But it's really a shame that all the great advancements in human pioneering at that time was just driven by war and rocket tests. By the time we go to Mars in person we should have changed.
I'm rather dubious about saying this, but it says something about America when space exploration is only seriously considered while we're at war. That violent time set a very bad precedent, and we need to stop attributing it to the cold war.
@BikiniDeathSquad The Van Allen radiation belt is just a concentration of solar wind.. it's not anything really special. The conspiracy theories about the moon landing really don't hold up. Especially since you can literally point radio waves @ a designated point on the moon where NASA put their receiver & get a comprehensive signal back. That's pretty concrete.
thanks a lot for the post, very enlightening .... and i totally agree with you cosmos on the distorted argument. Knowledge is Power. Ignorance is for Cowards.
@candymagic68 Sad, too. Because anyone can shoot a well aimed laser at the moon, hit the mirror set up by Apollo, and get some of the light reflected back. That wouldn't be possible if they weren't there.
One of the great problems of explaining discovery is we can read it in books, we can show pictures and video, we can talk at length about the science, but until we actually see it for ourselves, in person, it's not fully real to us.
@kaimialana Saturn, for example. I saw pictures for years, but it wasn't until I set up my first telescope and pointed at that bright yellow light, that the ringed planet drifted into view and became real for me. It was, as Feynman put it, "all really there".
@kaimialana Oh hell yes! I damn near flipped out with excitement knowing I could actually SEE the gaps between the planet and it's rings. I lost it so hard right then and there.
@DamienZshadow Seriously one of the coolest things I've ever seen in person. Along with the Hercules cluster, the Pleides, and the Orion Nebula, in terms of astromonical objects.
@kaimialana The Orion Nebula is quite entrancing. I have to say my most greatest experience would have to be seeing the Milky Way galaxy in it's clearest possible view from the deserts of Jordan while I was visiting family. We went out to camp with Bedouins and when the sun set my jaw fell with it. It was the most breath taking experience to see the giant band of gas and stars stretch from one horizon to the next. My back was plastered into the sand unable to wrench my eyes away!
With a trillion dollars you could own and operate your own space program with an annual budget of $20 billion for the next 50 years. That’s $2 billion more than NASA spends each year. We should take the money we are spending on pointless wars and give that to NASA, maybe then we will return to the America we once were.
Im with Tyson, but America this America that is a dead nationalistic elixer that he wants to drink. Nationalistic sentiments are meaningless when considering the advancement of our human species.
@SorenHume Good point. If the USSR and the USA had collaborated instead of turning space exploration into a pissing contest we'd probably have been to Mars by now.
im tired of being forced to pay for things i dont want...there should be a country where people can go to, and be safe from the intrusion, theft, and violence of their neighbors...isnt there any country that prohibits the slavery of its citizens? early american independence was on the right track, but it soon became the land of tyranny again...i hope an asteroid wipes you all out, and i can repopulate the earth with the last 10 women..even my inbred kids would do better than you all have
@longfootbuddy If people didn't wish certain doom upon others, a lot of the stuff you are paying for would go away... Your rant is a distilled version of the weakness of our kind that burdens others, in other words, you seem to be the typical problem you are trying to avoid...
@REXVS i only wish the destruction of those that wish to enslave me, or burden me, as you put it.. according to your weak logic, a dog must be beat because it attacks you when its beat...a man must be jailed because he resists being jailed.....fuck you, you dim witted jackass
@longfootbuddy Having slumped to insults proving impatience and to unrelated conclusions showing disregard for other's attempts to discuss; I'll have to simplify my 'rant' so it could be understood properly. Wishing upon destruction of anyone is beating the dog, your logic leads to a chain of dogs beating other dogs without understanding or reason. To loose all burden one must work to elevate all to a level where those burden you no longer, not simply wipe them out.
If we raise a bunch of athiest kids on Mars, do you think the fundies will put up money to preach the gospel to them? Could that speed up space travel?
Money is all that matters in our day and age... Acquiring money regardless of what it costs. We as a species have sold our souls to it for a long time now. Very saddening.

