how can i format my whole pc and install the cd? i have to install it from desktop cuz i cant set boot priority to cd. when i do that i get a w7 screen only... or does the installer format ur pc?
@LollipopHouser Ya know, this was just an FYI to show people the process... if you don't have anything to say then not saying anything would have been the better idea!
@dadslad125 Essentially the differences are that the "retail" has a warranty direct from MS and can be transferred between computers under certain circumstances. OEM has a warranty from the company you buy it from, and usually cannot be transferred except under "extreme" circumstances. Oh, and the OEM is usually cheaper...
@neugenmgm so do i go for the Windows & OEM version or the full retail version for an extra £30? I have been told that the OEM version is a 1 install copy and can only be installed on 1 motherboard, is this correct?
@neugenmgm Actually retail is a better deal considering OEM versions of windows are limited to being installed ONCE on ONE motherboard while retail versions can be installed infinitely on new systems.
Did you just install this by putting the disc in and following the on screen instructions? I read somewhere that you need to install something prior to this...
I'm confused! Lets say that I bought a new laptop that comes with Windows 7 64-bit and I was stupid enough to install Windows 8 Developer Preview over it and now I can't access my Windows 7. Can I use the OEM version instead of the retail one? and If I do install it on my computer will I lose anything that came with the computer?
Please have in mind that I did not upgrade my computer in anyway.
I fucked up my Asus G74sx laptop....yeah! I know. You can fell sorry for me, because I do too
@B0fura If I understand you right, yes you can use the OEM to "re-install windows 7. But, all your old information would have been deleted if you did a full install of the win 8 beta... you would have kept your data if you had done an upgrade, at this point your old data is gone and not too much you can do to get it back...
i have a question i have the oem disc and i already activated one pc but can i use the same disc to install windows 7? i know im gonna get the its not genuine thing but will the disc work to install windows 7?
@points2shopPROOF Yes you can, but you won't be able to activate it unless you call microsoft and tell them you had a major motherboard failure and had to replace it... then they may deactivate the old serial and give you a new one... that's what they did for me.
@dylanm36 no, not really, it actually has a few things taken out that the home version has... also I don't believe the ultimate version is worth it either, unless you actually need all the extra security stuff it has...
A MAJOR difference between Win7 Home and Win7 Pro is that Microsoft support for Win7 Home versions ends Jan2015, whereas it ends Jan2020 for Win7 Pro versions (and Enterprise versions). That's 3 more years of support vs. 8 more years of support. So you have to decide if you need update support for more than 3 years.
OEM versions are "locked" to one PC install, minor upgrades like RAM, Hard Drive, Video are allowed but any major upgrades or changes to the system (like a M/B upgrade) will cause you to have to get a new serial from MS before you can activate on the "new" system...
@neugenmgm Not entirely true if you register your copy on Windows. I own an OEM version and had to have my MB serviced, I got a replacement and I gave Microsoft a call and let them know about the change, and it activated just fine.
@neugenmgm I bought computer components and am building it. I accidentally bought OEM windows 7 professional, and can't return it. Can you help me install it? I would really appericiate it.
Hey, could someone help me out? I'm thinking to upgrade my mobo, cpu and ram but also wanna upgrade to windows 7 from xp. Should I upgrade the mobo first and then buy an upgrade pack, or upgrade windows 7 first? btw I'm not sure if i still have my xp activ. code

Remember one thing: With a OEM version Windows 7 will be linked to your motherboard. You can't install it onto other pc's or laptops and if you upgrade your motherboard you will need a new OS.
OEMs are great. Only problem is you can't transfer, if you upgrade your motherboard. But it doesn't matter, because you can sell OS with the motherboard anyway, then use the money to buy a new OEM windows for your new board
@neugenmgm Does that mean that if I buy an OEM windows 7 I can install it on a self-build pc and it is still gonna have all possibilities like the retail version?
@STRIKA007 the OEM version is what, for instance HP would buy when installing windows 7 in thousands of computers. the OEM version is $100 cheaper, doesn't come in a fancy box ( comes in a brown cardboard box) and does not include instructions on how to install. After seeing this video it's pretty easy as you can see but if your upgrading you should check out the windows 7 website They call it the full version and OEM but they are both the same.
Hey, I recently built my first computer (w00t! It works!), and I've been thinking about getting windows 7, and want to get the OEM version due to the lower price. After research, I found that you aren't technically allowed to run it on your own computer.

@HaavardGY OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. It is meant for companies like Dell who install the OS (Operating System) on the computers before shipping them to customers. System Builders also use them. It is exactly the same as a regular install, except that it must be a clean install (empty hard drive) and it doesnt come with a lot of documentation.
@HaavardGY Virtual PC's must use 32-bit not 64-bit even if you have a 64-bit PC you must still install 32-bit for virtual PCs because virtual PCs can only run at 32-bit. OEM is exactly the same as the full retail copy so buy the 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium OEM and you'll be fine.

arent you supposed to set up a partition in the video i didnt see this? i just wanted to know if when installing windows 7 that it makes a partition deleting ALL information and previous partitions and reformating the hard drive completely, thats what i would want it to do.
I got Window 7 Professional and Window 7 OEM Disk.
which should i use? OEM or Win 7 PRO?
im confused now -_- and now im using Window XP Professional SP3.
