  • Brava:D♥

  • I agree. this women has the voice of god

  • No one can sing this aria like Angela :) Just my opinion!

  • oooo...lovely pianist at beginning. Anyone know who she is???

  • excellent

  • a great singer!!! i love her so much

  • Very beautifully sung! Love it.

  • I love you, ANGELA!

  • The greatest opera star signs my favorite piece..

  • The greatest star sings my favorite piece.

  • Is just a dream within a dream!

  • stă acolo in vazul tuturor deschisa la mirifica muzica, ne explica totul prin fiecare respiratie, gest, nota si unii, totusi, nu pricep si pace

  • @1Profion asa e...asa am zis si eu intotdeauna...

  • Love that pianist accompaniment ... gentle ... patient.

  • God shes incredible. One word: Orgasm.

  • This woman surprised God when she began to sing as a child.

  • @SnoozeButton57 I don't doubt it!!!

  • Saw her sing this in concert live and we didnt recognize the name, but when the piano started everyone went "Oh!" And she gave us 5 encores. It was superb, and she was really nice when I met her and stayed about 4 hours after the show to make sure everyone who wanted an autograph got one, and the show didn't even end until like 11 p.m.

  • Angela's voice glimmers with the Italianate flavor I prefer to hear, and she performed beautifully, even thought she wasn't in rarest form vocally speaking. To be able to sing this composition well is a true test of the soprano's technique and vocal gifts.

  • beautiful fresh sound , young and very expressive,on this recording.

  • love her...but leontyne sounds much better..

  • My Favourite peice of Opera.... And Angela is awesome singer :-)

  • Touching song and voice, thank you Angela ... greetings from Romania

  • i wonder how someone can even sing this

  • nice job.!

  • This was not her best performance. She looked relieved to have it over. I'm sorry for those who love her but she knew this wasn't her best. If you don't want to hear criticism buy the recording or dvd. Don't come on these sites attacking those who have differing opinions.

  • i love angela gheorghiu!

  • Absolutely stunning rendition!

  • Stunning.

She reminds me of Callas, she has a certain operatic swagger that is wonderful, full of personality. Perfect beautiful voice.

  • Such a beautiful aria! I want to hear Anna Netrebko sing this..

  • @Suvihe me too!

  • well im relatively new to opera. cant examine it from a technical stand point... how ever, to the novice ear... its food. but im not full! this is the first time ive followed this aria on youtube... and already, Leontyne has spoiled me rotten!

  • @beginagain314 love love love Angela but she just doesn't get that soaring quality on those hight notes like La Price

  • I once saw another video of Gheorghiu singing this aria when she was much younger, does anyone knows wheres is it?

  • she has a beautiful voice but she rushes through everything...same with her Traviata..not enough emotion...loks and sounds too affected..jmho...no disrespect intended.

  • @jgdmol4l Another armchair quarterback! If you can't say something nice STFU.

  • @4drcoop armchair quarterback?? wtf?? like I said, I meant no disrespect I was just expressing my honest opinion which I am entitled to just as you are entitled to disagree...but telling me to STFU is just rude. Its only a comment, so chill. Either way it doesnt change anything, its just an opinion.

  • @jgdmol4l Your uneducated comment and poor choice of words holds the potential to do damage to the reputation of this great artist. Not everyone reading this forum understands it is open public commentary and your frivolous review could be mistaken as that of a professional. I stand by my original reply to you.

  • @4drcoop lol good for you then ;)

  • @jgdmol4l @jgdmol4l Another armchair quarterback! If you can't say something nice STFU.

  • This interpretation is the one most like Anna Moffo's...the definitive version...diction almost the same.

  • @puccinislarondine

In my opinion,Luba Orgonasova´s version is the best.

    sf

  • @puccinislarondine You´d better phone your bank manager; you´re seriously in the red!

  • This is what is wrong with YouTube--- I put a sincere, honest opinion, and it basically gets removed as "spam" because other's disagree. I could see it if I posted something objectionable or profane- but the truth is, I can't stand the way she sings this aria. It's not because of any disposition toward the performer, it's because her diction is horrible, she sings flat and her affectations while singing are beyond annoying, they're insincere. This is my favorite opera but not AG's performance.

  • @puccinislarondine

Bravo! Veramente molto molto mediocre questo

    "Sogno di Doretta".

