My confusion at Americanisms aside, that's a hell of a wierd guitar. How does it play and sound? Also, how heavy is that thing? I know Aluminium is a light metal, but that much of it must weigh a ton.
@killpopstudio Yes, Lexan. It's similar to plexiglass but made from polycarbonate rather than acrylic. It's a little more durable. You can get small Lexan sheets at places like Lowes.
@theshyguitarist I laughed when I saw your comment but if you're being serious, my apologies. It never even occurred to me to put a sacrificial anode in the guitar since alum is usually an anode itself. I'm not sure that it would benefit anything. Aluminum forms a thin layer of aluminum oxide when protects it from corrosion for many years. If it dulls, I'll buff it up but honestly, I'll be long dead & gone before the guitar would corrode. The next guy will have to worry about it! Thanks!
@jazzbo89 Yes. I was joking. There are all aluminum saltwater boats that require a zinc block that actually prevents the saltwater from corroding the hull. Otherwise, the boat would pretty much disintegrate. I'm wondering if a small zinc anoded glued inside would prevent even the tarnishing...might be worth looking into.
I know this is a year later...can't believe I missed your response. Yeah...I was partly kidding. It's a very different looking kind of guitar for sure. ; )
I was just reading comments about Travis Beans going out of tune alot due to the aluminum reacting to temperature changes. How's your guitar fare. Did Veleno's have this issue?
Yes, mine also goes out of tune due to temperature impact. Not just from hot stage lights either. The heat transfer from your hands moving all over the neck for 10 minutes or so knocks it out of tune a little. It eventually settles down as the temperature stabilizes.
This pickup is not hot at all. It sounds very similar to Lace sensor type pickups in that it has a very flat transparent response but this model reportedly has a wider band response. Great for guys who want to craft their tone using pedals and/or a specific amplifier's unique nuances. Since it doesn't really provide any color of its own, it really picks up the unusual sound of the aluminum guitar body. These things are dead quiet, too.
No truss rod needed since the neck doesn't flex. Re: tarnish, since the body is not chromed like most real Velenos, the aluminum will likely dull somewhat over time. It hasn't yet and it's fairly easy to buff back up to a mirror shine if a person is so inclined. The headstock makes a great can opener, too.
Dig your Veleno tribute! I myself have a New Veleno (#207) built by John Veleno in 2005. I did have a vintage (#70) back in 1998 that I bought from a guy in New York. I too first saw the Veleno guitar when I saw Grand Funk on their Shinin' On tour in '74. I also have a 1968 Messenger with built in distortion, 1970 Micro-Frets Signature in ruby red and a 1977 Gibson L5S in cherry burst. Yep, I'm a HUGE GFR & Mark Farner Fan. Keep it Shinin' On, brother!

Anyway, that's certainly something different. Looks amazing.

Take a listen to the Climax Blues Band with Pete Haycock on a Veleno to hear that great aluminum sound!

Nice guitar. Around how much do these sell for?

Geez. With all that aluminum, I hope you installed a zinc block to prevent corrosion.
