideoCriticBeta They are putting out the core rule books for 1st edition by Gygax. They will be hard back with an old school look. They come out this year, and money will go to a Gygax memorial statue for each sale.
@tangentslayer Village of Hommlet was a great series! I still use it to introduce new gamers to AD&D. I am of the old school who thinks the game died when it went to Wizard's. I loathe it after that sell off.
@guidojacobs2002 try Troll Lord Games Castles & Crusades RPG - it is affordable, has a very retro style to it and is compatible with OD&D and AD&D - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
@spookiebernd - I cannot second this enough! Castles & Crusades is THE system you want to use if you want that classic OD&D/AD&D 1E feel but updated rules. Its compatible with every edition of D&D (except for 4th): OD&D, AD&D 1E, BECMI D&D, AD&D 2E, D&D 3.x, Hackmaster, Pathfinder and the whole host of Old School Renaissance clones!
What a pile of bullshit! I run two groups of players right now using 4th edition. None of them is younger than 25, most are 30-35. If you are too rigid to change stick to your old game, who cares.
@SnarlsAtFleas You're correct in the last sentence: "If you are too rigid to change stick to your old game, who cares."
Some people switched to 4th edition(or even Essentials now) for several reasons. Maybe they didn't like 3.x, feeling there was too much useless content. Maybe they wanted a more combat-based game using minis, which is a big focus in 4th ed. Maybe they just thought it was fun. Not ALL grognards hate it; they're fine(and quiet) where they're at. Also, much less bookkeeping.
Bah, 4E is not like old school D&D, anything pre-4E. Why does WotC try to market 4E as being anything remotely D&D? It's missing so much of what D&D was in its first 30 years
Great ad, harkens me back to when I was 10 years old getting my first basic set...very cool. Feels as though they are trying to get some older players back.
@SirCaptaincrunchy If WoTC wanted to get older players back, they should create a ruleset that appeals to older players, and not 4th edition, which appeals to12 year olds with short attention spans.
@diekluge Check out the Essentials line, they did a good job of making the game "adult" and got rid of the 12 year old WoW stuff, I hated 4e but they did a good job with the Essentials books.
@chris42576 the whole idea of essentials is to provide an entry point for the game to people outside the Friendly Local Game Store demographic, most of whom already know about D&D and know where to go to get it.

I'm sure it's been asked, but: what is the song on this video? I want to hear more!