  • hanssach100, grazie- tu sei molto gentile e una persona onesta. :)

  • @puccinislarondine Too bad we can't hear your rendition.

  • @puccinislarondine Too bad we can't hear your rendition.

  • @4drcoop I did have a rendition of this when I was younger that was quite nice- however that cassette has long been lost in a move- and yes, I did used to sing opera- this is my favorite opera so I am VERY familiar with ever note and nuance. I've seen your previous comments so I know that you believe that expressing an opinion that this isn't the best rendition ever is some kind of liable. She's lovely to look at, but her rendition is affected, under-pitch and lacking real finess.

  • Brilliant! Maybe Price's was slightly better.. but I think Gheorghiu makes a better overall performance.. and I can detect some Bartoli-esque mannerisms here..

  • I love her in this song!!!! she sings like an angel!!!!

I don't like the rendition of this aria.... not a particular fan of Angela but I have to admit that sometimes she's good.... however not here.... Caballe is divine in this aria... and not a fan of Caballe either !!

  • @drifter949

    Try Luba Orgonasova´s version.

    Ciao

    sf

  • AG has always been one of the greatest performers of this aria today. I don't know why some people say she is bad here. Obviously they have a bad disposition against her. Brava Angela!

  • I really agree this woman is very good.

  • Devia has a great high voice, but a deficient middle voice, so her Puccini's aren't her best (Liu, Musetta, Magda...), but belcanto. So she is not a good example for this aria. Instead listen Price, Moffo, and today Gheorghiu. However, in this occasion she was not so good, there are better renditions of Gherghius Doretta in youtoube.

  • Oh my gosh she is so under pitch on her high notes....

  • Price is the best!

  • ..divina Gheorghiu

  • She is incomparable in this role, it so much suits her, had the chance of seen her live and it is absolutely undescribable!

  • She has intonation problems, especially in the higher register...or on crescendos.

  • buona interpretazione voce non eccezionale.Nel complesso e' godibile.

  • I know she is difficult, but in my opinion her rendition of this aria is the best on YouTube!!

  • cannot agrre more!

  • Why do I fell the high C a little bit out of tune?

BRAVA GHEORGHIU

  • she was just perfect in this role last night at the met

Bella voz, bella mujer!!!

  • She's beautiful and has both the look and timbre of the perfect Magda. Here unfortunately she's short of breath, some low notes are in the breast, movements and facial mannerism are not nice to look at.

  • I have no idea what you mean about movement and mannerism. I found it nice to look at. As far as the singing is concerned, I suppose we can all have an off day.

  • Great but had higher expectations... her ebben and donde lieta are much, much better... Sogno did not inspire me as much. Let's give her a break.. she may have had a bad hair day when she sang this song :)

  • Exactly! You couldn't have said it better! People just take mediocrity and call it brilliant these days!

  • You're welcome, my friend.

  • I love your appraisal! The sound is thin, wobbly and notes are neither supported nor sustained. Breaks replace transitions. And I agree with you that the fault, dear brutes, lies with the audience!

  • wow! I thought I was critical! I suppose you think Michelangelo's painting of the Sisteen chapel looks like it was done with a roller brush, that Einstein was a bit of a dunce and Mozart wrote fiddly tunes that a 5 year old could do? No offence.

  • not bad, but I prefer other Magda

  • Technically Gheorghiu is perfect, no complaint from me on that. But the legato just doesn't do it for me. I didn't feel much emotion from her, she was just hitting the notes. Maybe I was just spoiled by Price's sexy legato and pianissimo.

  • Don't feel bad, most of us have been spoiled by Price's version. After first hearing this I feel I was even a little too generous to Gheorghiu. Many singers from A. Rothenberg to Fleming to Dorothy Kirsten to Moffo has performed this much better.

  • I wil just say this thing which to some of you may seem unfair BUT the american public is so very different from the european one in terms of opera music, as it regards this aria I this the Leontines Price version is exceptional for the american public as for Angela Gheorghiu's I find it perfect in terms of singing and acting but more then this in terms of european rafinament , style and exquisite interpretation of the role.Best regards!

  • This by no means her best rendition of this aria, but it's definitely not as terrible as some here think. Leontyne Price is incredible, but the character is not there, only the notes. With Gheorghiu, you get both.

  • you know, she's good, but it just is not doing anything for me.