@cosmos11 NOT ONLY THAT BUT WHEN I STUDY NATURE, AND ESPECIALLY DNA I CAN'T HELP BUT BELIEVE IN GOD. TO ME THE EVIDENCE THAT HE EXISTS IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY FACE.
@RespectMyHate Do you see your god when you look at how DNA causes birth defects in children like Spina bifida, Cleft lip and palate, Conjoined twin syndrome, and other abnormalities? Do you see your god when DNA is deliberately or accidentally flawed? Are you saying your god wanted some children to be born with the defects? If so, you have one sick evil bastard for an imaginary friend.
@cosmos11 : I assume you know that no argument at all, I mean, none in the universe, could shift this untermensch's so-called mind one iota from his so-called convictions, and that you're answering him just because you just finished your washing-up and have nothing better to do.
@dilettantescorner I don't expect to change the minds of the convicted but feel compelled to challenge religious dogmatic statements on my channel. I prefer to be diplomatic rather than belittle or be blatantly offensive to those who's beliefs were, more than likely formed due to childhood indoctrination by parents with like beliefs. Maybe a logical jolt will challenge him to open the eye of reason.
@cosmos11 I think you have gotten the wrong idea. The main theme of the bible is the afterlife which shall never end. Sickness and all manner of associated things is temporal in comparison with eternal existence of the spirit that leaves the body at death. The curse brought all this is. Is that not what the Bible teaches in Genesis? This physical life is meaningless. It does not matter if you have lived the ultimate life here if you die lost. You along with a multitude will one day know.
@RN1204 The bible is a collection of stories woven together by different groups of primitive, clannish and superstitious people which have been passed down, translated, re translated and edited over thousands of years, it's woefully fallible goes against all humane logic.
"It's an incredible con job when you think about it, to believe something now in exchange for something after death. Even corporations with their reward systems don't try to make it posthumous." ~ Gloria Steinem
@RN1204 How sad a view on life that is... "This physical life is meaningless".
Your faith really does something good for you, I see it clearly...:(
Wouldn't you think God is kinda sad he makes this great adventure for you, and all you care about is your sweet dessert? Religion is such a meaningless thing, distorting human values...
@HKragh I'm not usually into religious debates, but I really admired: "Wouldn't you think God is kinda sad he makes this great adventure for you, and all you care about is your sweet dessert? " xD
but there's just 1 thing I'd disagree with - religion (whether a lie or a plausibility) has its uses, such as giving psychological strength to the weakened, helping moral development, and even creating wars between your enemies. Religion, like many other things in life, can be a useful tool. :)
@petion2010 a blind faith does wonders, but I agree. There's something called infatuation or passionate love, for one. It's quite temporary. Religion can last longer (even indefinitely) depending on the effectiveness of the indoctrination process. It might not be the sharpest tool in the box, but it's a classic. The Muslim suicide bombers have led a childhood and lifelong duration of influence, but it's ultimately effective. Just keeping an open mind though; please do share some examples. :)
@RespectMyHate Birth defects happen regardless of being near chemicals manipulated by man or in isolated tribal habitats. Of course malnutrition may affect life, after all, most life survives by eating other life forms. How nice! If you have imagined an omniscient, omnipotent father figure, others may say he is a piss poor provider to the children supposedly made in his image, and a poor chemist, or nonexistent!
You are welcome to thank anyone you wish for your genes, I'll thank my parents.
@cosmos11 Ok if you don't believe in God thats ok with me, But when Jesus does come back your going to be without excuse for not believing in him. There is no reason for anybody to not believe in God. The evidence is overly abundant.
I don't think people realize that God is Good and he gives us free will, if you want to be evil he will let you be evil, if people want to kill little children God will allow it, but remember this God will judge the wicked.
@RespectMyHate What empirical evidence supports your belief in god and that yours is the one true god rather than any of the other 10,000 gods man has imagined? "God is good?" You obviously haven't read the Old Testament.
@RespectMyHate "The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." Richard Dawkins
You have not given any empirical (testable) evidence for your god. Thanks for making my point. You fail again.
@derangius 800 world wide? thats a lie there are thousands. Including all scientist, doctors chemist etc, I personally know about 70 scientist who believe in a personal God, one that they can pray too.
@RespectMyHate Ah yes this is within the United States and not worldwide but again there will be people with bad ideas everywhere. Although an academic profession is likely to make one a non believer there are still academics that hold these delusions but keep them separate from there professions. Imagine a doctor that believed in "healing power" "Hey doc I need a prosthetic limb." Christain doctor: "Don't worry my child. God will grow it back for you" Imagine this being the case.
@RespectMyHate Oh and you personally and very conveniently know just right around 70 scientists, is it? What does it matter? Believe that lie too. haha
@BeyCuber Which religion and which god of the thousands mankind has created would you be reffering to? And why would you think I haven't "looked into" religion? And what empirical evidence can you provide that any god exists?
Susan B Anthony said, "I distrust those people who know so well what their god wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires."
@cosmos11 So sorry, i didn't see the full conversation behind your comment, nor did i see the context in which it was said. Just ignore my little post there ^^.
@cosmos11 God gave us the same deal it gave every other species on the planet. "Now that you're hear, figure out how to live here or die." Its a raw deal sure but it's the only one we're going to get. I'm not going to waste my time complaining about it, I'm going to figure out how to live here because I've only got one other choice.
