I am from California, and we have trains with drivers in the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) system in the San Francisco Bay Area. It seems like every other year or so the drivers go on strike, shutting down the entire system for a week or more. These driverless trains look pretty good to me.
Theres actually a computer room that has 3 Computer systems that control the trains. Each of them is called a VCC, one for each expo and millenium line and another for the yard rails. Theres also another system called the SMC that does the scheduling. The data gets to the train through 2 slippery coax cables which u can see on track that crosses every 20 meters and the VCC allows the train to go if clear. software is proprietary Alcatel boots from 1.44MB disketts and clustered IBM PC server.
just wondering, will the ICTS Mark I trains run until the end of time or will they be taken out of commission sometime soon? They're really getting quite old -.-
Only in Vancouver, do they really push this 30 year old technology. Notice in other parts of the world, they have moved from this to other, newer and better forms of mass people movement.
I wonder if Doug or his other counterparts actually use any of the TransLink services?
LOL The funny thing is BOTH Vancouvers were actually founded by the same person and both cities decided to name themselves after their founder. He Cpt George Vancouver in the middle 1800's. This is Vancouver British Columbia though. You know, home of the worlds warmest winter Olympics next week :P
@uniongrunt i know right. couldnt they just take vancouver washington to another place in the world like russia or europe? i dont understand that part
but thats always happening. Im sure in another 30 years san francisco will have some new system that makes vancouver's system look outdated. And then some other city's new system will make san fransisco look outdated. Its just an endless cycle.
LOL! "ding dong next station suicide bridge" and suicide bridge is a real station i was crossing the skytrain bridge and it stopped and said "ding dong next station suicide bridge" and and flung us in the fraiser river lol
in the video it says the electricity is from the 2 wire on the side. How does the trian get the electricity? Does the wires somehow connect to the metal thing in the middle of the track
you are right! the current comes form the wires and into the induction strip (metal plate in center of track) and the current moves the motors and the skytrain!
are u fucking kidding officials on the fucking train and theres no one person on it try rush hour when we have no fucking service at all fuck translink and get these over paid fucks outta office
The biggest SkyTrain danger isn't trains colliding or passengers standing too close to the edge, it's keener Translink cops tasering people for nothing more serious than being a suspected fare-jumper. What is it with Vancouver cops and tasers anyway? It's like their brains have mildewed in the sea air. And what does a fucking transit cop even need a taser for anyway? Every other jurisdiction in Canada manages to run their public transit quite fine without them.
I agree these people are nothing more than pseudo cops. they couldn't find a real job with the city police because of a poor attitude so became 'transit cops' instead. Jackasses!!
there are some very unstable people that ride those trains.. id want some kind of defence against them. all it takes is one junkie who feels cornered to stab u. and ur never there in numbers usually only 1 or 2 cops in an area to deal with it. tasers have been used thousands of times without issue. these people have familys, dont ask them to take risk to their lives because some idiot cant control his temper.
The old trains are going to be refurbished and kept in service till around 2040. Trains cost a lot of money and the Mark Is are classic so I hope they don't have to get rid of them anytime soon.

Skytrain is great. One problem: get rid of those old cars! They're so loud and shaky.

yes those old ones can be noisy but its just that they're old, i've been on them many times and i rlly use to the skakieness

What are the middle rails for on the Skybridge.
YALETOWNHOTEL 3 years ago
tahts for the big magnet on the skytrain's wheels so it stays on the track instead of slipping all of the place
cactuarizamoron 3 years ago
i think for the trains that only use one rail and i think older ones use 2
jonray107 3 years ago
No. I mean the rails between the tracks, on the Skybridge. 5:00
On the walkway that staff sometimes walk on there are rails but they are not part of the tracks the trains run on.
YALETOWNHOTEL 3 years ago
Please click, 5:09 , and then stop.
What are THOSE rails in front of those two people for.
YALETOWNHOTEL 3 years ago
thats used for maintanence crew to truck equipment back and forth on the bridge. its not connected to the skytrain line.
cactuarizamoron 3 years ago
I know it does not to the Skytrain system but those rails do have me curious. Does some other vehicle travel on there?
YALETOWNHOTEL 3 years ago
no.... no other vehicle runs on it except for other equipment for maintanence
