It was made with OpenGL start to finish, like all their engines so it's multi-platform and not just Windows. They just shove DX rendering on for the Windows versions, but it doesn't really give it much extra that OpenGL couldn't achieve.

For the guy below. No console right now is Directx 10 compatible, not even the 360. Why? Because it wasn't released at the time and no console has a GPU that is DX10 ready. I'm guarantee the Xbox 3 will have it, but seeing as Sony is a competitor highly unlikely for the PS4!

No one ever said anything about GTA IV and its graphical advantage when using DirectX 10.

NFS Prostreet is a fully DirectX 9 game.

Bioshock and Unreal Tournament 3 can be played with DirectX 9, even if they show any better results in DirectX 10 (which I doubt).

Damn nice video 5/5. I build my own future gaming pc yesterday ;) It has:

- 630 watt power supply

- amd athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2ghz

- geforce 8800 gts 320mb superclocked edition

- 2 gb of ram

- 19" widescreen lcd monitor

- mATX AsRock 939NF6G-VSTA motherboard

- 160gb HDD

But, i have one problem, my screen stays black. Everything runs and gets power but the monitor stays black. :s any ideas ?

I think it would be a problem with your Display. Check the power connections and then the Graphics Card!

I have 8800 gts 320 mb :P I'll get 2 more gigs of ram 4 my birthday, and then I'll have 3. My processor is amd 4600+, It was awesome when they released it but half a year later there are 5600+! The only thing that sucks with my pc is the mother-board which is mATX and only has 1* PCIx16 :( I tthought it would have hdmi and didn't know alot about motherboards back then but I'm sure I'll buy a new motherboard later...

Is an 8600GT a good way to get into the DX10 world? but I understand that having loads of RAM and a good CPU is important. I'm running a C2D E6320 With 2 GB 667MHz RAM and ofcourse the 8600GT. I haven't really got Vista yet so I haven't tried it out of the DX10 games.

Well sorry, you cant have Dx10 on XP. Its just a too much radical departure from the DirectX Architecture to be compatible with XP!

no its a horrible card.  i hope your not thinking the weak 12.8GB/s bandwith is enough to play crysis even if its sli. you may be very lucky to get 1-2settings on med but pretty much low.

UT3 and GRAW2 support DX10, as well as DX9, so they do count under DX 10. as for GTA IV and NFS 2007, they still havent been ported to the PC and its not a bad guess that they will be DX 10 when they are finally are.

Yes. It is a decent card and will certainly perform good under DX10. Its just a matter of resolution. If you stick to 1024x768x32, there should be no problem.

On 20 Inches, you'll definitely see large pixels when the res is down to 1024x768x32, the best solution is to vary the resolution notch by notch to a level where you feel comfortable, i.e. satisfactory speed, plus image quality.

It also depends on your CPU and RAM, and also a bit on your Hard Drive Latency. But for current titles it should not be a problem. But if you want to be future proof, I would suggest a GeForce 8800 based GPU, be it 320 GTS or Ultra. Its up to your Pocket.