@Bromopar You didn't answer: "Which religion and which god of the thousands mankind has created would you be reffering to?"
I won't try to convince you, because I know it's pointless. All I'm saying is this: I'm not a moron and I once believed that there was a god. Once you start only considering the possibility that this might be wrong, you will probably end up where I am now (I have become an atheist). You will also see that what you consider to be so despicable is actually an improvement.
@Parau1990 You're assuming I believe in the God of organized religion. My definition of God is my own and while you don't seem to be all that interested in what it is I won't waste your time. Instead of insulting me straight out of the gate how about we open a dialogue? You may find that we share more beliefs than you think.
@cosmos11 Argumentum ad consequentiam sir? If God didn't place these "abnormalities" as you see them on this earth than we wouldn't of investigated them and looked for cures and improved our society. Have you ever considered that homosexuality, might be a reason for population control? You look for purpose in everything but it seems to me your only reason for this favors you. God shouldn't be argued with. Debating is wasted energy
@DistortedV12 What a ludicrous statement! If God had never "created" these abnormalities (with NO regard as to the pain and suffering of those afflicted) then the cures would NOT HAVE BEEN NECESSARY. The fact that we developed these cures (without any help from God, mind you) bringing us back up to even does not makes us any better off than we would have been if these diseases have never existed. You can't possibly be THAT stupid.
@DistortedV12 By your logic, if I beat and robbed you, I would actually be doing you a favour, by giving you a reason to become stronger and make more money. Doing harm to someone may motiavte them to find a way to counteract that harm, and that solution may have applications that mean the victim's whole society is better off, but the credit goes to the victim who discovered the solution, not the the victimizer for providing the motivation.
@wendighoul No simpleton, beating & robbing me would be a consequence that you would make, by a choice that you would take, however a birth defect is not merely a choice, it is not a decision. The culprit in this case is intangible, that's what makes it so radical. I'm just saying it may not be a victimization as you see it; you may be familiar with the term "glass half empty." "You look for purpose in everything but it seems to me your only reason for this is to favor you."
@DistortedV12 You may want to brush-up on fallacies. Argumentum ad consequentiam is an appeal to belief. Belief being the absence of knowledge which transforms your argument into a Red Herring. Where is the empirical evidence that your god exists? don't have any? Then may I present Hitchens Razor, "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence." I don't argue with imaginary beings, only the fools who are certain they exist without testable evidence.
@cosmos11 The evidence is before you. Just as you aren't one to argue with "imaginary" or as I'd like to call it "inconceivable" beings, I'm not interested with whether you await everlasting suffering in a ghastly hell. God only gives you one chance, and one life, you have to be willing to accept something beyond yourself or your community.
@DistortedV12 Once supported by testable evidence the inconceivable can be readily accepted by the scientific community. Of course I asked for empirical (testable) evidence, which you don't have. Man has created thousands of gods and multiples of religions proclaiming those who don't believe as they will go to hell. If a hell exists, odds are, your chance of going there are almost the same as mine. Threats of hell have no effect on us who see your religion as simply, superstition!
It seems to me you're not an atheist are you? Why would a being who diefys all that is and all that will ever be, a God that sees into eternity have to "prove" itself to ONE generation of people. Electrons didn't need science to explain there existence, nor does God. Author Stephen Covey once said: "We are spiritual beings on a human path, not human beings on a spiritual path."
If a hell does exist,I won't have to worry about going to it.
@DistortedV12 We are both atheist, I just believe in one less god than you. Sorry to burst your bubble but gods have not proved themselves to any generation of people and there is no evidence that we are spiritual beings. Your perspective is always limited by how much you know. When you accept belief by faith rather than knowledge, your perspective will always be distorted. You obviously dismiss the hell of other religions as superstitions. I dismiss yours with the same logic.
@cosmos11 According to your logic, we are only what we know. Knowledge is based on evidence. Science supplies us with this knowledge, and is the testament of evidence Yet science hasn't dismissed religion, science itself is looked up to by many people. I agree with the few points. I agree but only if we were some type 2 civilization. If only if we could reasonably summarize all that life is. If only that inconceivable principle wasn't there. The mind is a formidable jailer sir.
@DistortedV12 Without logic weak minded fools are subject to believe any and all fairy tales. Can you disprove any of the other gods and their religions? Science deals with reality and is not in the business of disproving the imaginary. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence," ~ Carl Sagan. The stories of the bible are so far fetched that only ignorant, primitive desert tribesmen, uneducated children, and the thoroughly brainwashed could take them seriously.
@cosmos11 Those are some haughty claims. Red herring, vocal anger and scattered frustration. I will no longer share with you my opinions because you have become too vehement to discourse with. I'm convinced that we cannot come to common ground. If you are the product of all you say, than I worry about the future of our science.
@DistortedV12 Haughty claims? To accept any religion one has to believe in the epitome of haughty claims. There is no common ground between superstition and reality. Want me to move toward your position? All you need is testable evidence, everything else is just posturing. Religion is fact-less, baseless, and laughable. And those who don't want their beliefs laughed at shouldn't have funny beliefs. Reality is indifferent to what anyone believes and science will be just fine.
