  • Love your playing! I have 2 Gibson electrics, a Howard Roberts(nice) and then I got a CS336(nicer). I play the CS336 all the time. I want to play All Blues like you do. Nice work!

  • your tone is sweet as honey...I guess it mellows your soul each time you pick a note!

    excellent playing!

  • Nice stuff man....

  • good job man, learning the tune and enjoyed your version

  • Great sound! This is exactly what I wanted to find and listen to. Just some soothing blues instrumental.

  • very nice guy. good groove

  • Is this the pure amp-sound of the express 5:25?

    Awesome

  • @eneXeon I was using a Fender Deluxe Reverb re-issue at the time with THD Yellowjacket tube adapters running EL-84s - supposedly biased to Class A operation. Also, I had a Weber Mini-mass attenuator taking the volume down by 6 db. The Express 5:25 sounds very similar, especially when it's running single ended at 5 watts.

  • Do you prefer your Deluxe Reverb or your Mesa 5:25 for clean jazz/blues tones?

  • @jkinzie20 The old Jazz players from the '60s to today mostly use Fender Reverb amps.

  • hats off! verrrry nice!

  • ES 339?

  • CS 336

  • cool! i didn't know godin made bass guitars, and cool ones at that!

  • Very nice!!!

    :-)

  • Nice idea, well performed and cool multiinstrumentalism - but the backing should be swing since you are playing it with swing eighths, or you could play it straight ...

  • thak you my guitar teacher gave me a scale to improv over it now i gatta kinda taste of it

  • Awesome!!! Thanks for postng.

    Grandma Mary

  • sorry i'm french so i speek like a frog but it's a nice piece that you played ! sure it's simple rythm but real good sound and video

  • nice..... but why not make the drums swing..... too straight mate

  • Superb!

  • Hey, kickass playing! That ES336 sure looks cute and sounds awesome

  • Your soloing is fun to listen to-its "everywhere"-but without falling out of the pocket. Forgive me if you've already adressed this somewhere, but how long have you been playing?

  • I've been playing for 32 years with varying degrees of interest. Playing more now than I have in a long time. Thanks for the comment - as a self taught player I sometimes wonder if what I'm playing makes any sense. ;-)

  • I think it makes amazing sense what your playing. I'm also trying to become a self taught guitar player. How and where do I learn? I especially love blues guitar. Would you have any other tips for me? Keep up the great work and keep uploading for all of us to enjoy please :)

  • Thanks for visiting and commenting. As far as tips go - one thing that worked for me was to work on visualizing the fingerboard - making charts of strings and frets and then mark all the notes for different chords, scales and arpeggios. You end up with a lot of charts but it helped me get out of position playing.

Also, listen to lots of slow blues as it's easier to hear what the musician is doing.

  • If you enjoy it it make all the sense in the world SO ENJOY IT TO THE BONE and dont think about it .

  • too much notes ! but interesting solo

  • how do you like the cs 336? im considering buying one. Your tone is superb!

  • The 336 feels good when you hold it and play it - it just feels alive - especially when things get a little louder. It's close in tone to a hollow body without the feedback issues. I'd been looking for a replacement for a Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion stolen a few years back and actually like the 336 even more. Play one first if you're thinking of buying - some people describe them as "spikey" or "plinky". Not sure why ....

  • wow

  • Ah, this is sweet. I love instrumentals of all kinds, but usually its hard to find anything worth a damn. I need music with tons of personality, and that's exactly what you've got here.. Love it! 5/5

  • W.uckinOW!!!

    Great phrasing and tone control..

    WOW

    WOW

  • Hey thanks! ... unless you're being sarcastic ... ;-)

  • No, sorry if I made that impression..I also play and like scofieldish way for hittin' outside tones and those quartal chords..I play IV of m.minor scale on C7... Im really impress..Stay well friend!

  • Awesome playing man. Beautiful 336, I recently ordered one and it getting built soon. It's arrival date is suppposed to be October 24. I'll probly watch your videos a ton untill it comes in. Thanks for posting this, and if your up to try posting some more videos with the 336.

  • I'm sure you'll be pleased when the 336 arrives. I looked at mine on the wall at the local music store for about six months before taking the plunge. I wish I'd grabbed it earlier!

  • Chris, I really don't mean to fawn, but it's hard not to........... you have a distinctive style that's all your own, and tasty as anything I've ever heard............. great stuff, ...... just great!

  • I'm blushing! Yours and Joe's comment below make it feel like I should keep playing. Thanks.

  • definitely keep playing man you're great! :-)

  • unbelievable approach! nice laid back feel. the balance between idomatically familiar themes and quirky unique phrasing is refreshing.

you have amazing touch and dynamics with your left hand. this is what a guitar player should sound like.

  • reading through the other comments, what do you mean by the 336 being "its harder to control" i dont quite understand what you mean by that, is it unbalanced, or is it more of a tone thing when playing? also if you would be so kind i'm seriously considering a 336 what is your overall opinion of it thanks!

  • The 336 does have a center block but it stops right behind the bridge so the top behind the bridge responds like a carved archtop. So, it has a lot of dynamic range - much more than a solid body. If you're playing clean tones, no overdrive, it takes some work to get control of the dynamics. Notes really jump out if you don't pick smoothly. But, once under control, it feels way more alive. I would try to play one or two before deciding on it as they're not cheap!

  • nice solo! did you use blues scale or major scale or? thanks!

  • Although it's a blues, it can be interesting if you take a modal approach. Over the G major I used mainly the G mixolydian mode with some altered scale tones at times (b9 and #9). Over the C7/Gmi I used the G dorian mode. For the turnaround (D7#9 to Eb7#9) there's a nice scale based around a diminished chord. If you start on D it goes half tone / whole tone through the whole scale: D Eb F F# Ab A Bb C D. That scale gives you most of the chord tones for both chords including the altered 9ths.

  • Great stuff! Love your videos. And the ES 336 looks like a great guitar - seems pretty uncommon and hard to find. I'd love to see more videos showing off the ES 336 and what sounds it can create.

  • Thanks for the kind words.

The 336 is a Custom Shop guitar so they don't build as many as other models. They've built a few variations - the most recent being the Kiefer Sutherland KS 336. Because it's a solid wood archtop it has greater dynamic range than a solid body and is really fun and reactive to play. I'm still getting the hang of it as it is harder to control than a Strat or Les Paul.

  • Excellent. I need that bass.

  • The Godin bass is a sweet instrument. I wish I could play it like it deserves!
