I agree with you that Letterman is only guilty of stupidity. I also ask myself why he would jeopardize his career, his reputation, and his family's peace of mind. He was imprudent. But I still love the guy. Like you said neither he nor Jay Leno were probably at the top of their class in school , but they have become enormously wealthy and famous by telling silly jokes. That's America. They are living their own version of the American dream.
