His ammo HUD is like the pyro, where it's more "200 units," as he's actually firing about 4 bullets per round (try this in-game, see how many holes are in the wall after tapping the button.) He's holding about 800 bullets (4 bullets per ammo unit), and you can keep firing indefinitely next to a dispenser or a supply cabinet, suggesting that he can hook the gun to a longer belt with a lot more ammo than Heavy usually carries around.

I use the Invisiwatch and all the other default weapons. I have a total of 1,400+ hours in game and don't agree with you saying spy is unimportant. BTW, my KDR as spy is 7.11. (a little over 7 kills per life on average) and my highest killstreak is 64 on Gravelpit as a spy. So do not say a spy is useless. They are far from it.