  • I like this song, I think every artist, from Kiri to Leontyne to Callas to even this young lass, brings a little something to the table in putting it out there. It's hard as hell to sing--I'd love to see the "This SUX" critics post their video of themselves, showing us all how to do it.

We'll be waiting a long time, I'm guessing.

  • Please listen to Price's Version.

  • Here is a great performer - an artist.

  • Miss Callas wobble was present way before her 50's. How about the late 30's.

  • shut up. you're stupid and you know nothing, and you haven't heard ANY of her old recordings if you're saying that. how stupid are you? she has absolutely no wobble, and in the 30's she was a teenager, and that's impossible to have a wobble as a teenager as she hadn't sung anything totally huge until she was suor angelica at 16.

  • what is your problem. Obviously you live throught singers and never will be one yourself. yopu would not hae time to send these many messages about singers if you were any kind of singer were their salt. THIS KIND OF NAME CALLING, "STUPID" is incalled for.

What I meant was that Callas in the 1950's had a pronounced wobble and it was there while she was in her 30's.

  • why are you so mean to people dude..it is not that serious...you need to calm down. Its great to admire the talents of opera singers but you really should respect the opinions of others..you come across as an American Idol groupie...Calm the hell down!

  • She's got a lovely voice - and, unfortunately, I have to comment:

She's the thinnest soprano I think I've ever seen.

    Interesting.

    But a beautiful soprano, yes.

I hope to see this opera soon.

  • she's actually not that thin looking in person.

  • I had the opportunity to meet her person. She is actually really tall (like 5'8 to 5'9) and VERY shapely. Hips and Boobs, everything. She is a gorgeous woman although she did look a little hard in the face.

  • she would never shag you, hard face or not, ugly!

  • what does you mean?

  • no she probably wouldnt but ur mom would..loser

  • Angela Gheorghiu is one of the best sopranos of our time, if not "the" best.

  • yes she is! do you know you can see her and Roberto in La rondine at the cinema on Saturday 19th Jan, broadcast live from the met! Cineworld in the uk are doing it ant I would think it is being broadcast elsewhere.

  • She was in the cinema today Sat 10th 2009

not the 19th. and she was so good.

  • Sat. Jan. 19th 2009

  • She did this opera on Sat. Jan 10th not the

29th so why am i gitting (poor comment)on this ???????

  • my appologies JasonDavis1960, that was a typo about the 19th, I of course meant the 10th, I went to see it, it was amazing.

I dont know why somebody gave me a thumbs down as it was a typo and I was just trying to let people know it was comming up, a simple google search would have given correct date! just a heads up!!!!!!

  • I love her voice but in every performance she has several flat notes.

  • Actually a few of those notes sounded sharp to me, not flat.

But - I've never heard the song before, so I wouldn't know.

  • What a bunch of culture snobs. Go deliver your pizzas. they're getting cold and you won't get a tip.

  • Spoken like a true Irish idiot.

  • I like the Amsterdam version better. Great singer. What an amazing group of fans. Some comments cross the line. She doesn't need it. She speaks for herself singing.

  • First of all, I don't wanna hurt anyone's feellings. She sings gracefully. She has a nice voice. But the song is not quite right for her. She do not master the high notes of this song. Please listen to Ainoa Arteta to understand the sweetness the song asks in the high notes. Most of all, I suppose she was sick or with some kind of problem this special day because the last note is out of picth, really. I guess this was not a fortunate night.

  • i doubt you truly know anything about opera, much less what you're talking about, since your favorites consist of rock music and 70s/80s crap. so let me inform you: this song is great for her, and her interpretation of this song is acclaimed by many. and she DOES master teh high notes of this song! just because they are soft, it doens't mean she doesn't have them, the music SAYS for those notes to be pp (pinanissimo). and she wasn't sick. she is wonderful, and you have no place to say anything.

  • Bah! You are crazy! I've NEVER heard anyone do this piece as well as she does. Your precious interpretation by Ainoa doesn't even come close. I'm sorry I just can't agree with you on this one.

  • You haven't heard the great Leontyne Price do it then. Look up her performance from 1968 and weep.

  • Agreed- her recorded version is sublime too.

  • her performance of this aria in her 1962 carnegie hall recital debut is pretty awesome too... it's on itunes somewhere.

    BRAVA. BRAVISSIMA.

  • Too much vibrato.