@cosmos11 Haughty: Arrogantly superior and disdainful: "a look of haughty disdain".
Christians do not force their beliefs on others. You clearly need to explore the bible more. Atheists on the contrary are smug in their assurance that their is no God. When in fact --
@DistortedV12 Exploring the Bible is irrelevant. I listen to what people who believe in it say, do and believe. And Christians have historically forced their beliefs on others at every turn, up to and including the present day. I, an atheist, don't attempt to kill people, persecute people or judge people based on what they think, as religions the world over continue to do. I simply look at the evidence of the world (and people's actions) and judge what reality is.
@DistortedV12 Really? Maybe you've not heard of the inquisition, the dark ages, and the very act of threatening children with hellfire and damnation for eternity if they don't except belief without evidence, a shameful child abusive force. It appears you've not invested time, thought, and work investigating the evidence science provides for a natural worldview. And like most Christians, you either don't know the abusive history of your religion or you deny its blood-lusting past.
@cosmos11 Are you mad? The Christian faith holds no position in the harming of others, christians can't even despise other christians who harm others. That would go against the principles of Christianity. Contemporary Christians know that. I see you love to use the fallacy of "nunc pro tunc" or presentism in it's finest form. Science has no place in proving religion. In due time through successful scientific breakthroughs hopefully the evidence will be "revealed" for you. Godspeed
@DistortedV12 Denying the atrocities of your religion doesn't change its violent past. The murder, rape, slavery, the dashing of children's skulls against rocks is condoned, sanctioned, and ordered by your holy book. Religion has taught you to be satisfied with not understanding the world. You deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, and outraged when someone denies the existence of yours. It's sad sheepish commentary on belief without empirical evidence.
@cosmos11 You have as of yet to respond to any of my arguments with regard to my own perspective. All of the contentions that you have stated are most likely from Clinton's (God) delusion. I can not help being born into my faith (which remains anonymous) and I take no part in defaming other religions nor should they. Nor should you. If you won't believe without empirical evidence than good luck finding that "evidence" before you die atheists in the past haven't.
@DistortedV12 We have different perspectives. Being born to religious parents gives no validity to a world view. "It is a remarkable coincidence that almost everyone has the same religion as their parents and it always just so happens they’re the right religion. If we'd been brought up in ancient Greece we would all be worshiping Zeus and Apollo. If we'd been born Vikings we'd be worshiping Wotan and Thor. How does this come about? Through childhood indoctrination." ~ RD
@cosmos11 (1/2) And To reitterate what I said earlier. Debating about religion is a waste of time. You can call a God imaginary as much as I can call the air particles between my hands privy to my own concious. Science's purpose is to logically explain and rationally examine all things. I find it foolish that certain persons can just dismiss religion altogether. It is quitting in the most daft regard. As if it is some concept that has been refuted or "busted."
@DistortedV12 Then I'll ask why are you posting your baseless comments on religion to my channel? It is foolish to believe something for which there is no evidence or to believe something only because your parents do. What I have done is to repeatedly ask for evidence and point out that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. "Science literacy is a vaccine against the Charlatans of the world that would exploit your ignorance." ~ Neil deGrasse Tyson
@cosmos11 (2/2) Atheism is built on superiority and superficiality.
Contemporary religion: you either accept it or you don't. I'm not here to evangelize you; however I think that the only reason you lash out these perverse contentions is to come to a better understanding of your own disbelief.
@DistortedV12 Atheism is nothing more than a lack of belief in the supernatural. Religion is a blind fish swimming in an ocean of hypocrisy. "I believe in evidence. I believe in observation, measurement, and reasoning, confirmed by independent observers. I'll believe anything, no matter how wild and ridiculous, if there is evidence for it. The wilder and more ridiculous something is, however, the firmer and more solid the evidence will have to be." ~ Isaac Asimov
@cosmos11 I see you admire Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov. These renowned men have unfortunately met their death, and in essence you will die too with evidence or not! If that's not reason to merely consider God than I don't know what is. There are hypocrisies in Atheism as well because evidently you are asking ME questions. Science may examine but it will most likely never understand it's purpose. Can you politely leave me alone; I don't normally spend my day arguing about the incomprehensible.
@DistortedV12 I've been tolerant with you because you are very young and immature. Your position may change on many things during your life if viewed with an open mind, but to surrender to ignorance and call it god can only be defined as embracing ignorance. Your proselytizing is an attempt to spread your ignorance and I won't let you waste more of my time and channel space with your nonsense. I will suggest you grow respect for others, and for your benefit, a questioning mind.
@DistortedV12 You think that the fact that we will all die means we should consider God? Why? Do you fear death? If so, I would again ask, why? I don't need to imagine that I will go to a magical place that can somehow accommodate everyone that has ever died and ever will die. I'm no more afraid of the day that I die than I am of the year 1800, after all, I didn't exist then either. One shouldn't fear death, or invent fantasies of what happens after. Use the time you have to its fullest.
