@Deer08Slayer - Hey there. I think they are big and heavy compared to some of new technology out there. For the same price you can pick up a low profile round baitcaster and it will fit in your hand much better and have better technology in it. Just my opinion. I used to use the barrel style Abu Garcia reels when I was in high school (10 years ago) but today I don't see any reason to buy one of those over a normal baitcaster. Good luck fishing!

I agree 100% with everything here...all these things he's mentioning are things that you just naturally learn with experience while using a baitcasting rig...you still need a spinning rod around for certain applications (that plastic worm/lizard setup for a missed topwater strike, etc.) but personally, I use baitcasting rigs about 95% of the time...takes awhile to get used to the feel and operation of one...it's almost its own artform...but its entirely worth becoming fluent with a baitcaster
One tenth is not too bad. Most guys backlash a little all day long. Here are some things to try until you get more used to controlling the spool with your thumb...
Hey Smiley I just got a baitcaster not too long ago and spooled on 14 lb line. I noticed 1/10 casts a backlashed occured and the gear was 4. Baitcaster is only 4 ball bearings but as new as I am to baitcasters, I was wondering what would you recommend for me? Thanks.
nice vid!! im new to fishing and just bought a rod and reel. my friend suggested and i bought a shimano compre spinning rod. medium with very fast tip line rating 6-12lbs. and a shimano sahara 2500fd reel. did i buy the wrong setup? should i have gotten a baitcaster?? and shouldi still go out and a buy a baitcaster? i heard to cover all types of bass fishing you need 3 rod and reel setups. is that true?
hey smiley what would be a good baitcaster to get but i dont know because ive won about 23 youth tourments and im 14 now.what would be a good pro pole for any price
@SYRACUSELAX091. Abu Garcia makes some great starter baitcasting reels. Check out TackleWarehousedotcom. Dobyns Rod Savvy Series is a great starter rod. 703 or 733 is a great one to start with that does a lot.
im 17 and i've used a baitcast for about a year now and i dont feel the same using anything else, i absolutely love them and im really good at presentation and quiet presentation. i heavely recommend one to anyone, they're not as hard as most people think =) great vid
Hey man. I'm posting a video soon on Baitcasting 101. It has some good tips that will help you sewell. In a nutshell, I'd make sure you have at least a 1/4oz weight and have a med action rod...a heavier rod will make it very hard to cast probably. See the video for more tips bud. You can subscribe to my videos and you'll get it emailed to you. Thanks for the question. All the best, James

What would be a good baitcasting rod and reel to start out with that doesn't cost too much and is good quality?

@smileyj206
Try a heavier lure or add weight to the one you're using.
If you have a drag dial on the side of the reel opposite the handle, turn that one higher.
Tightened the spool tension which is just under the handle; round knob. Only tighten slightly and try casting again.
Good luck. Try not to get frustrated. It happens to everyone until you get more use to it buddy.
