i'm surprised gretsch would put a 0th fret on their guitars any idea if that was malcom's idea? i hear it helps a lot with intonation and stopping fret buzz
I was lucky and tracked down a 2 pickup natural same as this just after they stopped production.I use an Orange dual terror and Orange square 4X12 ( ppc412 ) The tone makes me weep with pleasure.I am an ACDC nut and play in a covers band ( called ' Thunderstruckyork ' though we dont just play DC ) To here this miked up through front of house Pa loud is ' toneheavenoverload' for me.
@ykdickybill The Power of the Filtertron eh?. I bought an Electromatic, I ripped the stock pickups out and replaced the bridge with a Filtertron and Ive stripped the paint from it, sound a whole lot better now !!!
@Gritagris When it's cranked + Bass and Drums, it sounds huge. I hate modern amps and set-ups, they sound big and great in your bedroom, but small and muffled when you're with a band.
I use the Gretsch Malcolm Sig 1 HS Filtertron through a 1978 Marshall JMP 1/2 stack w/Presence = 0, Bass = 8, Mids = 5, Treble = 9 to 10, Gain = 8, Master = 10, into a Tom Scholz Power Soak and 6 dB cut. With the Power Soak you can turn the Master Vol. up to fully saturate the 6550 power tubes for moderately dirty gain and not blow people's heads off right in front of your Marshall 4x12 cab.
@KeeleyDub In Jan - March 2011 the largest Gretsch Dealer in the U.S. blew out Gretsch Malcolm 1 pickups on ebay for $1199 and 2 pickups for $1299. They sold about 28 during that period. Now used Malcolm Sigs in excellent condition are $1600 and even used ones that are beat to hell, are selling for $1000 to $1200. In England and Australia, Gretsch Malcolm Sigs are $2000 and up.
Thanks Mark. From your experience, what amp have you tried at Landers that best articulates Mal's tone? I ask because I have a Gretsch Firebird with a TV Jones Classic Plus in the bridge - Malcolm's guitar tech has been known to order this pickup for some of his guitars.
I'm using a Marshall VM 2266 Combo with JJ KT66's, but I'm always interested in hearing other people's experiences with different amps. Are there any you've played the Gretsch's through that made you say WOW? Thanks
@bongerbob From my experience I have found the Malcom Young sound is easiest to get from a Marshall JCM 800 ri on a low gain setting, other people may not agree but that works for me,I too have use the TV jones in my personal Gretsch.
I bought one of these last year!!! Loved the sound but I found it incredibly neck heavy. Very uncomfortable to play but then it's all personal preference isn't it!!!
I read somewhere on a webpage that these guitars are semihollow body and only weigh about 5 lbs.. Is that true? I have a Gretsch Double Jet with Badass bridge, Gretsch Electromatic Humbuckers, made in Korea back in 1998 and it weighs in at 10 lbs. and 3 oz. I'm used to really heavy Gibson Les Pauls and 5 lbs. just seens too light.
Very cool man! If I lived in Australia, I'd shop with you! Unfortunately, I'm in Virginia and we've got a Gretsch dealer here. But, for anyone in your neck of the woods who is interested, I've got this very guitar (in red) and it is one of the best instruments I've owned in 30 years of playing. Give Landers Music a call and check it out! You won't be disappointed. . .
theres a few Signature Angus SG models out there, 2 Malcolm Gretsch models, a Phil Rudd Signature Sonor Kit and snare, so is there a Signature Cliff Williams bass?
@dal3fan88 No, there isn't a Cliff signature. The Phil Rudd kit is a piece of shit (so I've been told) and doesn't cut it for a live band. They should go the whole hog with the Gretsch signature, two empty pick up holes, blocked off switches & minimal wiring.
I've decided: i'am gonna get an original 63- Jet Firebird in same colour as Malcolm had one day and modify it exactly like Malcolm did on his, best rythm guitar ever made imo :)
I have this guitar in Flamed Maple. Malcolm isn't satisfied with them, but they are actually great, they love to sing. The tone they produce is phenominal, a sort of smokey, mellow, chainsaw crunch that Mal is famous for. They are built extremely well too; solid, light, play like butter. Bottom line, best guitar I've ever played, hands down.
But, i personaly would want to obtain the exactly the same year model he used for the 70s album, modify it in the same way he did, same strings, e.t.c to get as close as possible, if that now is possible, an all original Gretsch, there is some feeling with old originals that modern made guitars simply doesnt have, but replicas/signatures are nice as hell also :D
I watched this a couple of days ago, and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since! Man - that sounds fuckin unreal! Its not the old Bon era sound - but you have come pretty darn close to the latest tone Malcolm has on Rock n' Roll Train album. Hey - don't play down your technique when you were playing R&R Train at the end, wow you really nailed the swing and groove that riff has - just like Malcolm. Can I buy that guitar from you? Nice vid!

The sound is just too thin. Don't know if it's the mic, maybe you aren't cranking the head, but the bass just isn't breaking.