@cosmos11 You don't know either fool. So why are you arguing? Atheists have the burden of proof. The claim that you do not believe in god or that god does not exist is secondary and relies on the claim that god does exist. No one can claim that god does not exist or that they do not believe in god unless the claim that god does exist is primary, therefore they are making an additional claim and the burden of proof shifts back to them. End of discussion.
@DistortedV12 You are wrong, the burden of proof is always on the person making an assertion or proposition. Shifting the burden of proof, a special case of argumentum ad ignorantium, is the fallacy of putting the burden of proof on the person who denies or questions the assertion being made. It's you with an arrogant certainty that your god exists and I who have repeatedly asked for verifiable evidence before changing my position. I still waiting, but it's obvious you have none.
@cosmos11 Not only a shame, but scary. We have all these people that are essentially children when it comes to ethics running around, without supervision.
@RespectMyHate Why does god hate amputees? Not a single amputee has ever grown back an arm or a leg, no matter how much they prayed and begged. Why does he hate their guts? Is that your idea of "right"?
I'm Tyson's age and watched every moment when this was unfolding in the 60s.
I've been scratching my head for years trying to figure out why we went from boldly going where no one has gone before to being a country of so many technophobes and luddites.
But it's not all bleak. We've got the Hubble, and all these Nasa missions and extrasolar planets and the internet giving us all quick access to deep information.
Still, that was an awesome achievement, and I'll never forget watching it.
I WOULD LIKE UR COMMENT ON THIS. i believe the reason for our lack of progress in the feild's engineering is the concentration of public propaganda on metapoyt want to become lawyers. the fundamental characteristic boys have at a young age, building things, is being destroyed for more feminine things like 'writing how u feel about things'. I think this is basically to blame for the loss of interest in humans greatest endeavor
My parents got a moon landing and the generations after only got war strife pain control lies and a clear purposeful authoritarian fist holding every one down.
WE HAVE TO GO TO SPACE BECAUSE WE ARE ESSENTIALLY FROM SPACE!
shame on us humans who wilfully allow ourselves to be enslaved under the tyranny of a made to fail monetary system. we've now the capacity to make many of Mr. Sagan's visions a reality, yet we submit to the utter nonsense of persuing a non-existant delusion of "individuality". for not 1 person can live completely alone & be trully healthy. we all require some form of social interaction wether we have the most cantankerous of dispositions. wisely used the planets resources provide plenty 4all.
Well, I do not give up yet, I think we will get back to the Moon and fly to mars in this century, it will happen, it will take time and effort but it will happen. We need more advocates of space exploration, ever since Carl Sagan died, we lost the interest in this, we need more people to go out and say "We need to go back to the moon and land on mars!" Sagan said "Our survival heavily depends on how well we understand the Cosmos."
I think it's sad that people have lived their whole lives since the moon landing. No one has ever been on the moon in my lifetime or in the lifetimes of my brothers... how sad.
The heart of humanity is in new experiences, curiosity, exploration. You'll hear people saddened by the fact that there are no empty spaces on the maps anymore, well, there's a lot of empty space outside of Earth, and I think we need to explore it, especially considering the fact that we can't stay here forever.
@FeelOfFriction There is no fixing the problems on Earth, because the problem of Earth is man, and that problem will follow us wherever we go until we mature as a species.
@FeelOfFriction Almost all of the shit we have fixed here on earth has come either directly from exploring space i.e. studying the formation of complex chemistry in the center of stars. Or as a by product of it such as the MRI machine which was developed by an astrophysicist for a different purpose. In order to understand the complex, we have to study the basics first and the basic components and processes in the universe are found in space.
You'll NEVER fix all the problems even in a single life. Or home. Or country. And certainly not planet.
You don't stop doing positive things while there are things to fix any more than you stop your forward momentum on your bike while you still have to breath.
@FeelOfFriction How about the fact that so many problems on earth have been fixed by going to space. Anyone who wears glasses is indebted to NASA for the technology of the plastic. And that's just one of a zillion examples you stupid fuck.
Maybe China will declare its intent to go to Mars and America will be spurred into a second space race.
Of course, space travel should be the result of all humanity trying to "jump as high as it can" rather than disparate factions trying to leap just over each other for boasting rights.
He's quite right about the US hitching rides off of other countries. Between the time the Shuttle is retired (in 2010 or 2011 at the latest), and the time the next generation Shuttle is ready for launch (2020 earliest), we'll have to bum rides off of the Russians to get to and from the ISS or anywhere else. How's that for a gigantic screw-up in planning?
No oil was found on the moon. That's why. If oil had been found, it would have become the Dubai of the solar system by now. So, no, moon will never be populated.
@HKragh Valuable to whom? Not to any corporation or any government. If there were, there'd be daily trips to a very populated moon by now, 42 years after the first landing.
@kossmikham Helum 3 i s a lot more abundant on the moon, than on earth (where it's so rare, that we produce it, rather than mine it), which is a great source of energy. There has been many proponents of mining this stuff from the surface of the moon. I asure you I'm not talking soft values, when I speak about using the moon for valuable purposes... Look it up :) There is, however, still mixed feelings about this issue, so I'm not speaking about absolute truths, only what some (many) propose...
Thanks DeSwiss, Some of us are listening and I feel sure Neal deGrass Tyson will have many more important messages in the near future. We meed more mentors like Neal to lead us in the direction of true intelligence.
I. want. that. tie.