  • you "LizN90" are so ignorant, you don't know anything about good singing, this woman is absolutely fantastic.

  • I agree with Tenochispano. It's really very stunning. I very much enjoy her unique approach to the aria. They all tend to do it like Caballé, but this is very different. A breath of fresh air.

I must say if you love this aria you must hear Scotto's

  • you are right

  • yeah really, vibrato is natrual. you're probably some choir singer who knows nothign about real music and thinks vibrato is controlled. is you're holding back your vibrato you're not singing properly. seriously, learn something real about music besides the crap you think you know. UGH people like you are so fucking annoying, cause you know nothing. just shut up, especially if everyone around you loves the video.

  • Well actually I don't sing at all. But I don't like this that much. I prefer Te Kanawa's version.

  • ...if you don't sing, then why do you think you know what you're talking about enough to say she's using too much vibrato? wow, you make sense.

  • hear hear!

  • I actually can't think of someone else performing better "Chil bel sogno" than her today around. She has the perfect vocal format for it and the color is exquisite. Her rendition in front of Queen Beatrix is even better : more shimmering and floating. We could dream of even more pp on the high C and high Bf like on her studio recording, but she's live here and the stress is not to help ! But I would nuance your assertions on the vibrato : an exhaustion of the vocal chords and a shallow diaphragm

  • I can, Mattila and SHE is in tune!

  • lead to wobble and a wider vibrato. That's what sometimes happen to singers reaching the end of their career.

  • end of their career? callas had a wobble, yet her vocal chords were in perfect shape. t's stress that affects the chords, but when you sing you take PERFECT care of them, especially with opera. contemporary music causes actual chord damage. and gheorghiu is 42... she's at the height of her career.

  • Reading you, I can't state wether you agree with me or not LOL. In fact, there are many causes of wobble : too heavy a repertoire that solicits too much the diaphragm for instance and the wear-out of a long career. But I think, if I undesrtand well, we both didn't notice any abnormal wobble in Angela's voice. As for Callas', it didn't appear till the late 50s. After her Anna Bolena, let's say, being severe.

  • I had only heard a few times about her. I didn't know she was so good. I like her.

  • Que belleza!!!!...que musicalidad y que gran artista!.

    Personalidad!, personalidad!, personalidad!...

  • Saw her sing this recently at the SF Opera and she was wonderful. What a treat. Thank you for sharing this with us

  • I did too! = )

she was great, better than this performance right here

  • completely does, in this aria it agree superb, damage that it sings if little on scene and that it records much... odd not?

the only time where I had the occasion to hear it on scene, all the program had been changed at the last time and I found myself in front of a schoolgirl

  • Angela most definitely owns this aria. Nobody can sing it this good. However, IMHO she's not at her best standards in this video. There is a video of her in Amsterdam where she sang this same aria a bit better.

    Thank you Alice!

  • I think she is pretty good in this aria. She does wierd things with volume, loud at points where it seems she should be softer. Soft at times when she should be a bit louder. The ending is great. I just have a hard time accepting any version other than Leontyne Price on the blue album that is amazing.

  • Oh my gosh, Ms. Price's is great! But listen to Leona Mitchell sing it. WHEW!!

  • Very nice. I am working on this aria. Hope can sound half as good.

  • I wish you all the joy singing this beautiful piece - I can only listen with joy.

  • This is a glorious version of this aria!

Everyone please take a look on Iwona Sobotka's version of this aria, it's really awesome in my opinion aswell !

  • her best performance of this aria was in Amsterdam that same year. it's on the same account as the user who posted this! aaahhh her voice....so crystal clear!

  • I'm still looking for this "weird uncomfortable" vibratto... In my view she's just great.

  • Very, very expressive and profissional her "typical body language of a student during a technical lesson".

Please, she's simply a GREAT singer, especially in this aria.

  • Great aria! This is easily one of my favorites. Depsite what monteviena says, I think she does well. Sometimes the face and the gestures go against what the lyrics say, but in the voice, I hear everything that the Puccini wanted. I especially appreciate her not backing away from the the 'high note' it seems like everyone does that, but not this singer, it gave so much more to the aria! Lovely!!!

  • Her vibratto is so wierd, and the voice sound in gola at time,a bit uncomfortable to listen to.Her body language is typical of a student during a technical lesson.

  • I love Gheorghiu in this aria. Brava!