But it's really a shame that all the great advancements in human pioneering at that time was just driven by war and rocket tests. By the time we go to Mars in person we should have changed.

@ZachRose88 solar flares
TheSleazye666 2 months ago
@candymagic68 Sad, too. Because anyone can shoot a well aimed laser at the moon, hit the mirror set up by Apollo, and get some of the light reflected back. That wouldn't be possible if they weren't there.
One of the great problems of explaining discovery is we can read it in books, we can show pictures and video, we can talk at length about the science, but until we actually see it for ourselves, in person, it's not fully real to us.
kaimialana 4 months ago
@kaimialana Saturn, for example. I saw pictures for years, but it wasn't until I set up my first telescope and pointed at that bright yellow light, that the ringed planet drifted into view and became real for me. It was, as Feynman put it, "all really there".
kaimialana 4 months ago 3
@kaimialana Oh hell yes! I damn near flipped out with excitement knowing I could actually SEE the gaps between the planet and it's rings. I lost it so hard right then and there.

RN1204 1 year ago
@RN1204 The bible is a collection of stories woven together by different groups of primitive, clannish and superstitious people which have been passed down, translated, re translated and edited over thousands of years, it's woefully fallible goes against all humane logic.

WhiteMorphageus 7 months ago
@WhiteMorphageus It could, but at what price. And nothing that religion accomplished that can't be accomplished by other means.
petion2010 7 months ago
@petion2010 a blind faith does wonders, but I agree. There's something called infatuation or passionate love, for one. It's quite temporary. Religion can last longer (even indefinitely) depending on the effectiveness of the indoctrination process. It might not be the sharpest tool in the box, but it's a classic. The Muslim suicide bombers have led a childhood and lifelong duration of influence, but it's ultimately effective. Just keeping an open mind though; please do share some examples. :)

Bromopar 9 months ago
@Bromopar You didn't answer: "Which religion and which god of the thousands mankind has created would you be reffering to?"
I won't try to convince you, because I know it's pointless. All I'm saying is this: I'm not a moron and I once believed that there was a god. Once you start only considering the possibility that this might be wrong, you will probably end up where I am now (I have become an atheist). You will also see that what you consider to be so despicable is actually an improvement.
Parau1990 9 months ago
@Parau1990 You're assuming I believe in the God of organized religion. My definition of God is my own and while you don't seem to be all that interested in what it is I won't waste your time. Instead of insulting me straight out of the gate how about we open a dialogue? You may find that we share more beliefs than you think.
Bromopar 9 months ago
@cosmos11 Argumentum ad consequentiam sir? If God didn't place these "abnormalities" as you see them on this earth than we wouldn't of investigated them and looked for cures and improved our society. Have you ever considered that homosexuality, might be a reason for population control? You look for purpose in everything but it seems to me your only reason for this favors you. God shouldn't be argued with. Debating is wasted energy
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 What a ludicrous statement! If God had never "created" these abnormalities (with NO regard as to the pain and suffering of those afflicted) then the cures would NOT HAVE BEEN NECESSARY. The fact that we developed these cures (without any help from God, mind you) bringing us back up to even does not makes us any better off than we would have been if these diseases have never existed. You can't possibly be THAT stupid.
wendighoul 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 By your logic, if I beat and robbed you, I would actually be doing you a favour, by giving you a reason to become stronger and make more money. Doing harm to someone may motiavte them to find a way to counteract that harm, and that solution may have applications that mean the victim's whole society is better off, but the credit goes to the victim who discovered the solution, not the the victimizer for providing the motivation.
wendighoul 1 month ago
@wendighoul No simpleton, beating & robbing me would be a consequence that you would make, by a choice that you would take, however a birth defect is not merely a choice, it is not a decision. The culprit in this case is intangible, that's what makes it so radical. I'm just saying it may not be a victimization as you see it; you may be familiar with the term "glass half empty." "You look for purpose in everything but it seems to me your only reason for this is to favor you."
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 You may want to brush-up on fallacies. Argumentum ad consequentiam is an appeal to belief. Belief being the absence of knowledge which transforms your argument into a Red Herring. Where is the empirical evidence that your god exists? don't have any? Then may I present Hitchens Razor, "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence." I don't argue with imaginary beings, only the fools who are certain they exist without testable evidence.
cosmos11 1 month ago 4
@cosmos11 The evidence is before you. Just as you aren't one to argue with "imaginary" or as I'd like to call it "inconceivable" beings, I'm not interested with whether you await everlasting suffering in a ghastly hell. God only gives you one chance, and one life, you have to be willing to accept something beyond yourself or your community.
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 Once supported by testable evidence the inconceivable can be readily accepted by the scientific community. Of course I asked for empirical (testable) evidence, which you don't have. Man has created thousands of gods and multiples of religions proclaiming those who don't believe as they will go to hell. If a hell exists, odds are, your chance of going there are almost the same as mine. Threats of hell have no effect on us who see your religion as simply, superstition!
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 "Once supported by testable evidence"
It seems to me you're not an atheist are you? Why would a being who diefys all that is and all that will ever be, a God that sees into eternity have to "prove" itself to ONE generation of people. Electrons didn't need science to explain there existence, nor does God. Author Stephen Covey once said: "We are spiritual beings on a human path, not human beings on a spiritual path."
If a hell does exist,I won't have to worry about going to it.
DistortedV12 1 month ago

DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 We are both atheist, I just believe in one less god than you. Sorry to burst your bubble but gods have not proved themselves to any generation of people and there is no evidence that we are spiritual beings. Your perspective is always limited by how much you know. When you accept belief by faith rather than knowledge, your perspective will always be distorted. You obviously dismiss the hell of other religions as superstitions. I dismiss yours with the same logic.
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 According to your logic, we are only what we know. Knowledge is based on evidence. Science supplies us with this knowledge, and is the testament of evidence Yet science hasn't dismissed religion, science itself is looked up to by many people. I agree with the few points. I agree but only if we were some type 2 civilization. If only if we could reasonably summarize all that life is. If only that inconceivable principle wasn't there. The mind is a formidable jailer sir.
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 Without logic weak minded fools are subject to believe any and all fairy tales. Can you disprove any of the other gods and their religions? Science deals with reality and is not in the business of disproving the imaginary. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence," ~ Carl Sagan. The stories of the bible are so far fetched that only ignorant, primitive desert tribesmen, uneducated children, and the thoroughly brainwashed could take them seriously.
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 Those are some haughty claims. Red herring, vocal anger and scattered frustration. I will no longer share with you my opinions because you have become too vehement to discourse with. I'm convinced that we cannot come to common ground. If you are the product of all you say, than I worry about the future of our science.
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 Haughty claims? To accept any religion one has to believe in the epitome of haughty claims. There is no common ground between superstition and reality. Want me to move toward your position? All you need is testable evidence, everything else is just posturing. Religion is fact-less, baseless, and laughable. And those who don't want their beliefs laughed at shouldn't have funny beliefs. Reality is indifferent to what anyone believes and science will be just fine.
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 Haughty: Arrogantly superior and disdainful: "a look of haughty disdain".
Christians do not force their beliefs on others. You clearly need to explore the bible more. Atheists on the contrary are smug in their assurance that their is no God. When in fact --
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 Exploring the Bible is irrelevant. I listen to what people who believe in it say, do and believe. And Christians have historically forced their beliefs on others at every turn, up to and including the present day. I, an atheist, don't attempt to kill people, persecute people or judge people based on what they think, as religions the world over continue to do. I simply look at the evidence of the world (and people's actions) and judge what reality is.
houdin654jeff 1 month ago 2
@DistortedV12 Really? Maybe you've not heard of the inquisition, the dark ages, and the very act of threatening children with hellfire and damnation for eternity if they don't except belief without evidence, a shameful child abusive force. It appears you've not invested time, thought, and work investigating the evidence science provides for a natural worldview. And like most Christians, you either don't know the abusive history of your religion or you deny its blood-lusting past.
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 Are you mad? The Christian faith holds no position in the harming of others, christians can't even despise other christians who harm others. That would go against the principles of Christianity. Contemporary Christians know that. I see you love to use the fallacy of "nunc pro tunc" or presentism in it's finest form. Science has no place in proving religion. In due time through successful scientific breakthroughs hopefully the evidence will be "revealed" for you. Godspeed
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 Denying the atrocities of your religion doesn't change its violent past. The murder, rape, slavery, the dashing of children's skulls against rocks is condoned, sanctioned, and ordered by your holy book. Religion has taught you to be satisfied with not understanding the world. You deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, and outraged when someone denies the existence of yours. It's sad sheepish commentary on belief without empirical evidence.
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 You have as of yet to respond to any of my arguments with regard to my own perspective. All of the contentions that you have stated are most likely from Clinton's (God) delusion. I can not help being born into my faith (which remains anonymous) and I take no part in defaming other religions nor should they. Nor should you. If you won't believe without empirical evidence than good luck finding that "evidence" before you die atheists in the past haven't.
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 We have different perspectives. Being born to religious parents gives no validity to a world view. "It is a remarkable coincidence that almost everyone has the same religion as their parents and it always just so happens they’re the right religion. If we'd been brought up in ancient Greece we would all be worshiping Zeus and Apollo. If we'd been born Vikings we'd be worshiping Wotan and Thor. How does this come about? Through childhood indoctrination." ~ RD
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 (1/2) And To reitterate what I said earlier. Debating about religion is a waste of time. You can call a God imaginary as much as I can call the air particles between my hands privy to my own concious. Science's purpose is to logically explain and rationally examine all things. I find it foolish that certain persons can just dismiss religion altogether. It is quitting in the most daft regard. As if it is some concept that has been refuted or "busted."
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 Then I'll ask why are you posting your baseless comments on religion to my channel? It is foolish to believe something for which there is no evidence or to believe something only because your parents do. What I have done is to repeatedly ask for evidence and point out that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. "Science literacy is a vaccine against the Charlatans of the world that would exploit your ignorance." ~ Neil deGrasse Tyson
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 (2/2) Atheism is built on superiority and superficiality.
Contemporary religion: you either accept it or you don't. I'm not here to evangelize you; however I think that the only reason you lash out these perverse contentions is to come to a better understanding of your own disbelief.
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 Atheism is nothing more than a lack of belief in the supernatural. Religion is a blind fish swimming in an ocean of hypocrisy. "I believe in evidence. I believe in observation, measurement, and reasoning, confirmed by independent observers. I'll believe anything, no matter how wild and ridiculous, if there is evidence for it. The wilder and more ridiculous something is, however, the firmer and more solid the evidence will have to be." ~ Isaac Asimov
cosmos11 1 month ago
@cosmos11 I see you admire Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov. These renowned men have unfortunately met their death, and in essence you will die too with evidence or not! If that's not reason to merely consider God than I don't know what is. There are hypocrisies in Atheism as well because evidently you are asking ME questions. Science may examine but it will most likely never understand it's purpose. Can you politely leave me alone; I don't normally spend my day arguing about the incomprehensible.
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 I've been tolerant with you because you are very young and immature. Your position may change on many things during your life if viewed with an open mind, but to surrender to ignorance and call it god can only be defined as embracing ignorance. Your proselytizing is an attempt to spread your ignorance and I won't let you waste more of my time and channel space with your nonsense. I will suggest you grow respect for others, and for your benefit, a questioning mind.
cosmos11 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 You think that the fact that we will all die means we should consider God? Why? Do you fear death? If so, I would again ask, why? I don't need to imagine that I will go to a magical place that can somehow accommodate everyone that has ever died and ever will die. I'm no more afraid of the day that I die than I am of the year 1800, after all, I didn't exist then either. One shouldn't fear death, or invent fantasies of what happens after. Use the time you have to its fullest.
ScienceofWinning 2 weeks ago 3
@cosmos11 You don't know either fool. So why are you arguing? Atheists have the burden of proof. The claim that you do not believe in god or that god does not exist is secondary and relies on the claim that god does exist. No one can claim that god does not exist or that they do not believe in god unless the claim that god does exist is primary, therefore they are making an additional claim and the burden of proof shifts back to them. End of discussion.
DistortedV12 1 month ago
@DistortedV12 You are wrong, the burden of proof is always on the person making an assertion or proposition. Shifting the burden of proof, a special case of argumentum ad ignorantium, is the fallacy of putting the burden of proof on the person who denies or questions the assertion being made. It's you with an arrogant certainty that your god exists and I who have repeatedly asked for verifiable evidence before changing my position. I still waiting, but it's obvious you have none.

A powerful commentary that has left me sober .

Why can't we just wake up as a species to the possibilities of universal exploration?

I think it's sad that people have lived their whole lives since the moon landing. No one has ever been on the moon in my lifetime or in the lifetimes of my brothers... how sad.

The heart of humanity is in new experiences, curiosity, exploration. You'll hear people saddened by the fact that there are no empty spaces on the maps anymore, well, there's a lot of empty space outside of Earth, and I think we need to explore it, especially considering the fact that we can't stay here forever.

How about we fix our shit here on Earth before we go to space.
FeelOfFriction 2 years ago
How about we do both? If we waited until we fix all our problems on earth we would never go into space.

@cosmos11
exactly, he just described that we were in our most turbulent times since the civil war when we went to space.
some1sosik 2 years ago
@cosmos11 infact I believe that the only way that we can fix the problems is to go to space.
FruitsP 1 year ago
@FeelOfFriction There is no fixing the problems on Earth, because the problem of Earth is man, and that problem will follow us wherever we go until we mature as a species.

@FeelOfFriction Almost all of the shit we have fixed here on earth has come either directly from exploring space i.e. studying the formation of complex chemistry in the center of stars. Or as a by product of it such as the MRI machine which was developed by an astrophysicist for a different purpose. In order to understand the complex, we have to study the basics first and the basic components and processes in the universe are found in space.

@FeelOfFriction
You don't get it.

And that's just one of a zillion examples you stupid fuck.

yeap, Saturn V is better then the Shuttle and the Shuttle's replacement will be similar to the Saturn V.

How's that for a gigantic screw-up in planning?

why aren't we going to walk on the moon again?
we're probably going to populate the moon
equallyeasilyfuqyou 2 years ago
No oil was found on the moon. That's why. If oil had been found, it would have become the Dubai of the solar system by now. So, no, moon will never be populated.
kossmikham 2 years ago 2
@kossmikham Well, something more valuable than oil is present there, so maybe...
HKragh 1 year ago
@HKragh Valuable to whom? Not to any corporation or any government. If there were, there'd be daily trips to a very populated moon by now, 42 years after the first landing.
kossmikham 1 year ago
@kossmikham Helum 3 i s a lot more abundant on the moon, than on earth (where it's so rare, that we produce it, rather than mine it), which is a great source of energy. There has been many proponents of mining this stuff from the surface of the moon. I asure you I'm not talking soft values, when I speak about using the moon for valuable purposes... Look it up :) There is, however, still mixed feelings about this issue, so I'm not speaking about absolute truths, only what some (many) propose...

Fantastic! Great video and it's an important message.
It's too bad nobody's listening anymore.

Thanks DeSwiss, Some of us are listening and I feel sure Neal deGrass Tyson will have many more important messages in the near future. We meed more mentors like Neal to lead us in the direction of true intelligence.
Thanks for your comment.
